RB30X Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 That 'tool' you've got there Peter can be easily replicated with the white plastic section of a drinking nozzle from a 'Pump' water bottle. The things you find at night and on weekends when the shops are closed. Gives you more clearance too. Quote
KatoKid Posted June 4, 2011 Author Posted June 4, 2011 Momentous occasion for yours truly..... and I was inspired enough to post my first YouTube video. To say I was relieved when it started straight away is a massive understatement! Bit of pain along the way but lots of win in the end! Watch all about it... Quote
Sirpent Posted June 4, 2011 Posted June 4, 2011 BRILLIANT David, Congratulations ! For some stupid reason the sound isn't working on my speakers nevertheless the sight of it in action still paid divedends. Cheers John Quote
PeterAllen Posted June 4, 2011 Posted June 4, 2011 David - You have gone from being a mere Legend to a Dead Set Legend. Great work. Quote
Bigfella Posted June 4, 2011 Posted June 4, 2011 I have only just closed my jaw.... Freeeking awesome. Matty O Quote
KatoKid Posted June 4, 2011 Author Posted June 4, 2011 Thanks guys. John, this is my first YouTube effort so let me know if the sound is a problem, works on my wife's laptop fine? You need to hear the terrible sound at the first start! Was fairly sh..ting myself when I first heard it but had a good listen and was reasonably confident it wasn't a bottom end issue. Realised I wasn't going to be able to sleep until I proved it, hence the late night thrash...... Quote
NZeder Posted June 4, 2011 Posted June 4, 2011 You must be happy about that David well on the second start after you prove the tray was the issue I am going to use up some airpoints one day and come for a visit when this is all going. Quote
chris240 Posted June 4, 2011 Posted June 4, 2011 well my laptop picked up the sound magnificently........ that test bench belongs in a art gallery well bloody done. (posting of the year !) Quote
RB30X Posted June 4, 2011 Posted June 4, 2011 So in brief for those that only flicked through the YouTube clip the tapping noise on first start was the number two rod cap hitting on something in the sump. And this clearance issue was to do with you using a different sump? And since you've identified and rectified the problem, it's sounds much better and you're full steam ahead? Congrats on the engine stand too, and getting that thing to run with all the electricery required. I bet you've learned a great deal about BMW in the last few weeks. Quote
KatoKid Posted June 4, 2011 Author Posted June 4, 2011 Congrats on the engine stand too, and getting that thing to run with all the electricery required. I bet you've learned a great deal about BMW in the last few weeks. A few weeks.....I wish. I started researching what was required to run the engine with the factory ECU and security system before I even made the decision to buy the engine from the UK as going aftermarket ECU just wasn't going to be cost effective. I couldn't put a figure on how many hours Ive spent researching and pouring over the BMW wiring diagrams to get to a point where I understood how it all worked and was confident I knew what I was doing. Sirpent Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 Hi David, With all the security features that intergrate into the system, I take it that this meant you needed to negate many of them by dummying signals, would that be correct? Any chance of giving us a rundown on some of them as an example? I wish I could figure out why my sound isnt working, seems ok with all the other app's Cheers John Quote
NZeder Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 David got the system working without bypassing any of the security features. Basically the BMW system has a special key with a micro chip inside it. This and the first box David talked about in the video send a signal to all other devices aka the ECU to let them know all is well. If the wrong combo is used the car can still start but it will shut down after 15 seconds - not even a limp mod - just no go. You can swap out any part of the system and if they are not resync'd by BMW you only get the 15 second start/shutdown routine. Quote
Sirpent Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 Thanks Mike, Unfortunately I had no sound on the Youtube clip as I mentioned in my first post after David embedded the link, so I could only make out what was happening visually. Cheers John Quote
jamo240 Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 Well done Dave....who know's what's possible when ze Germans and Japs merge!! Looking forward to seeing it in action. Cheers Grant Quote
KatoKid Posted June 6, 2011 Author Posted June 6, 2011 John. What Mike says is correct, you have to provide the inputs the system requires otherwise its game over. This is the pin out for the EWS module, as you can some inputs from the body module, central locking and engine speed are not required but the everything else is a must have and cannot be replicated with a dummy signal as they are integral with sending code to and from the components (key, transmit/receive, EWS and ECU). Aliangus Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 Great to see this car in the flesh yesterday, obviously a huge amount of thought and research going into this build, and it will be an awesome car once it's complete. Quote
KatoKid Posted August 4, 2011 Author Posted August 4, 2011 Cant believe its been nearly two months since my last build thread post! Ive been lacking a bit of motivation, primarily because I'm just so relieved that the engine runs and seems to be in good nick but I need to get back into it. Got my rotisserie back from Jamo so I'm all fired up to get the last of the bodywork done before I send it off to the blasters. I haven't been doing absolutely nothing......a few weeks ago I had a member from the ECCA forum come over with his Peake scan tool to run a diagnostic check on my engine, more out of curiosity than anything else but it also had a very slight stumble just as you cracked the throttle off idle. As expected lots of codes came up but after clearing and rerunning only 2 of any consequence remained: A2 Synchronisation Cam Sensor OA Output Camshaft Sensor I figured the two codes are related as the ECU needs to know positions of both cams relative to the crank at all times, logic being that if one sensor is crook it will spit that code as well as cause the lack of crank/cam sync. So looks like Ive got a crook cam position sensor...but which one? There is no way of testing the actual sensors without going on the you beaut diagnostic computer at a dealer so I was looking at replacing both sensors. Took a month (they were ex the fatherland) but Pelican Parts (US based BMW specialist) came through with 2 x genuine BMW cam position sensors @ $97.00 each plus freight, to my door was $220 vs $800 from the local stealer. Should be a law against that obscene mark up! Fitted them today. What I thought would only take a few minutes took an hour as I had to pull the rocker cover to get access to the Allen head bolt for the inlet sensor and even then it needed a cut down Allen key and a bit of patience to get it done. Deffinitely made a difference as the slight stumble just as you cracked the throttle off idle is gone now. Just need to borrow the scan tool and check the codes again! Quote
Sirpent Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 Hey David, Every time you post I smile, I like many others are travelling alongside you as you progress watching that spec of light at the end of the tunnel get brighter and bigger, don't think you are the only one enjoying your journey. Hopefully by late this month I will be a bit closer behind you. Keep it up buddy. Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted August 4, 2011 Moderators Posted August 4, 2011 Geez, they don't make it easy with those sensors do they? Better than the X-Trail crank angle sensor; between the engine and gearbox with no access until you seperate the two! Like everyone,,can't wait till the chassis / engine are mated! Quote
luvemfast Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 Def the most awaited transplant, in possession, going on at the moment. Let the madness continue............... Quote
Sirpent Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 Def the most awaited transplant, in possession, going on at the moment. Let the madness continue............... ++++++1 ! A V6 is simpler but staying with an L6 alternative of this complexity is art. Quote
KatoKid Posted August 4, 2011 Author Posted August 4, 2011 Thanks guys. Ive got most of the mecahnical components sorted now, still need to recondition eevrything and prep and paint for installation and I will do this while the shell is in panel jail.
