Oh, a "diff shop",,,, a washer where circlip goes? What the? Ask them , politely, have they done these before, or are they more used to Bogg Worming 78's out of Holdens and Falcoons!!! If the stubs are not attached to half shafts, take them with you, so they can see wot they dun! Have them make sure they do go in, after they get it right. Oh, and for all your pain, they should not be charging you any extra to "fix" their work.
-
Suggest pulling the diff out, remove back cover, undo hemisphere from carrier, and have a clse inspection from inside as to what is stopping the shaft from fully engaging. The circlip may have dislodged, ( rare) and settled into the final recess, thus preventing the stub from fully engaging.
-
And with what are you trying to get it in with? Your hands only? If they are correct, ( long vs short- i cant remember which, sorry) they do need a decent whack with a mallet or hammer onto bit f hardwood, as the circlip can be a bit stiff.

Any helpful books on suspension designing and engineering?

OR,,,,, all the "gunna's" Preparing a car for eleventy years, that sits in a garage, never sees the light of day,,, but,,, apparently, it is already the fastest thing since whenever. To the OP, Where have you gone? You got on here, asked a question, got some pretty good answers, but zip from you. Why do we bother? If you are lurking, get back on here and let us know what you are planning. -
Hold a bit of alloy or whatever angle or stiff flat across the rim edges on the back side, drop a mm rule down to the hub mount face , where wheel bolts onto hub, That distance. 95 mm or less is usefull

Fred Puhn book is not outdated Get it. The next books you should look for are by Carroll Smith, he was the tech guy that Moffat brought out from the states He has three in a series Tune to Win, Engineer to Win, and (something else) to Win, all are xcellent. Another is "Formula car suspension technology" -
What is the backspace measurement? And, Are these tapered lug nut, or shouldered shank lugnut fitment? I know some of the historic race guys like these old five hole jobbies!

Modulator valve body is faulty. An overhaul kit includes a new pan gasket and a new mod body. Dont try to repair the old one, too complicated. Plug and play. If old fluid that came out smelt like burnt toast, the bands/drums may need adjusting, if possible in those units? I did a couple of TH 400 Chev tranns, fitted a "shift kit" body to them, made a world of difference, crisp shifts, no sluggish action, and when manually shifting the lever, it did what you wanted, when you wanted it. It was stuck on the back of a 383 cube in a 66 Belair, up the arse was a Ford 9" with a Detriot locker, THAT banged around, a lot!! Thing'd pull some cool licquorice strips on the road!

And, if you get rid of the standard pre set fuel pressure reg/return to tank off the rail thing, replace it with a adjustable one ie Malpasi, you can get it giving you the oressure it needs, and accurately, using a decent inline guage running off a Tee, with the engine at various throttle psitions. Lurch was right, the stock pump, will produce between 40 to 60 psi in pulse, but the L-Jetronis system needs to be regulated to an even 35 to 40. Problem is the stock press regulator gets tired, and allows it to pulse, thus over fueling the odd injector or two. To OP, get a decent ie 4" diam fuel pressure guage tee'd in, and run the engine, at various rpm's see what she is doing, compared to the settings as per the manual that pzg302 is sending.

Qld based guys. 23/24 February trackday opportunity at Morgan Park
dat2kman replied to dat2kman's topic in Racing Your Car
The HRCC only organise one of these each year. Generally February. They do plan to run a full day of sprints only, at Norwell Driving Centre, later in the year. The other things you could try, and your cars would be suitable, is the Regularity component of the two larger weekends they organise at Morgan Park, but for these, you do need to be a paid up member, and hold a CAMS L2S licence, and entry fee is higher again. Dave 1600, of course you are welcome, i will get info out to all, when available. To make it even more enticing, the teack operator could??, be running private practice on the friday, and you can enter both Saturday and asunday all on the one set of forms. As you are already a cams affiliated club member and hold a L2S licence, it will just be the entry fee. Oh and there should??, be passenger rides, so maybe the kids might like a trip north!!! -

Peter T! The Saturday component of that weekend, is designed for basic standard very limited modified, registered road going cars. Yours will be fine for this! It is an opportunity for you to get a little more comfortable with driving yor car, in safe controlled conditions, you may even explore it handling capabilities, and yor own limits. There will be sessions where an experienced driver, sits in your passenger seat, and "talks" you around the circuit a few times. The emphasis is on fun and having a bit of a play. -
Have a play around with egg whites, handbrushed onto panels, many layers, let it sit in the sun. Then hit it with about 10 coats of clear. Try on an old bit of panel, ruogh it up a bit with 180 grit first Allow the coats of eggwhite to dry, give it about 10 coats. For interesting effect, try to get a hold of some fine mica flakes, hand scatter uniformly, brush off the loose bits, re use. Panel beater guy did this to a Gemini sedan, looked interstingly odd when done. Didnt last long, he then ripped it off, and hit it with electric charged "fall down" paint. Look at it from front, it was orange, look at it from back, it was green!

280zx revs up in park, but has no power in drive.
dat2kman replied to steady88's topic in General Maintenance
Somethg to do with it being placed into D, which sends a signal, or a switched position sensor on the auto trans selector, to the ECU, telling the ECU, "hey, i'm in D we can go now" ,,, not working. Will it rev past 1500 in 2 nd or 1st on the trans selector? And, what about in Reverse? Tried jacking it up, placed on jack stands, ie with no load on wheels? Just taking a stab in the dark here! -
I hope to be running one of the four cars, aiming to get the brakes correct on rhe Mazda RX7 sports sedan. And i have been challenged by a guy who owns a Nissan 240RS rally car who feels my claim that the ex Fury 120Y is superior in power and handling. I should be there over the two days, i have got transpirtation to and from sorted out.

I, nor you, can dictate what teack will be used. Last year, they DID use turn right after bridge! This year, i have no idea, but, would you like me to get you an info pack? Just in case !!! -
Qld forun members, see my pist in the Racing Your Car section. It's not really racing your car, but a no pressure easy simple way for you to try out Morgan Park Raceway, on 23/24 Feb 2013 Any of your cars can run, Z's ZX's newer cars, sliw cars, fast cars. It is a chance to have a bit of fun at Morgan Park, Warwick, without the pressure of the more formal four round DuperSprint series held there.

Anyone on hete interested in a no frills have a go track day at Morgan Park? A weekend is being held by HRCC for its members, and members friends! Of course, you are ALL my friends! The setup is, on the Saturday they will run untimed, lap sessions, in groups of 8 to 10 cars, depending on which track layout they are allocated, it is more for testing, tuning and just trying it out. It is called TTT! The sunday is a bit more serious with timed sprints, in groups of cars. You can enter one, the other or both days! As this is a CAMS track, you will need a cAMS licence, but WAIT, the HRCC will organise for you a one or two day licence, just for the weekend, as well as affilate memetship to the HRCC just for this event. And because it is an official club event, anyone with the concessional rego can use the wedkend for a valid run up to Morgan Pk. Anyone intersted, message me, or reply here, i will get an information pack out to you. Once again, its a no frill no fuss no pressure opportunity to try out Morgan Oark, rather than the much higher demands of the full on four round SuperSprint series that costs around $560 to run Entry fee for this will be under $200 for both days, and around $100 for each day. TBC

Spotted in Cape Town at the airport (140z or 160z?)
dat2kman replied to gav240z's topic in Off Topic Discussions
No, that one at Prospect is a Violet 710 These too were brought in for the Cross rallies, for Fury and Aaltonen, and Dunkerton in late 70's Simon, yes the 140Y? ( it does have a correct model designation, cant recall atm) did come with go fast bits, and did have better looking front and rear end than the bread and butter Aussie car. We just did not get the intersting models, across the whole Datsun range !!! -

dat2kman replied to gav240z's topic in Off Topic Discussions
We got that body as a Datsun 120y Hatchback. In South Africa they got it as a L series engine but at 1400 cc, ie a L14 four cylinder. Nose styling had a pronounced point, four headlamps, and tail lights as per pic, the pic shown is something like a SSS model, Two were brought into Australia, one driven by Skekar Mehta in mid 1970's Souther Cross ralles, it is still here. It may have had a LZ twin cam 1800 cc engine in it for the Crosses. Peter Mc, ask young Les, he may know more! -
Peter RX5, What are the costs for Morgan park sprints set at for 2013? Does anyone know? Series registration fee? Payable up front? Each weekends entry fee? And are they still restricting Friday practice to the Sprint entrants? Cost now to join Z club! And cost now to hold CAMS L2S licence? To play at Morgan Park. Other option, HRCC in late February are holding a come and try weekend at MP, no need to be a member, or hold CAMS licence, as they can isdue one day single event licence. At least that gives you all a chance to have a gentle try. No racing, just lap dash/sprints, with other cars on track.

Stevoget some decent headers, the correct header gasket, get it all and the car up to Les at Fat Pipes Lawnton, ask for thickest wall tubing, tell him it has to meet Lakeside raceway requirements for nose. Tell him you dont want drone sound. He has done enough to know what works. You could consider having him dock the 2into 1 outlet, fit a twin flange, and twin pipe it all the way back. Get a nice note then. I had them do a 13B peripheral Port in my mid engined sports sedan, did the twin longs, into a Y, then into the biggest magnaflow can he could fit. I thought, this is gonna be noisy, but bugga me, it aint. The twin longs knock a lot of adverse pressure waves compared to the headers your have pictured above. If you really like, i can get in those oh so sexy Kameari Drag headers!

Just buy a ready built frint running car. Simple easy no fuss. Develop it a little more, maybe get a Peter/Les engine done. They will not allow a rb turbo engined Z into group 2/ marque sports. The only pissible one would be the USA spec 280ZXT that was L28 with old school technology turbo, and that is the problem. Why not give Historic Group S or T a go. I have two cars for sale ready to race, and can supply a standard unprepoed car fully elegible for Sb, that will, once finished, have the ptential to win Sb class, in the right hands. Or if you are very set on all out Sports Sedans, i have one of those for sale too. It won the Qld Sports Sedan Championship, and is fully sorted comes with plenty spare fairly fresh rubber, fresh engine, and about to be rekitted brakes. What budget are you allowing to fully prep a RB engined Z that can only be used in lap dashes and club level supersprints? 18 25 40 80 k I could have what you can use at each of these price points, but they are/would be full circuit race cars, all in the genteel Historic discipline.

Graft the TPS from the 280zx onto the rb30 throttle body. The internal signals from the rb30 TPS are incorrect for the 280ZX ecu Also chase for continuity all wires, if using a tired cracked 30 plus year old ZX loom, they can get up resistance if handled roughly on any engine swaps. Checked all plugs to injectors, correct settings? Had injectors fliwed and cleaned? They will run quite fine with all emisdions crap removed/blocked off,,,, on a racetrack!!!

Nup, even better, it has a lead weight in the front end! My thing'd still cream it!
-
And a five stud wheel conversion, and big brakes! Dusint matter, my little four cylinder Datsun convertible would still nail it!
