Doesn't surprise me, it looked like good buying.

Yes we know the car and now the reserve ;).

I certainly hope it wasn't washed in direct sunlight, first rule of washing cars. Do it in the shade :).

38000...... Lol. Gotta say that's ambitious for a 2 + 2!

It's a pretty unique 2+2.. is it really that ambitious?

Granted Jen doesn't seem like someone you could be friends with, this car is still a slice of the Z history..

I would think for the right buyer $35k could be achievable when you weigh up restoration costs and the fact that it is very original and documented low miles. Of course I've not seen it in person to determine paint condition or evidence of rust (it's a Datsun after all).

Also if someone was to take the long game view a mint 2+2 that is unrestored could be a good investment over a 10 year period.

Recall that a literally 0 mile 280z 2+2 sold for 50k USD + not long ago. It takes 2 to drive up an auction after all.

Of course in my opinion the seller hasn't helped their cause much either.

As a unique 2+2 it will need a "unique" buyer who is a collector and probably will not drive it - so probably not someone on eBay or Gumtree (or internet forums). As previously suggested Shannons may be the best bet - but the new owner is not in a hurry to sell.

Considering this 2+2 sold for $26,000 at a shannons auction I think $38,000 is quite over priced

https://www.shannons.com.au/auctions/2017-shannons-sydney-summer-classic-auction-rare-number-plates/LAD9UEE6C7BAPC12/

Linton's old car whilst very nice was quite different.

First of all it has a lot of non OEM parts on it, for example steering wheel, gear knob, radio, radiator etc.. which can all be easily remedied but does detract from it's appeal to a collector who wants an original example.

The carburetors are also not the original and much maligned Hitachi Flat Top's with all the original emissions gear that goes with.

Also the Shannon's auction mentioned rust, I'm not sure where because I've never looked under the car (last I saw it was 2004-ish) and whilst it's been maintained well and loved it's a bit different to the time capsule unearthed in a Benalla shed.

The difference with the Benalla car for me and why it appeals to someone like me is:

1. It's a relatively early 2+2.

2. It has the steel wheels and caps (before the common 260z alloys came into play) - which is very rare to find on any S30Z in Australia let alone a 2+2.

3. The colour, it really looks superb in my opinion. Much prefer it to the later lighter blue. That's just personal preference though!

4. Interior almost looks new.

5. Being kept inland and in a barn all this time there is a good chance there is very little if any rust in the Benalla car.

6. A car is only original once for a specific collector and this car still has nearly all the parts it left the factory with. When certain parts have date stamps, and markings that indicate year of manufacture it's nice to have parts on a car that are supposed to be there. I know it's a small thing, but to certain collectors it shouldn't be overlooked.

I could go on, and I'm not here to pump the price on the Blue 2+2 just offer a devil's advocate view as to why comparing 2 different cars is not always apples vs apples. In fact in general this is why I think each car (like Real Estate) needs an independent appraisal to really get an accurate sense of it's worth. Since often no 2 cars are exactly the same and as compelling to the same group or type of buyer.

Here is the 2+2 that sold for $49k USD.

Of course buying any car at a potential inflated price and hoping to cash out in a few years could be troublesome if you're just an "investor" and not an "enthusiast" the term "white elephant" comes to mind.  :)

Hi

2+2 for $38K is it overpriced - maybe it is, maybe not.

The interesting thing is that only a couple of years back a 2+2 for $20K would have seemed way overpriced.

Seen this happen before in the 80's when someone first advertised a XY GT for more than $100K. I am not saying that a Z (especially a 2+2) is worth anything like the XYGT, just that someone has to start it.

Personally I believe that 3-5 years any registered & roadworthy Z will be easily $25K - $30K, with 2 seaters much much more.

Just my opion.

And I thought paying $7000 back in 1996 for a 77 model 260Z 2 seater was a lot!

Wish I still had that one :)

Yes, I suspect we all a few cars that maybe we should kept.

For me the the stand outs would be

- HJ Premier Wagon 308 TH400 Disc rear

- VL Calias Turbo with sunroof

- LH Torana 308 4 Speed

Cheers

Some great old cars on that list Pete.

I always liked the Toranas.

The LJ is one I would like to own but never have along with the LX. A SS version especially.

My first car when I got my license was a humble 4 cylinder HB Torana ^-^

Does anyone know the history of this car. I'm thinking of making an offer.

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/192110165737

This was bought from Port Augusta for ~$9k not that long ago and I don't think he has done any work. The previous seller said he got the car as part of a lot a few years ago and had been in storage mostly since then.

I was keen at $9k but less now - good luck
