I can't remember the exact process we used....but for mine.... It was painted in the black and then lightly sprayed over the top with grey.... this gets it pretty close to stock (methinks). If I find the time (and remember) will try and get some photos. Huw

Need help tracking down heater parts - where is the best place to go
Huw replied to dorifticon's topic in General Maintenance
if it helps at all.....as a temporary fix you can buy the universal switch sold at places like Bursons. When I looked 4 years ago, I could not find an original one anywhere. I still have heater problems, but the leak is gone. (the switch is a bugger to mount unless you are feeling inventive, i have left mine hanging which means the switch does not operate as well as it should (yes, lazy i know). Huw -
just noticed lurch beat me to it... If you want another photo, let me know. p.s. looks like the previous owner was a butcher! (like mine - except mine was tin snips to wheel arches)....and shag felt throughout.
-
Although....to be fair Lurch...I am not interested in the body work that they do. The most interesting work they seem to do is the mechanical....which at least according to Japanese Magazines (haven't met/spoken to any customers) is good.
-
I love that shop.... next time I am over there will really need to sneak in. I don't think any of their work would be cheap (obviously) but it always seems to be right on. Unfortunately, the blog does not say much in the way of figures/fun comments, mainly just like a diary of what going on. Should get a copy of the magazine.... Huw

meeting someone nice in a Mankini? usually the nice ones would be running..... interesting to see what happens with this one. would love to see the highway cops face if you get pulled over! Huw

OK all those hogging the 70-71Z bits.....(I have posted on this before) Does anyone have the following parts: 1) Center console (transmission tunnel) 'switch panel' including switches (where the choke and hand throttle levers go) mine does not have the switches or a blank to block them up and thus looks incomplete.....funnily enough, there are no aftermarket switches in that size. 2) 70-71Z cigarette lighter (don't smoke but again...blank hole and too lazy to make own bracket etc) 3) Spare wheel well bolt/tyre restraint (that stops it bouncing around when you hit anything...it does not appear to be a standard thread (although I may bodge up a solution to that one). Cars For Sale (3rd Party Sites) Ebay, Carsales etc..
Huw replied to gav240z's topic in Cars For Sale
Gee that Shannons one is nice....hope it goes to someone with half a brain (who gets rid of the steering wheel (as long as they put another one on) and the chromed air box...). -
I was thinking along the lines of the first suggestion. Although, as I have a 71 240 I don't quite understand the 2+2 suggestion (cheaper to source & more of them?) Rev's site looks great, as does the interior kit, it is one thing that I am considering but I was thinking that if I was going to spend that much it would be worth sending it off. Seats are the nicest bit of my interior :-) Top lining and all of that is fine, it is the rear panels, carpets, gearbox tunnel and 'step' between the front and the cargo area (name escapes me...that bit just needs a reglue.) Huw

Hi All Well...I am now getting sick of my poor attempt at restoring my zed interior....seats are fine but the plastic panels are cracked and I may have laid some of the Vinyl (on the gearbox tunnel) quite badly....Anyway, my thoughts are: 1) to send to pro and get interior re-done replacing plastic quarter panels (both the quarter window and larger quarter panels) with something else (aka not original). 2) Pull it up and try and do again using vinyl I have at the moment. BUT I need new carpets as mine have discoloured with use (black dye has gone purple....not the best supplier...will probably get cut pile rather than loop as I think it looks nicer. Anyway, thoughts? What do people think I should be looking at spending for this? Recommended business? I had wicked thought sof leather....like in the 240z.id.au (simon degroot's) zed but I don't think the budget will stretch that far. Huw

Wheel arches not much fun either (previous owner had cut....exposing to elements).....not so much getting out but getting new metal to fit....and look right. agree with battery tray comment. No experience with hatch but one of the more common areas. p.s. one thing that we did, all panels that came off (door skins, hatch, etc) got a galvanising after we had blasted....hoping to make the car slightly more resistant in the long run.
-
I reallly don;t want to hear that! Mine was done by a retired gearbox rebuilder who is meant to be good for zed boxes...it a 260 box (i think)....
-
Evening all... just a quick one....my gearbox was rebuilt 3-4 years ago when I restored the car...it has not been driven all that much (despite being a daily driver, i spend 3-4 months a year in Japan). Anyway, the gearbox whines quite loudly in fifth....basically since the rebuild (don't remember exactly)...I always presumed it was the overdrive gear but I thought I would ask now. Do others have a similar problem/noise? It is not unbearable, it would just be nicer if quiet. Huw

Well all done now.....around $250 out in the country (Leongatha) by a friend's garage.... son raises the v8 supercars and in the mini challenge and they seemed to know their cars. Much more liveable.....and seems to go better to (that may be self justification for blowing the money but...) Huw

had same problem with mine. Ended up essentially welding a 'front cut' on to the zed from the front towers on. good luck finding a donor.

Looking for someone to do the whole job....I don't have the space in the shed or a good enough welder to do the job myself.....shed full with Austin 7 and another 240... Anyway, have called round a couple of places, most of them are out... Spoke to Daalder exhausts in Box hill (bit of a trip but I am out there for other things later in the week). He suggested just putting a smaller muffler on (back pressure + Silence increased). I erring on side of ripping the whole lot off, as the initial system was 2.5" and crush bent....was thinking of getting best can (for the least I can....not a good mix!). Only about a $100 buck difference. Any additional shop suggestions? Any thoughts on the muffler suggestion?

Hi Sulio I know this is an old topic, but how did the bars go at HARKROME? I am looking at fixing mine up as the last couple of stages in getting my zed really right before heading to Japan. Sorry about digging up an ancient thread. Huw
-
Well to revive my old topic..... I am now looking to take my exhaust down a couple of sizes and looking for a workshop around Hampton/Sandringham/Moorabin way (quality more important than being near to home). I am looking at putting a 2" exhaust on to a 2.4L engine with headers, this would include both a muffler and resonator on the line. I would like it to be bent properly in a Mandrel press (I can get for $300 local press bent). I have been told by Daniel that I should be able to find somewhere for around the 3-400 mark....and that he can do it right for the zed for a fair bit more (as it will take him all day and need to get parts in). Does anyone have a workshop they know/trust? Huw

possibly the latter...... they are a blighter to come by.

Interestingly, late last year I ran into him at the car wash on South road. I was in the zed and we had a good chat, really nice bloke.....should have taken the opportunity to ask some questions but was in a slight hurry to get to uni.....

Hi All Quick question for those that know more about suspension than I do......(most people). Have just discovered that when we modified my front suspension by inserting the K-MAC adjuster (drill eccentric hole and weld/install KMAC bolt, twist to adjust suspension)...we should have measured more carefully....appears that are a bee's .....off which has limited the possible adjustment (can only get -1 neg) Anyway.....faced with a choice: 1) Remove - weld up - remeasure and redrill Don't really like this idea much. 2) Rose-joint front suspension (go the whole hog) 3) live with it (but would be nice to have everything 'right') The car is a daily driver. Would like to know: 1) Opinion on what is best option 2) Suggestions about who to speak to re: rose-jointing (hear that Robco engineering is the place to go?). 3) alternatives?

Huw replied to gav240z's topic in Cars For Sale
Darn, what I wouldn't give for a spare 20k...that one looks like fun. -
On a slightly cynical note....Why do the Zeds need the power steering? Mine has always been significantly lighter than previous cars that I have driven (pre 1980's) and even when compared with the modern cars I drive (Renault Cleo Sport, Alfa 147, Alfa 156) has never been a problem. Need the exercise anyway :-)
