Hey guys I was just wondering what the average size shed you guys have and have managed to restore your Z's.

I have just spent the weekend finding mine. After a couple of years renovating the house it had a lot of crap in it.

I have about 7 x 4 m workable space I'm hoping that gives me enough room. There is always the driveway.

Just interested on your thought. One day i may even have a car to put in it.

Thanks

Matt

i have a 4 car garage (2 wide, 2 deep)

In it i have a workbench along the back occupying one half of the rear wall, on the other half is bulk storage for engine stands, the crane, spare motors ect.

There are shelves along both sides with assorted crap all over them.

Smack bang in the middle is the money black hole, otherwise known as a Z.

I manage to squeeze a bit of room at the rear for my bike.

I dont think i'd want anything else taking up precious project space ;D

Rule #1: Man must have a shed.

Rule#2: Imagine the biggest shed and it will never be big enough.

Rule #3: The bigger the shed the more you will collect.

Therfore you Z collection will be limited by shed size (and $).

Here endeth the lesson.

Mine was done in the shed 7m x 7.5m at my parents place.

has a decent size bench and lot of large tools ie bench drill, grinder, press etc..

But still it's bit small. Like said above never big enough.

Now building a new one at my own place and biggest council will allow me to have was 11.5m x 7m x 3m high walls. Planing to have a spray booth and hoist. Sobprob fit 3 cars and work area. And yes still think could be bigger lol

Really dimmension u mention should be sufficient as work area. But u have to store parts elsewhere.

My shed is about 1 1/2 cars long and about 2 wide with a bench along the back and crap down either side. My lighting collection (Don't ask..don't know why) takes a fair bit of space as do spare zed bits I've been collecting over the years. Fits the zed with some room but need to get rid of all that lighting to have plenty of room.

PS. if anyone needs around 3-4 km's of road they need lit up, send me a PM..hahaha

Wow I was about to say i don't think i have enough space then I read this.

I guess I will have to do with the space I have. I just hope it works for me.

I don't like my chances of any rotisserie work being done.

personally i think the best guide is to park your car, open BOTH doors and measure the width.

thats the MINIMUM workspace you want on both sides.

On that, you want at least 1.5M in front and 1M at rear, Bare minimum space.

That doesnt include workbench space.

you want at least 1M at the front of your bench, and NOT in the 1.5M of space in the front of the car.

more space is better, any smaller and it gets cluttered, garanteed you'll accidentally damage the car with not enough space too.

Also, my best peice of advice (if you are going to be doing fab work)

Make sure if you have a peice in your vice (or on your grinder) the sparks arent flying in the direction of the car.

At worst, you'll burn hot metal into the paint.

more than likley, it'll appear as a dust on the paint.

When you go to brush it off, it acts as VERY abrasive sandpaper.

makes a mess of your nice paintwork.

Not big enough.

I am in the progress of building a 7.7m x 7.7m shed. One bay (3m) will be a carpark and toilet/shelving area, the remaining space will be car working/workshop space. Even with this size shed I have convinced myself that this will be an inbetween shed. Good for the next 5 years, but for the next shed I will be looking for something about 7.5m span by approx 15m long, that should give me 4 car working bays plus a 7.5m x 3m workshop area. I think that will satisfy me (I think, hell I haven't even got my current shed yet and I am already dreaming about my next one).

My house in on a hill and has a sealed garage running under the house. 3 cars by 2 will fit with a separate workshop room off the side. Front and rear access.  Its fantastic!

Never big enough. Well we used to have a 12 x 7 in my first house - zed not at home back then - still in the panel shop. Then our current house used to have 11 x 7 but one of the garages was converted into an office (were I am now) and dedicated laundry (not a laundry in the first bay of the garage) so I could not give up a 3 x 7 space without having a replacement.

The replacement is a 6.6 x 7 and this finally houses the zed (with the ride on mower the only non zed thing in the shed) this is next to the sharing shed which is 15 x 10, and when the father in-law let me tidy it up will have a hoist and like (4 m high) - long story but the father-in law used to lease the land that we now own, so he is 74 and he still thinks of the shed as his - so this is why I build the 6.6 x 7 just for the zed.

As it is a farm there is the hay shed (stores other machinery + hay) which is 15x15, the wood shed (go figure for the firewood) 8x4 + all the little sheds for chainsaws and firewood near the house 2 of them 3 x 3

And the last shed is the shed/granny flat the in-laws live in 12 x 7 with 3.6m stud = hoist can go in the double garage in there when they move on.

And as stated the more space you have the more stuff you have to full it :(

I'd have room for another two car's or 4 vintage MX bikes if is wasn't for 150 bales of horse race fuel, as the wife call's them, or cubes of misery as i call them...

Don't get to worried.  My workshop is about 7m X 6m as a workarea and I've pumped out a number of Zeds in the last couple of years!

I use the father in laws shed 50x50 ft but it was not big enough so he bought the house next door and then  built a new the 50 x 50 shed. He then need more space because the shed he  built wasn't big enough so he bought the house a cross the road and built another shed. total storage in town 18 car bay plus hoist  plus sand blasting shed. Plus 6 bay just out of town that his wife don't now about. He is now look for another shed because you can never have two many sheds. or projects

Shouldn't be too worried about your shed size. It's nice to be able to open both doors and still walk freely around the car, but at the end of the day, you can work on your car in a smaller space. It's all about how you can utilize whatever space you have.

Cheers.

Re the comments about nice to have both door open etc - if your space is limited and you are working on the car for some time - remove the doors and hang them above the car (securely of course) this way you don't need to worry about the space they take up when open + makes working inside the car easier :)

EDIT: That is what I have done - hung stuff up out of the way giving more room to work on the car - the parts will come of the walls/ceiling and onto the car in due time.

20m x 10m and then some, bit full, too many skylines @ present, had 10 zeds now like 1 zed and 4 skylines, 1 s15, 1 van and 3 motorbikes..... and lots of storage space a hoist and massive electric engine hoist  (moveable...), still not enough,

I want to be able to do donughts in my wkshop....

I should of known better ::). Asking a guy how big is his shed, Is like asking how hot his girlfriend is. Everyone wants to brag.

I am green with envy. I was hoping I would get a bunch of guys saying the had smallish garages but they coped ok with it.

Here I am with my pissy 7x4 shed that the floor even runs down hill wondering if I might be struggling.

Mind you, The Rev sounds like he kinda made do  :(

Well I will only know when the time comes I guess.

I think you'll find that a lot of guys on here have worked and managed in similar space to what you have. 7x4 shed is nothing to be sneezed at. You have room to move, as long as you utilize your space.

As suggested by NZeder, take the doors off and hang them up, there's also a great pic on here of a restoration workshop in Japan with body panels hung on the wall to save space. There's heaps of little things you can do to free up more space and if you really want to do it, you will find the space. You just have to plan your area a bit more carefully. Just look at the quality of the cars produced by rev in similar space.
