  1. Socks to be you! At least you didn't have a bigger problem. I've not seen that before, but I guess I won't be using sock filters on my Z. By the way I heard this is the reason pod filters are not permitted in Australia? Because of fire hazards like this?
  2. Another project. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Datsun-240z-Sports-1973-2D-Coupe-5-SP-Manual-2-4L-Twin-Carb-/261224768113?pt=AU_Cars&hash=item3cd235a271&_uhb=1
  3. Just some words of advice from someone who has moved abroad. I stored my Z in my parents garage while I was away, I recently got it out again early last year in Feb and I was so glad I've kept it and didn't sell it. Even if your not driving it at the moment you may find that you come back from your trip and fall in love with it all over again.
  4. So much awesome-sauce love the colour and wheel combination. Well done matey, it's been a long slog but home stretch now, just don't get bored and put it up for sale, like so many do .
  5. Yeah looking forward to the X-mas BBQ, it will actually be my first one! Would like to go on a Tassie Trip also at some point. I think it's the most under-utilised event we have going.
  6. I'm sure this link went around before? http://studiotimecapsule.com/home Just a few links to show what I mean: http://studiotimecapsule.com/restoration_of_twiggys_toyota_2000gt http://studiotimecapsule.com/aluminum_datsun_240z http://studiotimecapsule.com/aluminum_fabrication
  7. Hi guys, Well I might be jumping the gun slightly but it's looking 99.9% certain I'll be coming back to Australia in the next couple of months. I've finally decided I had enough of the rain and decided it was time to come back after leaving around 6 years ago. I'll be staying with Google, so I'll be moving to Sydney (since that's where the Australian office is). So I'm wondering a few things: 1. What is a good area to rent in Sydney? - I don't mind a small commute by train to the city if... #2 is full-filled 2. Ideally I want to find a place where I can have a small garage (maybe a small apartment that has a garage on the side), any suggestions? >> Although I won't have the 240z, I plan to ship the FD RX-7 back and god knows they need constant attention haha. 3. The 240z is in Melbourne and will probably stay that way for now, I plan to visit the parents every so often and use the time there to work on the 240z and get bits and pieces done. 4. I can now give stick to the Mexicans . But generally speaking I just wanted to share the news, I'm hoping that by coming back to Oz I can start to get stuff on my own Z done again and feel more part of the community eg: attend events and get you know a lot of you better! I also want to try and find time to help take the site further, particularly from a mobile accessibility stand-point.
  8. Love your enthusiasm mate! Car is looking good, I love the photo with the Evo and Supra, the Z just looks so much more elegant in my opinion. Is your 180sx a Type X? Looks good next to the Z in the shed . I can only hope to have a garage like that some day soon!
  9. I love that flared black S30Z, shame it was raining mate. When I see photos like this I can't help but think, why oh why is our hobby so damn expensive? I would love a C110 or C10. The C110 was always under appreciated in Australia, bit of an odd shape but time has made them retro-cool.
  10. Surely you could find a trashed old L28 and just clean it up, likewise with the carbs. Just find a pair beyond economic repair and spend (many) hours polishing it up. Voila table. A lot of fellas make rotary clocks or similar, since when a rotor throws a tip the housing and rotor is often trashed as a result.
  11. Cool, is that yellow an original factory colour?
  12. Hey mate, So a bit of Yahoo! Auction trawling and I found these. http://www.importmonster.com.au/view?url=http://page4.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/d144013011 http://www.importmonster.com.au/view?url=http://page16.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/u48130028 http://www.importmonster.com.au/view?url=http://page22.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/l183034955
  13. Retro Z - you shouldn't buy carbs until you know what you want from the engine. For that I'd consult someone like Peter. For the record I bought my Mikuni's from the US on eBay about 8 years ago 44's baby! http://www.viczcar.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=1&pos=15 http://www.viczcar.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=1074&fullsize=1 No problems, but I think I paid over PayPal and I declared them as motorcycle parts, didn't get taxed on it that way .
  14. @Tonyger - if I had my time again, I would never have sold the first 240z I bought. I will have to get some photos of it before I stripped it down but here it is undressed. http://www.viczcar.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=199&page=1 The reason I regret selling it is that I tried to do too much at once, I was young naive and full of enthusiasm. I thought it needed to be perfect etc.. so I was going to strip it and rebuild it with a full paint job. I didn't have the budget for it. It was an extremely original undamaged shell (the roof had a dent from someone sitting on it) but you could hardly tell and it was my very first car. I still have it's motor sitting in my garage. I would like to buy it back someday (I know who owns it, he has a couple of them!) hehe. Anyway for me it's the 1 that got away, given my time again I would have fixed the rust under the battery, perhaps stripped the motor and dash to do it. Tidied up a few other rusty areas, but left it wearing the paint it had. Focused on mechanical work and enjoyed driving it while fixing it up. Eventually when time, money and resource permitted I would have repainted it and done a full strip down. I love my current 240z, but it's not my first ever car and it lacks the originality that my first 240z had. It was the kind of car everyone with experience would like to restore, everything was there it was just tired. The last guy who had it loved it also, it was his daily drive (even had the original hub-caps)! I do have videos of it somewhere also!
  15. Damn that looks great!
  16. Guys I know it's funny but let's try and keep this on topic .
  17. Greg Ira BRE build looks amazing.
  18. Pete you do amazing work, would love to get you to build an L-series for my Z. I'm scared I'll need to take out a mortgage though! Looking forward to seeing what you do with this 1.
  19. Thanks also guys. Good tip on the grease gun or putting it back on the car. This is a spare set I'm rebuilding at the moment so the car can be kept on the road. I'm going to powdercoat them and make them pretty with braided lines and speed-bleeder screws etc.. Going to get the fronts done first and see how they turn out. @Cozza - Sounds like Scoota has some spares so may be well worth having a go at pulling them apart? What's the worst that could happen?
  20. Yep when it comes to 240z prices the only way is up, baby! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtKADQnjQmc That car is owned by a member here, can't recall the username now though. I believe Steward Wilkins workshop has done quite a bit of work on it. http://www.swmotorsport.com.au/
  21. Yeah I have been told the same thing about taking them apart. For what it's worth I'm not going to disassemble mine as I have no idea of the torque specs required on the bolts etc.. Would rather not deal with a leaky caliper. On the topic of rebuilding calipers - if a piston won't come out - with compressed air. Does that mean the caliper is probably fubar and better to just source another? I'm rebuilding rear calipers (for another car) and the fronts were fine and the left hand rear is good, but the right hand rear is not moving, there is quite a bit of surface rust on the calipers and near the rubbers. So going to assume the piston has seized and it isn't worth the headache to try and get it out?
  22. This is all very interesting and sad to see at the same time. I have a feeling this could ripple down into other areas also. I for 1 am shocked at property prices in Australia and I think this could have an impact on properties if people are out of work and foreclosures come in the market could get flooded with property for sale and then things might tank. I've been looking at the option of buying a property back home, but can't help but feel it's a bubble about to burst. Then again maybe I'm over exaggerating things? It would suck to leave recession Europe and come home to recession Australia :S
  23. Sure gavindoolan (at) gmail (dot) com Cheers,
  24. Thanks Thriller, I feel like Christopher Columbus discovering America only to see I've been beaten to the punch by the native American Indians. .
