gturner008 Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 As someone who follows BaT a lot (and purchased a 912 a few months ago), pretty much every happy high value car fails to hit reserve. I'm sure it's down to top buyers simply not on the site, combined with the fact they can't easily view the lot. Also, generally, BaT cars tend to be a little cheaper compared with dealers and private adverts. Finally, imho, the cars sold on BaT are often not mint/perfect history etc. They often have 'issues'. I think maybe US buyers with this kind of money, just don't value these kinds of cars and there was a bit of a spike when they were a "new" thing to the market. I think that is fair enough too, as they are very niche cars. We just happen to be be very niche enthusiasts that like them. They aren't (in the foreseeable future) going to have the appeal of the stalwart euro marques like Ferrari, but look how far they have come in being brought out of total obscurity in terms of the US market. gav240z 1 Quote

I would still consider the car unrestored, given that the paint is original (somehow I doubt it hasn't had any "touch ups"*) and the interior etc.. it still has the majority of it's original components with corresponding manufacture ID. *Just reading body language when he was asked about it, I feel there is more to it. But you know what? It must be impossible to find cars like these that haven't had some kind of touch up over the years. So again it's very subjective I think. Quote

Unrestored is a big stretch, I guess it comes down to what people want to believe. It sat idle in 'Earls' barn for how many years? The hydraulics, carbs, fuel lines and electrics would have had work. He's even admitted to rebuilding other drive line items on the car. Restored or refreshed it is, but it makes it no less of a car. *EDIT. I've watched it a few times now, such an awesome sound! d3c0y Posted May 10, 2017 Author Posted May 10, 2017 I'm surprised too, however you cast your mind back to when Alex's (Edward Lees) red Fairlady Z sold for $35k, that really kicked this whole thing off for zeds in Australia. I think auction prices tend to be a bit over the top and people like to make a statement with "record prices" so I don't feel it's an apples vs apples with private sales. Let's be honest the early 80s was the end of anything worth being considered a classic and the Rx7 was the last of the good batch for Japan. Who knows though, maybe we are going to be paying $50k for MA70 supras and Z31s in the future? Quote

I certainly see a lot of 90s cars becoming cult classics. Silvias, Supras, Skylines, rx7s, wrx's, evos etc.. They are all very popular even now, no reason in 30 years they won't bring mega money to my mind. Especially in original shape as so many have been modified extensively. d3c0y 1 Quote

I went and saw these in person and there is absolutely no way any of these cars justified their final selling prices. They were in good condition but nowhere near what I would call immaculate. On top of that I heard somewhere the series 1 was advertised for a while privately for $27k so I bet the owner is feeling pretty good about himself. Quote
