  1. Pushing the pedal down with the drum off will allow the piston in the rear cylinder to push out further than it should. Either or both pistons could be out to far and jammed. Take the tops off the brake reservoir and try and push the rear cylinders in to push the fluid back up to the reservoir. You need to make sure the pistons are all the way back plus as I said in the other reply adjust the bottom adjusting screw in to minimum. (you rotate that gear like part to screw the thread in or out to adjust the shoe) Normally if you look at the backing plate you can see where the shoes used to sit to give you an idea. I would say the hand brake may be not working properly because it has popped out of where it should sit. You need to check that is all back in the correct place on both sides. Do you have a lip on the outer edge of the drum braking face? This sometimes makes it hard to get the drum on and then you have a big gap between the shoe and drum once on. I would be surprised that a booster that is too big would cause the brakes to lock. Are the fronts and the rears both locking or just the rears?
  2. Rear drum brakes locking up is typically brake fluid leaking out and getting on the brake shoes or poor adjustment. There is a adjustment screw on the opposing side to the cylinder. Adjust this to minimum and put the drum back on. You can then adjust it with a blade screw driver through the hole in the backing plate that should have a rubber bung in it. Adjust it out until you can feel it just touch the drum and then go back a touch,

  4. Cool, I will pursue this option and in the leather. Hope I can fit them as I get cross just fitting normal lamb’s wool seat covers. If they look as good as the photo I would be wrapped!
  5. Thanks Linton, that looks to be exactly what I am after Were they very hard to fit and how long did they take to get to you? Cheers Tim...
  6. Have had a quote for $2200-2500 for leather (front and back) Now that's a bit more than I thought Maybe the MX5 and 350Z seats would be a good option!
  7. Hi Liesl and welcome You should post some photos of the car and start a journal like others on the site as it is done up.
  8. My son's first car was a 280ZX as he liked the extra "bling" you get in them, it was very good on fuel and cheaper to buy. As luck would have it someone ran into the back of it and he then bought a 260z which he preferred to drive as it was more a classic. As a first car and likely to have a scratch and dent or two I would be worried how a classic would handle that
  9. Here's your car.....sounds like the right spec and in QLD http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/worongary/cars-vans-utes/1976-datsun-260z-coupe/1051250293
  10. Freight may not be too bad if they can be packed up, I can get good rates. Can you please send photos and how much you are after? tmamo@coachair.com
  11. Does anyone know a good reupholster, preferably in Brisbane?
  12. Thanks guys. The issue with the RX7 seats is that my head is jammed against the roof and I am not that tall! Would be most happy with a set of original seats preferably in leather, front and back but no longer have the original front seats. Also need a good mob to do the seats up which is a challenge. Fully agree that the S30 seats are best. Thinking about it now, would much prefer the originals Will start to hunt for a good set and someone to do them up! Once done I will PM Retro Z for the old seats if my son does not take them for his car
  13. 280ZX Fuel Injection http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DATSUN-280ZX-260Z-240Z-FUEL-INJECTION-TO-SUIT-L-SERIES-ENGINE-/251577696524?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a9333010c
  14. I agree with pulling it apart to learn and have a look at it. There are basically two functions to the starter motor: 1. Ignition (start) signal goes to solenoid on the side of the starter motor. This throws the starter gear out to engage the flywheel. This sometimes plays up with poor connections or a poor earth. 2. The power from the main battery cable is used to spin the starter motor. If the solenoid works and throws the gear out then it is just the starter motor itself that could be the issue. I have not pulled one apart for 20 years but I would guess it could be a stuck brush in the brush holder of something like that. Hope that helps.
  15. I have RX7 seats in my Zed but they sit too high and are not all that comfortable. Does anyone know of aftermarket seats that I could fit that would not cost an arm and a leg? I have seen the SAAS ones a Supercheap but not sure if they are any good and if you get the rails to suit a Zed
  16. At 2+2 in WA http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/mandurah/cars-vans-utes/datsun-260z-cheeeeeap-must-go-this-week/1050504633
  17. Always remember things fail for a reason, if the head gasket failed, ask why? You will need to ensure that the head is not warped at all. Did it overheat at all? Are you sure the temperature gauges is working properly? Can you tell where the water was tracking through the head gasket? You need to be sure that just a head gasket will fix the long term issue. May be you could get the head done up while its off, skim and new valve guides (if you have the money) I would be concerned if there are any blocked water journals, these need to be flushed out plus the radiator
  18. I would also get the last copy of the rego papers of the vehicle as this will make it easier when you have it re-registered. Would also get a copy of the registered owners licence or at least his/her licence number as another point of reference. Whenever I have bought a car interstate have called my local Dept of Transport to see if they have any special requirements (best to ask rather than troll through the web page)
  19. I had a similar problem with my old Datsun 1600 but it had an aftermarket air filter....at revs and load when it needed the most air it would suck the filter in...is there anything in the air box that could do that? A flap or something?
  20. I can look if this has not been sorted.......
  21. Thanks guys It runs well but I am sure the SU's on it now (with standard air filter) are well out of tune, smells of fuel and uses heaps. Does anyone know a good mob in Brisbane who can tune them? The idea of later technology than 280ZX is where I would like to go, any idea of the cost or who to ask?
  22. While I like the car being more original (twin SU's) I am thinking that it would be nicer to drive with fuel injection Is the 280ZX the only and best setup or is there something better? Has anyone done a step-by-step on the conversion or know any mob that can do the conversion?
  23. Here is another one http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/balcatta/cars-vans-utes/1971-datsun-240z-coupe/1039879685
  24. If you want to see a 260Z 2+2 be a major feature in a movie watch "Safety Not Guaranteed" Not too bad a movie either!
