luvemfast Posted March 26, 2012 Author Posted March 26, 2012 no its just a L28 with a big cam lol Yup Wadever Simon, why didn't you just go the SW pipes? I was going to go that way....... Until these popped up Quote
Riceburner Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 They are the same as the 'SW Motorsport' item's... IMO These pipes seem to have a lot better finish, single piece instead of two piece with a flange and these are 'firing order'..... Enough about Simon's pipes, seems a lot of people have been looking at them Should be a beast! Whats the theory behind the megaphone and how do you work out what length is required? Quote
d3c0y Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 no its just a L28 with a big cam lol hehe You made the sticker yet? NISSAN BIG OHC. Quote
luvemfast Posted March 26, 2012 Author Posted March 26, 2012 Whats the theory behind the megaphone and how do you work out what length is required? That's a very good question. I've been doing some reading and about 7-9 degrees is what's recommended. Works out to be 3.2" to 4.1" long. Yet Peter has done some dyno work and found shorter length works better. Or was he just saying he found that his short length, did the job? What were we talking about again? Quote
Riceburner Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 You made the sticker yet? NISSAN BIG OHC. That would be cool. Lol. So does it reduce in size or expand... would you use it to step up from the 2.5" secondaries to a 3" system? Quote
peter mc Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 i found that it helps the mid range if you reduce the pipe at the merge colecter down to 2.1/4 and then rip it up to 3in as fast as i can , 40mm or so i will take a pic tomorrow so you can see it Quote
luvemfast Posted March 26, 2012 Author Posted March 26, 2012 Here's a cool little explanation. http://wikiscootia.wikidot.com/expansion-chamber But, it is a bit of a guessing game too! http://www.k20a.org/forum/showthread.php?t=82202 Interesting stuff. Think I'll just go with Peters recommendation Quote
zedevan Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 They are the same as the 'SW Motorsport' item's... Are you sure? They are a 2 piece system from memory aren't the SW motorsport ones 6:2:1 or 6:1? these look like 6:3:1's, which I have a damaged pair of sitting here, so i need to either get them fixed or would love to grab a pair of these if he's able to make more as you're asking Quote
peter mc Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 yep there very different pipes , the pipe SW makes is 6/2/1 , so these pipes might be very different in the tune Simon i think you best ask peter hall what they like , he is a very nice bloke give him a call Quote
C.A.R. Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 Meh, I couldn't deduce that from the photo. The primary design looks the same to me... Quote
zedevan Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 The primary design looks the same to me... pipes that go from the engine down to meet up with the rest of the exhaust? Simon, I dont think you should risk the loss of top end performance, and instead sell these to me... Quote
luvemfast Posted March 27, 2012 Author Posted March 27, 2012 Forget the link I posted earlier about the expansion chamber. That's a different technology........ And a bit of a black art. Bu still, interesting stuff non the less. I called Peter Hall and had a chat today. This exhaust was a bit of a prototype, too large for the Tarmac rally engine it was bolted to. The principle of the firing order is stolen from the saloon racers. Apparently they swear by them. But for me, it's a case of suck it and see. I currently have the intake and exhaust off the car. And you guessed it........ There is a problem. These headers were made for the longer Cannon or Redline manifolds. My TWM fouls in a few spots. So I need to remove some material. No biggy but I adds to time off the road and I'm getting antsy. Oh. And I've ordered my K & N cone air filter today too. So getting everyhing sorted Quote
peter mc Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 hi simon this is what i do for the pipes to fix the 3500 torque dip ... this ones my dyno pipe so its a bit ruff ,i built 4 difrent pipes to find the fix Quote
luvemfast Posted March 27, 2012 Author Posted March 27, 2012 Exactly what I was planning to do Peter Will pm you Quote
peter mc Posted March 28, 2012 Posted March 28, 2012 hehe you dont have to i have made your one Quote
luvemfast Posted March 29, 2012 Author Posted March 29, 2012 Making enquiries on a new 3" exhaust. Had one guy who thought that 3" would be too large and running a cannon and hotdog would be too loud.......... Quote
peter mc Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 Simon you need to run a magnaflo rear muffler to make it work or it will be very loud. , give me a call i will talk you thro it , the 3in is 12hp on your motor over a 2.5 in Quote
luvemfast Posted March 29, 2012 Author Posted March 29, 2012 The S/S Cannon I've got, has a removable and adjustable silencer. I modified my intake manifold linkage tonight. Had to add support to the throttle shaft, as it had some flex from too long a length after a support. I also have removed material from the intake manifold where it was hitting the headers. Thinking that since its so close, I should get the headers ceramic coated. Quote
peter mc Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 thats not for you mate its for a turbo setup it will be so noisy and if you adjust it to make it quiet it will kill power Quote
luvemfast Posted March 29, 2012 Author Posted March 29, 2012 thats not for you mate its for a turbo setup it will be so noisy and if you adjust it to make it quiet it will kill power Crap! Really? I thought a straight through muffler, is a straight through muffler? Any particular size or type I should be looking into? This is my plan. Can revise. Headers, cone out from 2.5" - 3", 3" mandrel bent system, hot dog, 3" system to 3" inlet muffler. Any particular hot dog and muffler design? Quote
luvemfast Posted April 23, 2012 Author Posted April 23, 2012 Well, in the end.... I decided to fit the headers and connect it to my old 2.5" system for now. See if I'm happy with them before I spend any more $$$'s While I was at it, I replaced the rear springs that Iain (imackz) gave me, as he upgraded his. I'm not opposed to hand me downs The car now sits nicer and feels a bit firmer in the rear. Which is what I was after. It bogged down way too much under acceleration. Which creates toe out, which creates under steer. Hopefully this eliminates those problems. Back to the exhaust. I put everything back on and fired her up. Sounded VERY different. Ran out of time for a test drive, took close to a week before I took it into work. It ran average at best. Halfway I was thinking. "Jeez its a bit fumey, must have an exhaust leak". When I got to work, popped the bonnet and found the engine bay COVERED in oil It seems that the 710 cap had come off and allowed oil to come out of the filler hole. Not happy. Put a bung in it and drove it home to diagnose the problem. Not to mention it drove like a piece o'crap! Just ask Biggels, I saw him on the way home. After checking lots of potential problems, I noticed that there was no burnt oil on cyl 5 exhaust..... Not only that, but the exhaust paint hadn't baked on......... Dead spark plug. It was then that I looked at my coil, Bosch GT40R. Resistor type! Dang, that's not helping me out. Changed plugs and put the stock coil back on. Fired her up. BANG (good bang ) Runs better than ever Now I'm investigating getting an ignition module, MSD type or cheaper Streetfire? Undecided. I'm after improved performance and a rev limiter, with best bang for buck. Quote
MaygZ Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 I'm after...... a rev limiter, ...... Put a block of wood under the go peddle and tighten the nut behind the wheel - you bloody hoon Quote
