  1. That car has my roof skin. Shame about the fire..
  2. Lip spoiler is definitely sold mate.
  3. So yesterday I pulled all the plugs out and tried again, same result really. I could only get it to move a fraction with a massive breaker bar about a meter long. I'm sure I've turned over an L-series before with far less pressure. So I bolted up the engine removal hooks and I'm going to pull it out. Anybody in NSW got an engine stand + crane / cherry picker I could borrow for a while? As tempting as it is to throw a second hand motor in it and say bobs your tea pot I want to learn how to rebuild an L-series and give it a go. The only thing that is going to be hard is to resist the temptation to modify it while it's apart. I am going for a refresh rather than modified performance engine to stick with my budget build theme. Once it's back on the road - after the rust repairs. I'll consider pulling it out and going a bit more crazy with it.
  4. Reproduction units. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Datsun-240z-260z-JDM-tail-light-lenses-taillights-euro-clear-amber-red-/400638740982 Pretty good price really. Only missing the Koito stamps and numbers on the units. Also doesn't come with the chrome trim it appears. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Datsun-240Z-Taillight-WITH-TRIM-PIECES-/271362619364 This 1 comes with the trim but they removed the reflector part in the center for some reason? I kinda like it though a bit cleaner...
  5. It can all be easily fixed - relatively. The problem is the asking price considering what it needs.
  6. Hope that helps clarify?
  7. Anyone driving from Melbourne to Sydney soon? Need a welder transported.

    I've been looking also. http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/serpentine/engine-engine-parts-transmission/datsun-260-z-recon-head-and-short-motor/1035210969 http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/131086672112?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/251418396212?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/121249188162?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649
  9. I've removed gearbox and engine as 1 unit before. This time though I'll just remove the engine I think. I've started reading the how to rebuild your L-series book. Not sure if I'll use the N42 head I have in Melbourne or E31 on it yet. I don't have a P90 anymore unfortunately it was 'stolen' from me by a certain individual a few years ago. I thought an engine shop still had it, but they informed me a certain individual picked it up and also owes the engine shop money. RE: Vinyl there is quite a few places offering a kit. I've found some for $260 + Shipping. I was just looking at options to get a kit recreated, but not sure the savings will be all that much to be honest.
  10. I remember when you were selling it and I was thinking man, it's such a nice car he should keep it. But I guess you had other plans, I still regret selling my first Z, but looking back at my circumstances at the time it made sense I guess. Anyway I also found this old video I think you sent me at the time? You really have to see these cars in person all dressed up in GTR spec to fully appreciate their shape and style.
  11. Sure, I can leave a deposit if you like to hold it?
  12. Fair point really, it was getting late so I packed it in and had dinner. Will try again tonight. I was told the motor is seized, so far I'd believe it. In other news I discovered something positive, it appears the diamond vinyl trans and strut cover material is still in the car! I was never so glad to have a lazy auto-trimmer who didn't remove the old ones, just glued the shag carpet over the top. I removed the fuse cover and was like, what? Diamond vinyl? Then I slowly peeled this off. To reveal... So I might be able to use these as a template to get replica's made? I am hoping the shag pile carpet helped protect the original trim over the years. In other news I also salvaged these engine hooks off my old L24 when I was in Melbourne so I could easily remove the engine block. These are missing on 98% of Z-cars I've seen. I wonder if there is interest in getting them replicated? Perhaps we could powder coat them or finish them for a bit of engine bay dressing?
  13. Also it is a 2+2 so the rear garnish is slightly wider than on the 2 seaters. So you'll need to fabricate the 240z surround to be a bit wider. I would just black out the copious use of Chrome surround on the 260z units. Makes them look less busy.
  14. Gah I should have got this when I was in Melbourne mate. Waiting on my next pay cheque.
  15. So in my attempt to get something done today I decided I would see if I could turn the engine by hand. I first had to remove a clutch fan that had rusted itself in place. I finally removed it though. Then slotted a ratchet over the main crank bolt and tried to rotate the motor. I was using a large breaker bar and it was moving very slowly. Mind you I couldn't really tell if it was the motor moving or me rounding off the main crank bolt. I think the former though. I was turning clockwise by the way. I didn't have the spark plugs removed but they are all loosely screwed in. Would it be worth removing them all and trying again? I couldn't really move it without the breaker bar just using a ratchet. It has been a few weeks since I hit the gym though. Thoughts?
  16. Don't suppose you know if the sale is still on? http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/Weldskill-135-MIG-Welder.aspx?pid=346523#Cross http://www.masters.com.au/masters/navigation/product_details.jsp Seems prices are around $370 now. By the way are these welding helmets good? http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/Weldskill-Auto-Darkening-Welding-Helmet.aspx?pid=215565#Cross
  17. My g/f sent me this today. http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/search-for-rare-320000-rennmax-race-car-stolen-from-rowville-melbourne/story-e6frg6n6-1226796235774 To what end would stealing this work for someone? I mean you can't sell it, can't race it. You could only steal some of the parts, but then what? And what do people hope to do with it?

  20. No but i found this seller . http://www.ebay.com/itm/DATSUN-5-SPEED-WOOD-SHIFT-KNOB-1200-240Z-510-240K-B10-B110-120Y-Bluebrid-NISSAN-/221178204739 Although I suspect it's the JDM market version. The AU market 1 looks like this. http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/attachments/interior-s30/55714d1345443638-maple-shift-knob-restoration-anyone-have-one-unbroken-plastic-gear-map-2012-07-27-20.36.24.jpg
  21. Hi Everyone, If you are looking at buying a car from abroad such as an S30 Z from the US of A (think of those dry states!) or Japan I can recommend dealing with Iron Lady Imports as part of the importation process. http://ironladyimports.com/ Craig at Iron Lady Imports helped me through a long and arduous process of filing in multiple items of paper work and dealing with shipping companies, insurance companies, customs officials, compliance etc.. for my FD RX-7 which I'm happy to say has now been with me in Sydney for a couple of months and arrived unscathed during the whole process. Before you import a vehicle it helps to get a quote from Craig on what the expected costs for a specific make and model would be. You'll also need import approval to bring a car in, so make sure it falls under the relevant importation scheme before purchasing.
  22. Speak to James Flett @ MIA Engine Service in Dee Why. https://maps.google.com.au/maps?q=MIA+Engine+Service&ll=-33.735814,151.283026&spn=0.016078,0.026715&fb=1&gl=au&hq=MIA+engines+Dee+WHy&cid=5575497944948613566&t=m&z=16&layer=c&cbll=-33.735939,151.283008&panoid=7tC2xiCuIQxEhJdsY35NcQ&cbp=12,292.07,,0,3.11 Peter Mac and Les Collins in Victoria are also very good as I'm sure other members on here will tell you.
  23. I find original second hand pieces are difficult to source. I got a set of OEM door cards (second hand) and I haven't seen another set come up in quite a few years worth installing in my Z. I would buy brand new but my 72 240z is red and it was originally silver from factory so I'm thinking I might 1 day go back to Silver and do the red interior, hence it doesn't make sense to buy brand new OEM door cards in black, then again I'm not sure you can get them in red from Nissan still? Anything can be sourced if you're going to use the Internet, some things are harder to find than others. Rubber seals are pretty easy to get and there is various options out there, aftermarket wise quality varies but OEM can still be sourced. By far the challenge is rust free panels. Although there are quite a few people now supplying rust free sections to suit the Z for all the 'common places'. If you can avoid a car with a sunroof but these days it's hard to be really picky with what's left. A 2 seater roof skin is quite hard to find, well ask me in a year or 2 if I still think so perhaps? Cheap L28's are getting harder to find in wreckers, just simply because there is less cars being broken these days that are still running this motor, although a search on Gumtree for MQ Patrol with L28 returns several results and they are often being broken... I guess some of the AU specific parts are probably the hardest to find these days, for example an OEM door mirror for a 240z. I've been looking for years now! Although I've found a chap in North American who has reproduced them now, so I'll probably buy 1 from him. Diamond vinyl sets, I've looked at making reproductions but first need a set of originals for copy. Again you can get them already reproduced but results vary. Original 240z tail lights are expensive new and don't come up often second hand, but 260z ones are easier to find due to the 2+2's using same cluster design just different rear light panel. As you know the body work is your biggest expense, the rest relatively cheap, especially when compared to other marques.
  24. Anyone here buy this? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/240z-260z-five-speed-shift-button-/251413177558 I couldn't go much higher than $45 for the plastic button only...although they certainly don't come up often these days either.
  25. This is just my personal preference but I don't like the autometer style gauges in a 240z. I prefer the OEM look myself. You could look at Kameari Gauges if you're looking for something aftermarket? http://www.zccjdm.com/catalog.php/azcarbum/dt0/pd882223/Kameari_Gauge_Kit Or there is a couple of threads on here for Speedhut gauges. See: http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,3000.0/nowap.html http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,8201.0/nowap.html Which I personally find less 'boy racer' in style.
