Safari Brown... I mean Gold - The NSW Project
gav240z replied to gav240z's topic in Members Project(s) Journal
I haven't updated this thread in a bit. The rear hatch is mostly done. Although the time suck will be all the little details that will be hard to show in photos. I managed to pick up a bunch of spares the other week from Adam (previous owner of the Brown Hornet). He was feeling charitable since he was knocking his garage over and wanted to get rid of stuff. Seeing what a NOS console surround piece sold for recently on eBay I also feel like I robbed him, but he did set the price. The good thing was it came with the defrost switch. So if I can find 1 I'd like to get an early rear vertical defrost hatch glass. I love the look of it on early cars. I spent a bit of time on the tail light housings, I couldn't remove the brownish stains on them. Which are either from exhaust fumes or the yellowing / aging of the plastic housings - perhaps UV exposure also? The vinyl paint I got from Supercheap Auto was probably a bit too dark in colour. So on the next set I do I might try VHT light gray here. But I think they look 100% better than the brown / aged look. I also installed the reproduction chrome trim pieces for completeness. They are not perfect, but considering the cost of NOS housings + tail lamps I think they look good. My tafe class is on break right now, so bodywork will probably wait a couple of weeks before more progress. It should give me some time to file my tax return(s) - haven't done last year and I'll know what I owe the government (not expecting a refund sadly) and once I've dealt with that I can start spending money on the bottom end rebuild and the 71A gear bag. I also picked up a dolly from Jason (dat2kman) so I can put the shell up on a trolley type support and then remove the sub-frames for rebuilding components off the car. -
So this will likely be my last post in this thread, I think from here on it's going to be hard to document the subtle differences I'll need to make to get this hatch 100% perfect. A lot of it involves feel for high / low spots which are hard to photograph. To join the original and new lower hatch skin we used a MIG welder, Oxy was a concern because it could cause distortion with the heat and since we can't hammer it from the rear this was a better idea.

Yeah it looks like a twin choke set up out of a 240z. Mine didn't sell in the end (no bites locally) so I gave it to a friend in the US who helps me source 240z parts. I can't complain I got 6 or so early D hubcaps through him - seems fair to me . Alex if you want to sell it let me know? I like having spares and could probably figure out how to replace what might be missing. It looks mostly complete.

If a price isn't listed in the next day or so I'm deleting this ad. Thanks.

Awesome I'm going to get my 260z close ratio box rebuilt for my 72 240z. I also want to install a 4.1 R180 LSD, thinking of slapping the Triple Mikuni 44's on it also. I can't wait to see what difference it makes. I'm envious because I really want to get to the point where I have the early 240z up and running and can spend my weekends tinkering with carbs . Honestly I do, I have loads of fun doing stuff like that.

So not quite satisfied with the brownish tinge left on the housings from age. I decided to get some vinyl paint in gray to restore the original housing look. The paint was probably a bit too dark gray for my liking but it does look a whole lot better now. Before: Masking + paint After photos. Left side. Right side. The pair. With the new chrome trims on there they look the business. Now truth be told this pair was actually not quite as good as another set I've got, so having learnt quite a bit about how to restore these now I might give restoration of the other set a go. Another thing I'd also like to try on the lens is to spray them with some clear coat and buff them using my dual action polisher. I reckon the gloss level would go to level 11.

Ask the owner yourself perhaps? Pretty sure Glen owns it. https://www.facebook.com/haruo/photos?source_ref=pb_friends_tl

That P76 is a wildcard indeed. I was in Balmain the other night and saw a P76 and was telling an American chap who was over for work purposes that they were a real perplexing car when released. Perhaps unfairly bashed based on styling and other company problems. Yet look at it, seems to do well in the Rally environment. Really built for Australian conditions and to last it would appear!

Well the audience for JJJ tends to be young hipsters. So that's probably half the reason. I'm all for doing a trade, shame my IT job pays so much better. -

But widebody ZG's are 'period correct'. Just look at these Fairlady 240ZR's. http://www.yatsuzaka.com/gallery/PC/N-Z.HTML A lot of S30Z's being raced in North America also had the widebody ZG style applied. -

This Brexit stuff is interesting... despite being told by every Economist, every world banking organisation and countless politicians that an exit would be bad for Britain, the majority look to be in favour of leaving the EU. I can't help but think that a lot of the challenges the UK are facing are similar to what Australia is facing. It will be interesting to see if this has any impact on our own election in a couple of weeks. Neither major political party (Liberal / Labor) wants to talk about the elephant in the room. Worth listening to this interview on 2UE. Which all sounds reasonable to me. http://www.2ue.com.au/news/sustainable-australia-partys-william-bourke-talks-to-john--garry-20160621-gpo0cv.html I still haven't made up my mind on who I'll vote for this coming election but I am starting to lean more toward the Sustainable Australia party or at least giving them a preference vote. -

I know it's not about S30Z's but I can really relate to what he says in this article. http://www.motortrend.com/news/freigner-lead-singer-kelly-hansen-celebrity-drive/ Of course I too am a famous lead singer of a world wide successful band. . But on a serious note the reason I linked to it here is that I think it highlights 1 of the reasons why people are chasing classic cars, the ability to work on them and the simplicity of them is very rewarding.
