Well, I've just purchased a multi spark ignition box from EvilBay. It's a Summit racing brand made by Mallory, with similar spec to the MSD 6AL. Got it for $100, which I think is pretty good.

Here's a link http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-850606/

I've been reading that these usually don't cooperate with stock tacho's. What is the problem and how do I get around it?

They also recommend that I use a high output coil.

This one http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-850505/

What plugs and leads would peeps recommend that. Use to go with this system?

Thoughts?

You'll need 10mm 'helically wound' leads otherwise you get huge emf all through the engine bay. I sourced mine from IC&E in moorabbin. Seems like a good price on that coil, good output too. It's nice to buy from aus but we always pay two or three times as much for the same product  ::)

The stock issues relate to the older inductive loop setup that 240z and 260z have. Given your zed is a S130 and was fitted with EFI from the get go it might have a negative side coil triggered tach, I can't recall......I might have to look at wiring diagram to confirm....will edit this post once I check the S130 service manual I have here.

EDIT: Ok checked the wiring diagram. The S130 does have a modern style negative side of the coil tacho setup (aka non inductive loop). So it should work fine. The wire is blue (L) from the negative side of the coil to the resistor then it goes from that as a (LgW) light Green with White?? or does that mean Blue with a light green and white tracer??

Thanks Mike, that gives me some hope.  :D

I created another long winded video on playing with the carbs.  ::)

You can just fast forward closer to the end for some engine running and driving. Believe me though, this is heavily edited, so imagine how bad it could have been!

Nice video Simon. You say it feels like it is missing during crusing before the cam smoothens out.  Is this normal from the long duration cam? Is it running lean when it does that?

Posted

Was the best way to describe it.

Took my neighbour for a drive, he has a Mustang Mach 1 with a VERY lumpy cam. He thought it felt typical of biggish cams.

Also, I'm working on spark at the moment which should help.

Did you watch the whole thing? There's a quote in there that I couldn't edit out. For those who know me.

"Was I going somewhere with that? Even I get bored of my stories........ How depressing!"

Lol  ;D

Yeah, i did.  Definitely the longest video i have sat through on youtube ;D  Couldn't have been too boring.

I like your AFM sensor.  I may get one too once car is driving again.  You should write a tutorial......

But I don't have one? ???

Looking at doing a tutorial on Multi spark Ignition box

Is that a baby monitor????

Were you changing jets while on parent duty........ we've all been there ;)

Opps I just watched the start and you mention the monitor. I just scrolled to the end like you said to do in your post.

So after last weekends cruise, I've decided to get the front discs machined. Due to a vibration under braking, which I clearly didn't like. Apart from that though, it ran awesomely  ;D

It was actually the longest drive I'd ever taken it on.

So tonight, for something new. My car is up on jacks, wheels removed  ::) seriously spends more time like this than it should.

While I was out there, I decided to fit the shift light. Haven't tested it yet as its midnight and I don't think the neighbours (or wife) would appreciate it.

Good news is that I have received my multi spark CDI Box. But can't fit it until I receive the coil and leads.

Question.

There are many different methods and options to hook up the ignition box, depending on car manufacturer. Instructions are mainly US cars.

Anyone got experience in installing and pointers for me?

What CDI box did you get in the end? MSD, Crane, Mallory etc? I too have recently received something for sparks from the land of the rising sun ;)

Just follow the instructions and hook the wires up. Having a ZX will make it even easier as you dont need to do something to make the tacho work. I dont see the point in doing a write up either, its seriously.

Mike, I have the Summit Racing branded box, which is made under licens by Mallory. Same specs, just different looking box. Also have the matching coil (also Summit, made by Mallory) and leads coming.

I've also, finally, hooked up the cold air intake. Seems to work well.

The hard part was connecting the TWM air box to the 3" pipe. Ended up getting a connector from the wreckers. Ford AU XR8  ;)

I ordered 2 K&N cone filters as much of the cost was in shipping.

So I have 1 brand new unit for sale. RE-810 3" inlet x 8" long (I think) $65 takes it.

I was under the car looking at the diff.

Can I get some help here.

I'm getting one of Jakes LSD R180's with a 4.1 ratio.

As I haven't worked on an S30 car for a decade, will it fit to these mounts?

Also opinions on going from R200, to an R180?

Its smaller and lighter. But don't want to break it  :-\

I've read that some racing guys prefer them. They find them strong enough and like the 10kg+ weight saving.

Plus, I think a 4.1 ratio would be better suited for my usage.

You will need to modify the moustache bar as the R180 rear cover isn't as deep as on a R200.  In 240Z's and 260Z's you just run a 240Z moustache bar for an R180 or a 260Z moustache bar for an R200.  Not sure if a 240Z moustache bar fits a 280ZX???  The front mount should be fine.

I've run 266rwkw through a welded R180 on 255 semi-slicks with no issues.  An LSD won't be quite as strong as a welded diff but I don't think you'll have any issues with it.

As Shane said, the r180 will be fine. If you break it you either have way too much horsepower or are abusing it badly.

The old 240 only ever used CIG R180's and coped with 200rwhp, 212 ft/lb of torque and standing starts with sidestepping the clutch at 3500rpm.

I don't understand why everyone wants to go to R200 in what most would consider mild applications, I can understand those with V8's going to the R200, but with an L series why bother???

Thanks gents.  ;)

Was exactly what I wanted to hear.

I'll just have to mod the rear mount and that should make it a bolt in job  :)

Now, for the halfshafts...........

This was my other option. R200 locker!

Might be for sale soon then.

those lockers are illegal on the a road car here in NZ so not sure about AU.

re the diff - The 2000cc version have R180 setups so you can get parts from them....well here in NZ we can as about 60%+ of the ZX imported from Japan into NZ were the L20E power versions.

Plenty of Aus delivered 280ZXs came with R180s just grab the rear end setup out of one of those. Should be cheap as!
