280zx's still exist in a post-apocaliptic future.

Yeah I figured I'd try and keep the forum as family safe as possible, of course I'm sure if you guys get creative enough you can bypass the naughty word filter -
I think the problem with engine swaps is that people assume they will be a straight forward HP upgrade with no hassle and it will only cost $x in total. The reality is often far from the truth. Just ask any project manager what can go wrong, will go wrong . Problems with engine swaps: 1. You will need to get it engineered. This will have to comply with emission standards and may be forced to upgrade brakes and other mechanical items depending on your state. 2. Buying a half cut with a low km motor does not mean trouble free motoring. You may end up buying an engine that needs a lot of work or a rebuild (so back to square 1). 3. If you are fitting the motor yourself it might work out cheap depending on how handy you are with fabrication work and mechanical work, but don't forget all the little pieces ad up, especially if you with with genuine parts. 4. Being pulled up by the boys in blue will involve a lot more hassle and your car could be more easily defected for little things. It will depend on where and how you drive your car. 5. If you are not handy with electrical work you will need to pay an auto electrician to wire it up. Although I'm sure with enough time and effort and help from other forum members you could get their on your own. So provided you get through all the red tape, install the motor correctly, you will still be sitting on stock HP for the RB25de. As the others mentioned cams are more expensive as are other parts. My vote is to rebuild your L24 / L28. The displacement is far less important than the head, camshaft and intake, exhaust mods you do. In fact I prefer the way the smaller motors rev to the L28. A stock L28 block does not rev as nicely, although it produces more torque which is good. If I was going to build an L-series on a budget here is what I would do first. [*]240z SU carbs (rebuilt with minor mods for better flow) mounted on port matched intake to cylinder head [*]N42 head with larger SS valves [*]Stage 2 Port Work with Camshaft Profile to suit [*]Electronic Ignition mapped to camshaft profile also From there you could decide on gearbox, rear end ratio. If you wanted to invest in a set of triples (who doesn't? ), bore / stroke the block. If going NA and chasing bigger HP as Peter Allen said a V8 is probably the way to go. Also an L-series Z will probably retain slightly more value in the long term and is pretty easy to work with / on. You don't need buckets of power in an early Z to have a quick car. All this really depends on your budget and HP goal as Nzeder stated.

The forums internal search could yield better results too. I've noticed the results are not always that great and I've had feedback from member Sexual_Sushi about it too! The plan is to eventually migrate all site content to the 1 Content Mangement System which will make search a lot better, but also more powerful at the same time. To answer the OP question. 280zx suspension is completely different to the S30 series. The diff is about the only common factor, as far as I understand.

The Ebay Thread #2 - Post Ebay Parts Here!
gav240z replied to XRQTR's topic in Parts and Tools for Sale
I wish Santa brought me these for Christmas. http://page18.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/w46413369 Hayashi Racing Wheels, but what type I'm not 100% sure. I'd love to see these on a S30 Z. The price is a bit hefty though. -

They certainly look similar to these: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=310190284182 Very hard to tell from a photo. -

This is what drives me nuts about going out to bars and clubs especially in Australia. There is a real pill popping culture in Australia it seems and people who don't do drugs (such as myself) are forced to cough up $6 for a small bottle of water. So even if don't want to drink and be sober you get charged an arm and a leg for a bottle of water. I'd never try refilling in toilets because I just feel its dirty (I've seen enough club / bar) toilets to know it's best to avoid them if possible. However its ridiculous that you can't even refill a bottle of water. I'm not having a go at bouncers (they are just being told what to do) or you John I'm just venting that I hate the current club / night life scene for reasons such as this. Not to mention the music is rubbish .

Funny seller was going to take them to the tip, but decided to put them on eBay, glad he did. He scored $120+ for them . Hard to find parts too.

Website Forum Private Section
gav240z replied to gav240z's topic in Website Feedback & Club Discussions
Interesting points. I tend to agree that a private section is not really necessary and I think it would get seldom usage, but I could be wrong . If anything I think we have too many sections in the forum and i'd like to cull some of them, but I'm hoping to migrate the forum across to Drupal eventually which will mean the classifieds and events sections will get their own sections (instead of being part of the forum). I tend to agree I should give everyone a chance to purchase a car that comes along. -
Website Forum Private Section
gav240z replied to gav240z's topic in Website Feedback & Club Discussions
Interesting points I can see both sides of the argument. As an example I had a lady in Sydney contact us today with a 240z for sale that's been in storage for 15 years. Do I offer contact details to donating members first? Or do I post it in our classifieds for everyone? In the past I've always put cars for sale in the classifieds or told the seller to do it themselves. However with the scarcity of cars available I'm wondering if 'donating enthusiasts' should get first dibs? Or perhaps I'm taking this thread in a wrong direction. A private forum for admins would be ok, problem is there is Lurch, Sulio, Craig and I and we all communicate via email so a private forum seems like overkill. -
As an off-shoot to the Lancefield collection thread I would like to say as webmaster of Auszcar.com that I have no plans to create such a section. I also do not feel that a joining fee for Auszcar.com is necessary, the web is a medium in which information is free and accessible to everyone and I think that creating a fee based structure or private forum section would hold little benefit to members of the community. I think trying to implement any such system would kill our community and website. I would however like to open the discussion to members of the community and get your feedback since you opinion is what counts most.

So I found the thread where I posted it. http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,935.0.html Nobody has been able to tell me what model it comes from. I'm pretty certain it was a Turbo 280zx maybe an early 1 or the later series 280zx. It definitely has the Mitsubishi logo which I suppose isn't that unusual. I guess it has a serial number so if anyone has a part reference guide they might be able to help. I don't believe modules are interchangeable between the 2 types of dizzy. Sorry to sort of take the thread off topic.
-
Yeah the E12-80 module is still available quite easily from the US or Nissan Australia. They are expensive though from Australian dealers so use eBay . I have another distributor which is a Mitsubishi Type (that was fitted to some 280zx's) its not the optical type, but another type which is apparently very good. The design certainly appears to be superior to that of the E12. The E12 dizzy has a ball bearing cage which breaks and causes the advance to stop working. I posted some pics a while ago of the other type I will try and find it.

The Lancefeild Collection (13 Zeds in a Paddock).
gav240z replied to Sirpent's topic in Cars For Sale
John - this may be of interest to you (See attachment to this post) Where (not set) = people who have not signed in, in the last 3-4 months. So a mix of forum lurkers (trolls sounds a bit nasty doesn't it?) / members who haven't signed in for that long. auszcar_member should be fairly self explanatory 12725_965981328589b3ca9453db5a19c0ad5cd70fdd48.pdf -

Oh and John just to let you know that we have had 80 new members register within the last 30 days. That's compared to the previous 30 days where only 38 registered. So maybe those Forum Trolls did register . -

Just to add though, he did have cars on Ebay and it was possible to see other Zeds in the background so anyone browsing Ebay with half a brain would have given him a call anyway or sent him an email through eBay to ask about them . -

Well I knew a lot of people were looking for Z's, but 40 odd people showing up? That's just crazy, I have a feeling at this rate you are right, the Z will be the next XB / XC Falcon and the days of finding a bargain are becoming increasingly limited. I have to agree with Hunterzed, and say thanks for taking the time to put everything together. I guess in future you should keep contact details to yourself . -
Hi Everyone, Here are some photos I took when I was in Barcelona and attended a vintage car show. http://picasaweb.google.com/gavindoolan/BarcelonaCarShow071209 Thought some of you might like to see the pictures. There was 1 2 seater 280zx but it was rusty and beat up. http://picasaweb.google.com/gavindoolan/BarcelonaCarShow071209#5415248239599082994 and 1 Toyota Celica Supra http://picasaweb.google.com/gavindoolan/BarcelonaCarShow071209#5415249068079043714 Otherwise it was all European and American cars.

I just bought a Zed. Now I belong!!!
gav240z replied to MaygZ's topic in Introductions and Forum Etiquette
Its my understanding from previous posts that making up the frame rails is easier than buying new ones. Its not that expensive to get them made if you provide the right dimensions the expensive part is getting someone to weld them in place. I think Lurch likes his beer full strength, but I'll let him confirm that. -
Awesome what a beautiful looking machine.

Good thing my girlfriend doesn't get upset the way I rant and rave about them. In fact I rant and rave about a lot of things. My friends are sick of hearing about the 240z, they were all into those 'other cars' like skylines, silvia's, 180sx's and those other forms of mundane transport . Looks like you have plenty of work to do there. So what are the plans for it, modified or original? -
Welcome, all the best with your search. My current evaluation of 240z's in Australia: 1 - Poor Condition - Swiss Cheese Project Price Range: $2,500 for rolling shell through to $4,500 - $5000 for a complete car. 2 - Good Condition - Drivable - ready for registration a bit rusty but not structural. Price Range: $8,000 - $15,000 dependent on condition of vehicle and how original it is. 3 - Great Condition - Possibly restored within the past 5 - 8 years or so. Good paint, decent interior, bodywork is good (possibly but not necessarily bare metal resto). Price Range: $20,000 - $24,000 (depends on work done) 4 - Concourse / Race Car / Competition Vehicle / Modified - Serious coin spent on this car or lots of work detail gone into it. This could be used to describe a bare metal concourse restoration or a full race car with serious race engine, handling work, log books, history etc.. I've seen prices from $24,000 - $50,000 although I doubt many Z's have changed hands at the $50k mark. In fact the highest price I've heard so far (anyone correct me if I'm wrong) is around $45k for Gavin Strongman's 260z - which was / is an excellent car. These values are strictly reflective of the Australian market and HS30 cars. When it comes to cars outside our market or with special chassis designations (PS30 / HS30-H / S30) or competitive history all bets are off. As other early Japanese cars such as the Mazda rotaries become more expensive to buy and Australian muscle cars get even harder to obtain many will turn toward other alternatives such as the 240z / 260z and their under appreciation and undervalued status will change. The low number of Zeds initially imported by Nissan won't help the situation. If anything I see the potential for more people to start considering importing HLS30 cars from the states and converting such vehicles to RHD. The US still has many great cars available for a very reasonable price.

The Lancefeild Collection (13 Zeds in a Paddock).
gav240z replied to Sirpent's topic in Cars For Sale
Hmmm so now I understand where all the 240z's have gone. Between this guy, our wood chipper friend and the guy in outback Victoria with 30 zeds in a paddock we now know where they have all disappeared to. It's a shame to see them in such a sad state. Hopefully common sense will prevail and he'll see the opportunity to clean up his backyard, make some cash and put that money toward getting 1 or 2 of the Z's he wants to keep on the road again, maybe even that wild turbo 1 hiding under the tarp. If they sit there any longer, I think they will actually decrease in value due to the fact that they will deteriorate that much further. Although perhaps some people are desperate enough for a Z they will fork out a good 5k for a rust bucket that looks like swiss cheese in the next couple of years (I hope not for our sake). @Sirpent - In a way I hope you are right in likening the 240z / 260z to the old XB / XC Falcons, but on the other hand I hope you're wrong for purely selfish reasons I do hope to buy another 240z some day.
