I've decided that dyno tuning is stressful for newbies!

A base tune run was done first. The car ran like complete crap! Hesitating and missing. Not even going over 3,000rpm.

Let me rewind a bit hjjfhjggvjigbitrewqfhkkjkh

 

It's been a busy week preparing for next weeks Nats. I've been out in the garage most nights till after midnight, even getting up before 5am to start work early so I can get some machining done. Concentrating on some front suspension mods.

Dads been helping out too, as well as working on his red ZX. Which I've made suspension goodies for too.

Since dad is retired, I figured its easier for him to do some of the running around. Like getting the Summit Racing ignition installed by an auto elec.

And getting the suspension alignment done. Which took 2 attempts to get right due to some interference/rubbing of parts. The RCA's were ousting the LCA's down too far and the ball joints could touch the rotors. The caster could also touch the front spoiler and inner guard. Smaller front tyres were needed in the end. But it's all good 

 

Fast forward back to the dyno...........

Why is it hesitating and driving like crap? Don't know

Did it do it before? No

What was the last mod done to car? Summit ignition box!

Since it was taken to an auto elec and I've not driven it since, had no real idea about it.

The timing was checked. Too advanced. Lets retard it. Problem is. I already did all the way, as it was pinging in my garage before tune.

Check wiring. Non shielded wires used from dizzy, to CDI box in footwell. Lou asked what I wanted to do? So we decided it went well before. Lets remove it all and go back to how it was. Timing was reset to where it should be. Happy days.

Tappets were adjusted and cam dialed in.

Time for some runs on the dyno.

It was noticed that at higher RPM's, we were running out of fuel. Base setting was 4.5psi. While driving hard, it dropped to 1.5psi 

A higher volume pump was gerry rigged and away we went again.

 

 

Above is a link to a 6,000rpm run, which gave a nice, smooth curve to make 143kW.

Higher revs needs a 3" exhaust, it's struggling to get rid of the gasses. This will be done in the future.

Mikuni jetting is notice different to what I had in. Airs went down from 210 to 180.

A new pump was installed tonight. BUT MAN IS IT NOISEY!!!!

 

It's now mechanically ready for the Nats. Just needs to be made pretty!

Fun and games. The summit ignition is a OEM version of a Mallory 6AL if I recall correctly (in think that is IIRC)

 

Out of interest what is the noisy fuel pump brand so others can avoid it or give their feedback if they have one.

Smack on with the Summit/Mallory ign box. Have matching coil also.

The fuel pump was just an electric unit that came with the carbs from the states. Lou thinks its just a Bluebird unit 

I totally underestimated what happens to EVERTHING on the dyno.

It now has a Holley style pump, which is super noisy. Even though I mounted the bracket on rubbers, then pump to bracket on rubber.

But doesn't matter, it's a toy!

With non sheilded cable you'll be getting a heap of EMF. MSD also say to run the dizzy trigger wires separate from the coil wires to further reduce the risk of EMF pickup. That's even with the shielded dizzy cables.

 

You've done a huge amount of work in a short time, great job. 143kw is awesome for a base tune

After  I change a few things. I'll get it tuned again. More timing. More RPM's.

Great work Simon, you can rest easy now, maybe even a good nights sleep. Question, have you sprinted at the Island before?  With all that new power, have you thought about what you are going to do when you arrive at turn One doing the fastest speed you have ever done before in the 280zx. Mate, you are going to love it.

To be honest Gordo, I've avoided PI until now.

I've been concerned that my car wasn't fast enough and able to give me the satisfaction, that Australia's best track deserves. Plus, been a bit scared of it! Lol

But I'm super pumped about it.

 

And for the record, turn one, I'll be on the brakes!

After everyone carried on about Carter 4070s being loud i couldn't even hear it over my motor, bet that wont have pressure issues and it was cheap if the you need to upgrade from the Holley.

I drove it in to work yesterday.

After starting it and driving out the driveway..... I really didn't notice the fuel pump noise at all.

While polishing and waxing the car, getting it ready & making it look pretty for the nationals. I find it easier to work on the car by driving it up on to some timber blocks, lifting it up to a nicer height for +6 footers.

Everything was going well, even though it got polished a few months ago. It was coming up nicely, but couldn't be bothered cutting.

Thought I'd drive it off the blocks and have a feel of the clutch, since I'd adjusted it. As I reversed off the blocks, there was a big bang. It's pretty normal have some noise of the blocks slapping on the ground. But this one seemed noisier than normal................

Wasn't till after that we saw THIS!!!!!!!!!  :'(  :'(  :'(

With you around apparently he's not . I hate it when I do stuff like this, it irks me. Hopefully it will all be sorted by the old man and looking good for the Nationals.

Here is my fastest lap for the day. Many areas of my driving that needs improving to drop my times. But happy with my first outing at the Moto GP track.

This track seriously blew my mind today and cannot be compared to the others I've driven!

Familiarization session had me scared out of my tiny mind. But by the 3rd session, was pushing the boundaries to go faster and faster. 4 wheel drifting at 160kph plus!

My lines not the best. But I had an absolute blast.

If it weighs under a couple of hundred grams, it's ok to use a suction cup mount.

It's one from eBay for my iphone4, that I modified to fit the 5. Just extended it 9mm's.

For me.

Driving on a track and water skiing, I have similar principles.

If I don't come off, I'm not trying hard enough!
