  2. I think I've seen some on eBay or Yahoo! auctions around the $200 AU mark. Let me know if you want the links to the products and I'll look it up.
  3. I thought this was a feature not a fault... I seem to recall my previous Zeds having less than stellar wiper motor performance.
  4. Mirrors. About $250 AU. http://page18.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/w94280940
  5. Bit of a thread resurrection, but with my Safari Gold car there is several minor cracks in the dash, really not too bad considering what I have seen in the past though. I've read through this thread and the ClassicZcars thread also, and I have found other car forums with a similar technique to the ClassicZcar thread. http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/spider-1966-up/191720-how-fix-dashboard-cracks.html#post1104071 http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/703234-911-dash-repair.html The way I see it I have 4 options. Option 1 - Buy new. Pro: Perfect finish to OEM spec. Con: Cost. Option 2 - Dashboard Doctor in Melbourne. Pro: Excellent repair, as I have this in my 72 240z. Con: Cost, I believe the going rate is about $600 now? Which seems a little steep considering a few years ago it was more like $300-$400. Wonder why the price hike? Also I believe they use a vacuum formed cap over the top of the original which means it's slightly thicker and fitting the gauges can be difficult and extra tight, my previous owner on my 72 240z cracked the housing of 1 the gauges probably due to the tight fit. It's not very noticeable but I see it . Option 3 - Dash Cap Repair. See http://www.dashtop.com/products/dash-cover-1973-datsun-240z Pro: Could be a close replication of original finish. Con: The half caps look garbage so that's out, the full caps could be a good fit, but I've not had much experience with them. The full dash cap I saw posted on ClassicZcars didn't require the removal of gauges or dashboard itself so you can actually see it doesn't cover everywhere correctly. http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/interior-s30/48276-full-dash-cover-installation-help.html See photos post #27 onward. http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/interior-s30/48276-full-dash-cover-installation-help.html#post421479 The other issue is I don't know if anyone makes a full cap for RHD cars? I've only so far found a half cap here. http://www.datsunparts.com/Z-Car-Parts Ideally a full cap would require removal of the dashboard and wrap all the way around everywhere As in it would be an entirely new skin formed to fit like the original. Somehow I don't think this is available though? Option 4 - Try the flexible filler + bed liner spray method to get a good hair-grain type finish. http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/interior-s30/23919-dash-repair-process-pictures.html Pro: Cheap and cheerful - gives a good finish, doesn't make the gauge pods any tighter and appears to be quite durable based on feedback on ClassicZcars thread. Con's: The pattern will be different (ok by me and same as the dashboard doctor option), it could still crack again in other areas of the dash, since the skin is 40+ years old now. The only other concern I have is that doing this repair could lead to a more expensive repair should I opt for Dashboard Doctor or similar in future (if I'm not happy with the finish for example). As mentioned earlier in the thread by John. http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,1618.msg84995.html#msg84995 It seems this process is very similar to what the Dash Doctor would do except for the vacuum forming of a new skin. So I'm leaning toward option #4 - but if anyone else has attempted this I'd love you hear your feedback on the outcome / results and if you were happy with them? Option 5 - Go Flock Your Dash. http://bringatrailer.com/2008/08/26/vintage-rally-spec-rhd-1973-datsun-240z/ Flocking is popular on rally cars due to the glare reduction factor and gives a 'race car' look and feel. However I don't think this is the look I'm going for with my particular build. Hence not something I'm seriously looking at, although I do like it on that car!
  6. That's Johnny's phone number A.K.A Fairlady Z on here.
  7. I have that same valve cover and love hate relationship. I want to powder coat mine and offset it against polished carbs .
  8. Amazing what some small changes can do for the look of the car over all. Although personally I don't think you need the front spoiler on it, would be fine with the standard valance piece also. Great that you've had the car for so long now. Would be hard to let go of such a car with so much history in it.
  9. Hi guys, I came across this thread looking for this build thread the other day and I figured it was worth sharing. http://zengarage.com.au/2014/01/babalouies-hakosuka/ I particularly wanted to call out this part for those who might feel intimidated about taking on a project car.
  10. I was wondering same thing actually. My assumption is that you will need to trim it down for a 240z but it would be good to confirm if this is true. Is the pattern of this panel the same between years?
  11. To clarify the front is the same but the rear bumper is wider.
  12. 2 seated ones should fit I think 2+2 also can fit but are a little wide so would need trimming down.
  13. Looks great I can see why the blokes with the tyre shop were so excited. In South Africa they love their Datsun's that's for sure.
  14. I didn't get onto it yet, but thanks for the advice all the same. Not the most exciting update, but it was quite a bit of work so figured I'd mention it... I'm happy to report I finally got the 240z into the garage. Why is this a big deal? Well if you saw what I started with the garage was a bit of a mess and full of junk from the previous tenant / landlord. It wasn't a horrendous mess, but if you saw what was stored in cupboards etc.. You'd feel overwhelmed like I did. Being an investment property for the landlord he certainly doesn't spent lots of cash on renovations so the garage is quite cobbled together in a handy man / left over building supplies type way. It works for me because I don't feel it's so precious if I spill a bit of oil I'll be paying through the nose on my rental deposit. It's also cheap rent for Sydney and ticks all the boxes, close to work, good location, yard (gf is getting a puppy) and has a garage - which can store 2 small sports cars! Anyway after removing a mountain of dust, dirt, old paint tins, chemical tins with god knows what, building supplies and a spare toilet - yes I said toilet! I moved the work bench that was at the end of the garage to the side. I had previously measured up the 2 cars with tape to see how long they were and checked it against the length of the garage. It said I have 40cm to spare but I was still skeptical I'd done all measuring right. I got the help of my g/f to roll the damn thing (with 4 flat tyres) around and reverse it into the garage. All I'll say is that was a good workout, I was done by the time we got it in the garage. With all the grunting going on I think the neighbours were wondering what's going on. I saw them take a peek out the window and I smiled and waved back. I'll post a few pics in a minute, but I'm so happy after spending the last 3 days working to get the garage ready that both cars are now safely undercover. I was worried a hail storm may come and damage the body on the 240z further. Now I can relax, pull the motor out and get cracking on this thing in the comfort of a garage. I'll need to get some trolley wheels to roll the 240z around at some point, but all in good time. Hopefully future updates will be more exciting!
  15. Thanks guys will do shortly, but I might end up buying a stand a few cheapies going on eBay at the minute and it's something I may need for a while. The crane is a different story though. Will PM shortly.
  16. Quick Question. I was trying to get the center console out but 1 of the screws holding it in is fairly rusted in and of course the head of the screw has started to shear causing the screw driver to slip. Now I'm not sure how to get it out, there is no way to get vise grips on it. I was thinking of using an impact screwdriver to try and turn it but I'm worried it might crack the console plastic underneath. The other idea I had was to tack weld onto the screw and try and turn it that way (when I get the welder)? But I thought I'd ask here to see if anyone had creative ideas? I'm thinking of trying to restore the console myself, since it's not split but blistered / cracked along the top but otherwise looks good.
  17. I'm not in a rush right now, it's the last thing on my list to be honest. But I do want to get rid of the Hot Wires, I shudder each time I look at them . Other odds and sods I'm chasing whilst I remember. 1. 240z rear licence plate light unit (plastic). 2. 240z rear strut tower plastic covers. 3. Straight unbent rear tail light garnish - not urgent but mine is bent a little and might be able to straighten it out ok, but if someone has 1 cheap I'll grab it.
  18. Are you looking for new 260z ones or 240z ones? There are a few reproduction units floating about on eBay US at the moment. Refer to links I posted here: http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,13674.msg144898.html#msg144898 Although I am not sure what 240z rear lights would look like on a 260z 2+2, would be interesting to see that! These guys also do reproduction units. http://jdm-car-parts.com/restoration/our-240z-tail-lights-are-back/ http://shop.jdm-car-parts.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=67 For some purists (sometimes I'm guilty of this) it's gotta be OEM, but given the price of new units I think reproductions would be an excellent alternative. Seems the quality of such units varies though, the jdm-car-parts.com ones look best!
  19. With a clean up mine will look that good. Just need stickers and trumpets .
  20. They look more like SSR meshies than Hot Wires.
  21. Hi mate, I decided to split this topic as it's worth calling out on its own. Really top quality work! Which can be applied to any Datsun.
  22. Paul, if I consider a career change and want to restore cars for a living I'll be begging you to give me a job! Looks like you do some top notch work mate keep it up!
  23. By the way their Facebook page is here. https://www.facebook.com/ironladyimports If it's Kristian Appelt then yes it is.
  24. Bah hahah I was gonna ask same thing. They look same same but Lurch says different. Rare to find without bloody 80s special speaker holes in them.
  25. Is it an early 240z hatch with vents or later 1? Do you have a 240z drivers door? Or a good bonnet? Might give you a call to see what's what
