imackz Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Here are some pics of the latest mods. The new strut brace fitted, with obligatory engine bay pic And the gold rims, fitted. Pretty happy with them now Rims came out nice Simon, good stuff. :-) Quote
luvemfast Posted October 3, 2012 Author Posted October 3, 2012 Nice wheels. I love the engine bay, black ignition leads would make it look a bit cleaner I think. When I get the ignition box and new coil fitted, I also have helical wound leads to suit........ that are black! I might be the odd one out not liking the gold wheels I'm with Agno sorry Simon. It's all good, everyones got different opinions. I may get tired of them and change again? I've still got the Watanabe's The main reason was to have some sort of definition on the car. As from a distance, on the track, it just looks like a black blob approaching. But at DECA on the weekend, it looked great in the distance. Gordo emailed me a video of me on the skidpan, will edit it with some other vids and youtube it when I get a chance. Those who are on Facebook, would have seen one already by now Quote
MaygZ Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 Looking good there mate. She's got plenty of poke. Good work, justin, sheldon .. whatever your name is Quote
saxon Posted October 24, 2012 Posted October 24, 2012 Hey Simon, go to google images and search "triple mikuni" then scroll down a little bit. Quote

luvemfast Posted October 24, 2012 Author Posted October 24, 2012 Hey Simon, go to google images and search "triple mikuni" then scroll down a little bit. Classic With a Google search, I've got 3 of the top 10 triple Mikuni videos on YouTube And clearly more boresome vid's to come Quote
luvemfast Posted November 9, 2012 Author Posted November 9, 2012 Was good to get back out in the garage tonight with dad. Wife's had me busy the last few months I've been hanging to swap alternators after the DECA debarcle of no charge. Therefore, flat battery. Don't even need to pull the old alt apart to see what the problem was. It sounds like maracas when you shake it. Which isn't good. Luckily, I had 3 spares to choose from in the parts bin. The largest one was chosen and found to be a 70 amp output. Don't know what it's from, but branded Nissan and bolts straight in. Just needed to change some connector ends and voila. Reconnect power and no smoke, that's always a good thing. Must be wired correctly then. I've only got a dodgy multimeter, which gave me 15V @ idle. Then 16V+ when revved. (underun pulley) This seems too high to me. But will double check next week with a better multimeter. Now all it needs is s clean up and it's ready for the Xmas BBQ Quote
luvemfast Posted November 11, 2012 Author Posted November 11, 2012 Here is a pic of the new alternator. It's quite a bit larger in diameter than the stock one. But a good alternaltive as it's a bolt in job, just mod some wiring. Have no idea what its come from though. For future reference for others. Anyone recognise what it is from? Quote
NZeder Posted November 12, 2012 Posted November 12, 2012 Have you had an RB in the shed at some point? That larger alternator looks like an RB item - but maybe some just swapped over the serpentine belt drive for a V-Belt pulley on the front? But it could also be a Z Series engine aka NAPZ engine from a D21 or like. Quote

But it could also be a Z Series engine aka NAPZ engine from a D21 or like. Got no idea Mike. A lot of my parts are from when Neil Cartledge was emtying his garage I checked the voltage over the weekend while running. I'm running an ATI balancer and @ idle its only putting out 12.5V. It doesn't come up to 14.5V until its reved a bit higher. Is this normal for an underun pulley? Do I need to make a smaller diameter V-belt pulley for the alternator? I thought I'd grease the front end yesterday, while I had it up on ramps. My old grease gun wasn't getting grease passed the nipples, so I bought a new flexible connector for the gun. i thought it was weird that it didn't have any adjustment on the tip, but didn't think anything of it as it went on easily. Then tried to remove it from the nipple........... wouldn't come off. So I pulled and twisted a bit harder until it came off. Only the nipple was still in the tip Not happy Jan! Quote
dat2kman Posted November 18, 2012 Posted November 18, 2012 You need a screwable nipple tippy tit thingy type thing end on the grease gun flex stalk. That eay when you squeeze the handle, and it gets up pressure, 'cos your nipple wont flow, you then grip the end bit thingy screwy knurled round thing with a pair of multi grips, which by the way, you should have had slid into your back pocket, just in case this very scenario happens, and just unscrewed it a bit, released pressure, and released the nipple grippage going on. Re alternator pulleys usually higher rev rally or race run the larger underdriven, and yeaps the alt light will be on at idle to about sub 2000 rpm, then it makes the charges go zapity zap into the battery. ( i'm in a cunny funt mood today ! ) Still cant see sh1t but. Quote
PZG302 Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 What Jason said about the alternator. Run the underdriven pulley and it will serve you well, go back to a noormal pulley and you will be frying alternators nearly every event. And like Jason I'n bored today as well....... At least nothing to clean up from the storm. Quote

Riiight. By the way, I have found that when we want to get the gun of the nipple we pull it, right. It is better if you push it into the nipple to allow the pressure to release a little. If that isn't working, release the bleed value on the gun. This can get a little messy if you are doing a few, but better than helicoiling a grease nipple. Sheldon, do you really need an under-run pulley? Wouldn't the standard size work better. The voltage regulator (internal or external) should prevent over charging. I mean that's what it is there fore. :-\ If it fries alternators, then maybe worth running an external one. With the electrics that the fat, ugly cars run, your battery won't last long at idle (warm-up, waiting to get onto the track, going down the shops, cruising the streets checking on your girls to make sure they're working - headlights on, wipers operating - 'cause you don't want to have to get out in the rain. Imagine your loss of street 'cred' if the other pimps see you getting your girls to push you car home. Then you wouldn't be cooler than me!) Quote
luvemfast Posted November 19, 2012 Author Posted November 19, 2012 So now, you're calling me a Teen idol, theoretical physicist, pimp, now pusher? I'm agree about getting the Volts up at low revs though. The underrun pulley is also for the water pump. So I may just turn up a smaller diameter pulley for the alternator. Quote

I would never call you a pusher! You are the opposite of a pusher. You're a ....... PS: for the record I never called you any of those things. I suggested that you were young (like Justin), your KIDS call you Sheldon!, you drive a car that came out of the factory lined with a pimps suit. Quote
PZG302 Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 I found that with a standard pulley on the alternator that the alternator would destroy itself because you are running for a fair length of time at a lot of revs. Centrifugal forcce is a wonderful thing. I never had issues with running out of battery at events once I got the alternator sorted and for driving on the road, how much time do you spend at idle? As long as you are punting around at about 2.5k rpm or more the alternator should be charging so no issues and no replacing alternators all the time. Quote
luvemfast Posted November 19, 2012 Author Posted November 19, 2012 Even if it's not just a track car? Yes, it goes to the track. But maybe once or twice a year. More often a weekend warrior. So should it be a concern? Maybe have a quick change pulley the has both diameters on it. You just flip it around. Lol Quote
peter mc Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 REV IT harder you girl lol don't let it idle for that long tern it off till you need to race keep it over 2k and no prob Quote
Riceburner Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 What sort of size difference are we talking between the standard and race type underdriven alt pulley? Could machine your own and go halfway between the two? A streetable size that will live longer on the track perhaps Quote
luvemfast Posted November 19, 2012 Author Posted November 19, 2012 That's a good compromise Gareth. Peter........... You're a knob Quote
Riceburner Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 I just run the stock size, It's only been rebuilt once since I've been racing and it was secondhand when I first fitted it. He's kinda right though sheldon Quote
peter mc Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 we get about 2 laps at the island with a stock one Gareth if you rpm them to 7000+ after that there smashed , and if you rpm to 8+ for any length of time lol they fly apart so the under drive is the only way to go , shore if you don't rpm them there is know need for one btw there worth 6hp over a stock size balancer Quote
Riceburner Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 6HP thanks Pete! Simon, If you decide to machine any I'd be in for one too! Lol. Quote
d3c0y Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 I've got an ATi on mine and it's the biggest under drive you can get! MTFU! Quote
luvemfast Posted December 2, 2012 Author Posted December 2, 2012 Took the black beast to the Xmas BBQ at Gordo's. The wife had my eldest for a dance concert, so I had my 2 year old for her fisrt ride. Annnd she loved it! Was another beautiful day and thanks again to Gordo and with lovely family for having us all. Quote
