If it's a 71 I'd be interested in knowing what chassis number it is.

Posted

It's probably worth about that in it's current shape.

An early 240z sub-1000 chassis range is becoming very rare, especially RHD. I honestly don't think $1,000 - $2,000 makes a huge difference when buying such a vehicle because it's going to need more than that put into it.

The vinyl could be hiding rust, but so could a fresh paint job. It looks like the car is mostly complete which is a huge positive. There not getting any cheaper.

To be honest, the vinyl isn't such a terrible thing. It does breath slightly allowing moisture to escape however if it has been on there for a long time and the paintwork isn't fantastic underneath it will pull off a large amount of paint. Could be seen as a good thing to some, annoying to others.

1970 Datsun 240Z Coupe (HS30-00836) + 9/73 240Z

$5,500

"I have for sale 2 x Datsun 240z shells, one is a 1973, the other is a 1970 Vin number HS-30-00836. Early numbers like this are getting very hard to find and highly sought after by Z fans.

My original plan was to build one 240z out of the 2 shells. The early numbered shell is very rusty but with some usable panels including the roof and inner quarter panels, fire wall with numbers etc.

The 73 has some rust but an easy project for the right person. I would prefer to sell both shells to the same purchaser as this will be the best option for getting one of these classic cars back on the road."

There is no mention of other parts, not shown in the photos - eg. engines, transmissions, seats etc..

If I had more money I would consider getting these two, I couldn't justify ripping apart the 73" though. I did see a freshly written off 240 at the Z shop a few months back (White, was at Melbourne Datsun Day) which would be nice too ;)

Although it might not actually be a write off, I've seen the front sections grafted onto the z's (Is that actually legal/worth it?)

Money. Pure and simple. 90% of the quality for 50% of the cost.

Sure, bare metal may be the ultimate way to restore it, but only the owner of the car can decide if the extra money is worthwhile to them when a good paintjob over a sound existing finish can look just as good for less money.

1973 Datsun 240Z. $40k

https://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Datsun-240Z-1973/SSE-AD-3914533

This 240z was fully restored around 2008 and modified to suit the occasional tarmac ralley , hillclimb or track day. It has a 2.8 litre L series engine taken out to 3.0 litre and still running standard looking inlet and ex manifolds and carbies. Standard distributer and other accessories but heavily modified internals producing 149 rear wheel kilowatts. It has a custom built bolt in bolt out roll cage and a cams log book. It uses standard configuraton brakes with upgraded compounds, koni adjustable shocks , and custom springs. the gearbox is a rebuilt later model unit and the diff an original 240 type, the clutch is a semi competition type with a lightened moly flywheel, the combination works well and the car has been driven to every event and home again and never needed a trailer . All modifications are tastefully done and are able to be taken back to standard easily, with the car comes the original standard bore matching numbers 2.4 litre motor. The car has been garaged for about the last 5 years with very little use and probably needs to go to someone that will use it a bit more.

It's lived in Alice all it's life and I will be the 3rd owner, they are going to bring the car across to me for a fee but I'm happy with the total cost.

Need to have a think about where I want to go with the engine.

If that's the case I can't imagine it has much rust if any... Should be a good car and a good price if it's rust free also.

He did mention there was a few sections cut out and replaced prior to if being prepped so I presume it was kept outside for a period of time but been garaged for the last 11 years of his ownership.

He also gave me the VIN but I have all the details of our conversation typed down at home which I'll update soon.

The car is going to be assembled and the windows put in for transportation.

Nice work, I contacted the owner also and was told that they were in negotiations with a buyer and would let me know if the sale fell through. Not that I really needed another one ;D ;D ;D

Hopefully its as good as they say it is. Post up some pictures once you have it

Will do.

I was worried I cut in on another member on here because apparently there was another buyer ready to transfer some cash this morning but the seller said first come first serve.

I offered the seller a bit more cash and said I could transfer the cash instantly and he agreed.

Sorry if you're on here.

Because non fluted is 100x better looking.;) Hard to say could be accident damage or rust need to see it in person.

"Looking to clear out the shed, selling my old daily drive it's been sitting in the shed for about 15 years since I parked it there. It gets a run most weekends and goes great, brakes get a bit sticky, she's got some rust and it's not in show room condition the paints three shades of gold! My brother is a spray painter and I could cover up the rust and cracked paint but that's not fair on anyone that buys it.

It's got twin su carbs, extractors and a bigger cam she was a rocket back in the day

The interior needs carpet and a possum had a bit of a chew on the passenger set but there is sheep skin seat covers (see pics)

I have to many projects on the go and I will restore the old girl if it doesn't sell but if someone else can use it I'm easy

if you want more pics let me know "

I have 1 on my 72 240z, which I would swap for a non-fluted bonnet in the same shape (straight and rust free). However I believe member RetroZ has first refusal and I can't swap until I'm ready to repaint the replacement either red to match the rest of the car or flat black for the Works Rally Car period look ;).

If I can't find a good non-fluted bonnet I plan to cut out the flutes and weld in replacement sheet metal to make it non-fluted.

If you want vents you can vent the inspection lids on either side of the bonnet instead, which looks nicer in my opinion (very Toyota 2000GT) and can be changed out if the owner changes their mind about them later.

The flutes make the bonnet look shorter and changes the proportions of the car. I much prefer the clean look without them!
