Administrators gav240z Posted June 3, 2013 Administrators Posted June 3, 2013 Hi guys, Well I might be jumping the gun slightly but it's looking 99.9% certain I'll be coming back to Australia in the next couple of months. I've finally decided I had enough of the rain and decided it was time to come back after leaving around 6 years ago. I'll be staying with Google, so I'll be moving to Sydney (since that's where the Australian office is). So I'm wondering a few things: 1. What is a good area to rent in Sydney? - I don't mind a small commute by train to the city if... #2 is full-filled 2. Ideally I want to find a place where I can have a small garage (maybe a small apartment that has a garage on the side), any suggestions? >> Although I won't have the 240z, I plan to ship the FD RX-7 back and god knows they need constant attention haha. 3. The 240z is in Melbourne and will probably stay that way for now, I plan to visit the parents every so often and use the time there to work on the 240z and get bits and pieces done. 4. I can now give stick to the Mexicans . But generally speaking I just wanted to share the news, I'm hoping that by coming back to Oz I can start to get stuff on my own Z done again and feel more part of the community eg: attend events and get you know a lot of you better! I also want to try and find time to help take the site further, particularly from a mobile accessibility stand-point. Quote
lightmaster240z Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 It nice to here that you are returning back home well nearly. I look forward to cathing up when you make it back to Melbourne. At least you be able to make to the next Xmas BBQ Bruce Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted June 3, 2013 Author Administrators Posted June 3, 2013 Yeah looking forward to the X-mas BBQ, it will actually be my first one! Would like to go on a Tassie Trip also at some point. I think it's the most under-utilised event we have going. Quote

Moderators PB260Z Posted June 4, 2013 Moderators Posted June 4, 2013 Giday Welcome back to Aus, alomst anyway. Sydney, well the rental market is not real cheap, but plenty of choice it really depends on what your lifestyle is. Inner city is really exe, but within a 10-15 min train ride from the CBD there is all kinds of choices. Budget will be the biggest driver. If you do settle in Sydney may need to a road trip to the Xmas BBQ. Cheers PB Quote
jasonmac Posted June 5, 2013 Posted June 5, 2013 Yeah Sydney totally depends on the $$$. Feel free to PM if you want the low-down on any particular suburb. I personally liked the Inner West but I'm a bit further out (near Lidcombe) as I needed a house. Quote
chris240 Posted June 5, 2013 Posted June 5, 2013 Suggest, Look around the wharf side of manly and fairlight is a hidden jem and also Balgowlah. Try to find something within 10 mins walk of a ferry and forget the trains altogether. Having lived in that area, I caught the ferry to circular quay where our office was in the cbd. I arrived to work stress free, not having to put up with sydneys shocking train system. It may cost you $30-60 more a week in rent, but believe me, its worth it. Living on that side of sydney was so much more relaxing than mid west, or say surry hills / newtown area. You will also be 10 mins away from James Flett, 240z workshop and L-series motor guru... (He comes in second after our own Peter mac ) I loved my northern beaches. Quote

I remember in Melbourne being packed like a sardine into the Connex trains and they were always late! Funny how it all ran better under the public system. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted June 10, 2013 Author Administrators Posted June 10, 2013 I've had some good suggestions via email on areas to check out, what is the best website for looking at rental properties? I was using www.realestate.com.au but not sure if there are others out there? Ideally my g/f and I are looking for a small house with say 2 bedrooms, (1 room for guests to stay) and a medium sized backyard (she wants to get a dog) and ideally an under-cover area / garage for working on the car and keeping it out of the weather. I plan to take transport to work (so train) and or bicycle - I ride to work everyday in Dublin and love it (apart from the rain, but Sydney should be better in this regard). So 15-20 min train ride from the city centre is ok. Depending on how long I end up staying in Sydney - who knows the 240z may end up in NSW? I've already braced myself for rental prices, but I plan to budget by eating less meals out and making other budget changes to suit. My biggest expenses outside of rent, tend to be my hobbies - cars and from the sounds of it pet food haha . Quote

Administrators gav240z Posted September 3, 2013 Author Administrators Posted September 3, 2013 Just an update day 3 in Sydney now. Still looking for somewhere to live, but have somewhere temporary for now. I do like the Ferry system to work. Currently in Rose Bay for now, but not sure where I'll end up yet. Quote
PeterAllen Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Welcome and apologies for the present Sydney weather - not like an Irish spring I bet! Nothing like starting at Rose Bay and working you way down the desirability ladder. There was a popular song in the 60s/70s about the Rose Bay ferry - a nice way to start the day. Just yell out (or e-mail) if you are after info or assistance. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted September 3, 2013 Author Administrators Posted September 3, 2013 Thanks Peter will do. Quote

Administrators gav240z Posted September 8, 2013 Author Administrators Posted September 8, 2013 Hi Guys, So turns out finding the ideal rental property is not so easy.. I inspected a couple over the weekend which were ok but there is quite a bit of competition out there also! This would have been perfect. http://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-nsw-lilyfield-411283251 But no pets allowed, although on the plus side it had a yard and space to grow some vegetables etc.. Plus it was pretty close to work. Bathroom was pretty old (which was the only other con). The pet thing is important to my g/f because it was 1 of the reasons she wanted to move back to Australia, so she could finally have a dog. So here is a short list of some of the areas I'm looking in. 1. Leichthard / Balmain / Rozelle and close by. 2. Surry Hills / Paddington 3. Newtown / Alexandria / St Peters 4. Bondi / Coogee / Maroubra - but a little more expensive due to demand and harder to find a garage here. We are also considering the North Side Beaches 1. Manly is a bit far and pricey 2. Balgowlah / Mosman - still relatively convenient by Ferry I'm trying to stay close to CBD because both g/f and I work there and it might be a bit cheaper further out but the trade off is cost of transport to city daily and time of course. Finding the right place with a garage + garden in 1 of these areas is tough, so the other option is to save a little on rent get something without a garage space and rent a garage separate (although this is less ideal). I did find a place like this: http://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-nsw-mascot-411244139 Which I quite like the idea of (living in a warehouse) but the g/f was less keen on it . Anyway just thought I'd post up here and see if anyone is sharing a garage space or renting 1? Or knows of any such places in the above mentioned areas? Quote
Moderators PB260Z Posted September 8, 2013 Moderators Posted September 8, 2013 Gidday Gav Have a look on Gumtree there are often garages for rent listed. Welcome to the crazy Sydney real estate world Cheers Peter Quote
