1977 Datsun 260Z with RB30 (2 Seater)

Just a heads up this 260Z will likely be listed on Gumtree or CarSales in the next week or so and I thought I would give the forum members a heads up.

The sale fell through with the initial buyer and as I had made a few enquiries prior, I was offered it. I went and inspected the 260Z and test drove it. While I really loved it, I chose to go in a different direction.

I asked the seller if I may list it on the forums with his contact details and he was happy for me to do so.

cp5596574878561662240.jpg?aspect=centere

Here are some of the details;

·         1977 260Z with a N/A RB30 from a R31 Skyline

·         RS30015208

·         Original L26 engine included in sale (L26170597)

·         Registered in WA until June 16

·         Interior – good (centre console needs some work, no visible rust on floor pans or in wheel well, carpet needs replacing)

·         Exterior – good (I believe original paint, small amount of rust near rear drivers wheel and a couple dints on roof near driver’s door, otherwise in good condition)

·         Drive – sounds amazing, smooth (for a 40 year old car), lots of fun, does have a rather loud fuel pump (can’t hear once inside)

·         Electrics – could do with a bit of TLC and tidying up

While I’m no expert in Z-cars and only have had the chance to view half a dozen since my brief interest began, this was the best one I have viewed. While not perfect, it is in great condition for what it is and doubt this will last for long.

You may contact Dean on 0438376636 (he requested no further calls with regards to this post beyond 24/04/16 - rather refer to CarSales or Gumtree advertisement)

What other modifications need to be done for an RB30 powered 240Z / 260Z to pass NSW engineering requirements, e.g Rear Disc brakes, Emissions ? Does anybody know of an Engineer within a few hours from Sydney that has experience with RB powered Zs

Posted

From my limited experience when I was looking into purchasing it, the engineer that I called (Victorian) seemed to think there would be no issues with the engine swap as is.

For me, assuming the RB30 is roughly the same weight as a L26, you would not need to change your brakes, seatbelts etc as the momentum that the brakes are trying to stop will be the same if you are going 100km/h in a RB vs a L26 motor.

For the emissions, it will vary dependent on the type of rego. In Vic, the regulations for club rego are different to that of normal rego (ie club rego is less strict).

Bit of an ambiguous answer I know, but try the RMS website for the specifications and regulations. I don't think you would have any issues with such a simple engine swap.

Hi Mate

Have a read through the VSB14 documents - they outlne the engineering guidelines.

You will need to speak to an approved engineer there is a list on the RMS site

http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/documents/business-industry/examiners/vsccs-bulletin-01-licensed-certifiers.pdf

I can't comment as to if any have RB-Z experience, but I did have a quick chat with Mobility Engineering in Hornsby when I was looking at an RB25 powered Z and they seemed to be familiar with that swap.

Cheers

Any body know a good approved engineer in or around melbourne? - by good I mean a more lenient on rules etc? I contacted a couple engineers and some quoted upwards of 3500 for examination and inspection because they have a huge list of tests to go through. they mentioned renting a portion of a track for half a day to do handling and brake tests.

any body else go through this sort of ordeal when getting their car engineered?

Hi george

Obviously some engineers will take you for a bit of a ride $$$$ wise.

But for an engineer to be more lenient on rules would be stupid. They are engineering to make the car safe and upto standards, if you crash and the police and insurance find out the engineer was lenient on you!!! Big trouble, hence the reason for all the tests and often over engineering.

If you where looking for a post saying yea my brothers mate is an engineer and does it from his shed for $1000 you are not going to find it here..

One last rant. This is a 3rd party cars for sale section. Use the search menu or start a new topic somewhere else please

Thankyou ☺

Regs are the same for full rego or club .

If it's modified it will need a VASS and to pass a full RWC .

Sell the RB30 and stick an L-banger back in it. Cheaper and easier option.

my brother and I have seen the rb260z and gone for a test drive. The engine swap is questionable for the price and there were a few too many anomalies particularly in the transmission for us to justify the funds. However, the panels and chassis condition are in pretty damn good condition.

One for all those who have posted a "wanted" ad of recent.

Shouldn't last long.

It does look like great value - but looking at the photos, I am having trouble believing the "Only travelled 14962 km" bit.

Maybe the ad should read only "showing" 14962 km

Yes Peter,

It looks like it might be a 114,00 km car, rather than a 14,000km or 214,000km specimen. But a very nice car at a good price whatever the true mileage is.
