WogsRus Posted December 15, 2014 Posted December 15, 2014 Well it has been 5 years search but finally i found my zed. Ok so its not al original but more on that later. Is a two owner 1976 2+2 with an ex Targa race prepped L28 with early E88 head and a cam. It use to run triples but has stock SUs on it. The car has been resprayed after a restoration and is immaculate for age. I have been through the whole car and its just superb. I know it has the wrong bonnet but hay, so be it. It goes like scalded cat and over all supper happy seeing as i paid what i believe to be a bargain price. I have been over and under the car and it has no rust issues, original pristine floors and rails, guards etc, even the original rubber mat near the filler cap. Even has original books and tools. So anyhow, just saying hi and i am back. So now the Z will join the ranks of my little 120y coupe in the garage. Quote
oldmates260z Posted December 15, 2014 Posted December 15, 2014 Congratulations looks like a very tidy looking original Zed. Very long and determined Zed hunter. Did not see this one pop up anywhere before. A local Tassie car? Quote
Moderators PB260Z Posted December 15, 2014 Moderators Posted December 15, 2014 Well done, a very nice looking Z. Congratulations. Quote
Yo-Yo Posted December 15, 2014 Posted December 15, 2014 congrats mate, I love the colour & interior combo! Quote
WogsRus Posted December 15, 2014 Author Posted December 15, 2014 all things com to those who wait. Its a local call which was stored for a long time before resto and has not been driven much at all, odo log books indicate 38K on body. I have a matching single owner 120y coupe which is sooo nice to drive as a daily Quote
peter t Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 Good work m8, another green one like mine. Welcome. Quote
Scoota G Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 Well done. Looks like Simon T's Zed before he modified it. I'm a bit of a fan of the color and for sure the club needs more members down your way. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted December 16, 2014 Administrators Posted December 16, 2014 Why do you say the bonnet isn't correct? Seems correct for that year to me. Looks like a great example, whatever you paid was cheap compared to the cost of restoring 1 to that level. Good colour combo the biscuit and green combo. Quote
WogsRus Posted December 16, 2014 Author Posted December 16, 2014 what do you recon its worth and what i should have paid for it? So far i need to get on top of a weird miss that happens, like ignition but literally the whole ignition is new, all of it, new coil, leads, sparks, points, rotor, capacitor you name it, all new. One thing i found, it runs like 18 deg static timing by the timing light, i think it might be re curved dizzy when the engine use to run triples? What should i look at. I did check the plugs, clean but a bit lean i think, i have three bolt early carbs, how do i richen them up? Quote
Linton Posted December 16, 2014 Posted December 16, 2014 it is worth the exact amount you have paid for it, it is worth more, or less, to me Quote
WogsRus Posted December 16, 2014 Author Posted December 16, 2014 Linton, you sound like my wife. LOL well i got it as is with shit load of spares for 10K so i think its a bargain..? Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted December 16, 2014 Moderators Posted December 16, 2014 Great purchase there for 10k. Work alone on a body done properly is more than that! I'm with Gav, bonnet looks to be correct for that year; late 76-77 cars got the fluted bonnet and later door latch / catch. Is it a miss or flat spot? Does it cough and splutter or just drop in power? If the SU's don't have the larger needles, it may be running lean when it needs more fuel? Perhaps get a youtube video of it to help explain what you hear... Quote
WogsRus Posted December 17, 2014 Author Posted December 17, 2014 Zedman240 The car coughs and shudders like instant stop, i will see if i can get it on the phone and then post it up on youtube. I have no idea about Su and the like, other then they are 3 bolt. I will do my best and thanks for the assistance Quote
CroS13 Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 That's a complete steal for that price, considering only paid a few thousand less for mine and it needs a complete restoration. Really nice looking car! Rudolf. Quote
oldmates260z Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 The SU's do not look like the ones off a 240Z, they do not have the long neck. May be there is a setup issue. There was another thread a few years ago with the same issue but I cannot find it. May be a partially blocked fuel filter. Quote
WogsRus Posted December 17, 2014 Author Posted December 17, 2014 so i went through the whole ignition, wd40 everything, re-gaped and checked wiring., I found that the ballast resistor wiring was cracked at the terminal wire thus when hot it could have broke down. The coil seams nice and cool now to touch which i don't recall being last time. Took car for a drive, seams ok bu down on torque so spark must be less. I am installing a brand new L24E dizzy from my brothers old car he has, its a genuine Nissan one so that might help. In regards to the carburetors, they say SU on them but who knows. Quote
WogsRus Posted December 17, 2014 Author Posted December 17, 2014 Also, the timing marks are 20 deg at 1000 rpm it wont really idle lower steady, no idea why. if i set it to say 7, it simply does not pull and brakes down a lot, simply will not drive, ideas Quote
red76z Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 Nice car mate. I saw you on the road today. Good to see another zed on the road. Mine is a 76 260 2+2 under going a full rotisserie build and a LS1 injection. Should be rolling about September next year. Enjoy the car. Quote
WogsRus Posted December 17, 2014 Author Posted December 17, 2014 yeah i love to drive it, if not, its the mighty 120y coupe or the patrol. LOL. HAy, you know anyone with triples for sale in Tasmania. I could certainly use your knowledge on my zd to get it to run right. Who in Hobart is best to tune the datsun carbs etc Quote
zzzzed Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 So you have a new zzzzed hey . Nice work. It looks like a cracker. Quote
Lynton Posted December 18, 2014 Posted December 18, 2014 Check the fusible link is not letting you down, that is one sweet machine, lynton Quote
WogsRus Posted December 19, 2014 Author Posted December 19, 2014 Drove around all day today, no more miss, here a sound clip Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted December 19, 2014 Administrators Posted December 19, 2014 Drove around all day today, no more miss, here a sound clip Sounds good, so have you confirmed what the issue was? Or do you think it was a combination of stuff? Quote
WogsRus Posted December 19, 2014 Author Posted December 19, 2014 Well i think it was something to do with wiring/ballast resistor, as the coil use to get so hot you couldn't touch it, now its nice and cool. Quote
chris240 Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 Haar, dont recall my SUs ever sounding that nice. Quote
