Have a look on Gumtree there are often garages for rent listed.

Welcome to the crazy Sydney real estate world

Cheers

Peter

Yeah I've been looking there, thanks mate. Yes crazy indeed. I do recall Dublin being like this before it all came crashing down though... although I think rental demand will always be high in Australia especially inner suburbs.

Being geographically close to Daring Harbour doesn’t always translate to cheaper and faster transport.

Have you considered some suburbs on the Illawarra Line which lie between the high-rise suburbs of Tempe and Hurstville - suburbs like Kogarah, Carlton?  They are less latte sipping DINKs and more family orientated (garden, pets & garage) and there are quite a few available with the options you are after. You might want to consider at least having a look.

Rule 1 , dont ever ever ever tell the agent you have or will be getting a dog... :P

The suburbs youve listed are all the dream suburbs and amongst the most expensive in Australia, as peter said, head south.

After a number of years of the Sydney rat race, I also headed south...around 300kms ;D

This x2

I've lived on the south side in 3 locations along the train line. The train ride in is about 30 min which is faster than living in one of those inner-city suburbs you mentioned where you have to catch a bus. The streets are wider, the rents are cheaper, the lots and houses are larger and the garages exist for one and are larger.

In any case, as you've found out, the competition is cut throat for rental properties so either be prepared to pay over asking price to snag something or be prepared to compromise. :-(

Thanks Peter, yes I did start looking at Tempe but not much further south / west than that. I'll take a look at those other suburbs also. I'm definitely open to suggestions and haven't set anything in stone in terms of where I'm willing to live.

Although 1 of the reason I did want to live close to Pyrmont was the fact that I would like to cycle to work (if at all possible?) since I find it cheap (free), a good way to keeping fit and a stress free mode of transport.

That's a good rule, I've told my g/f the same rule. I say it's best to move in first, once they know you're a good tenant then you can discuss further. At least we don't have a dog yet, so we aren't stuck from that perspective.

I too would love to leave the rat race, but I'm stuck in Sydney for work. I do see myself moving to Country Victoria or even NSW at some point though to escape, first things first though.

Yes it's a bit bonkers alright. We have already upped the budget a couple of times but just can't find the 'right' place even at $700 p/week. So I'm starting to think a little further out is probably the way to go.
