Hey guys,

I have info about what I've been doing stuck all over the forum so I'm going to centralise it in my very own project journal. I try to do some of the work myself but Uni commitments and lack of knowledge often have me leaving it to the professionals :)

Pictures of when I first bought the car:

I replaced my gear stick knob and steering wheel:

I installed a Retro style modern stereo:

I am installing a pair of 240z SU Carbs:

I installed Speedhut Gauge Faces:

I am getting new suspension installed:

I have installed a new front air dam:

I converted auto to manual:

I had central locking installed:

More to add soon!

Well I've had updates to the interior, suspension and brakes, which I put into their relevant threads.

I have also purchased a set of personalised plates: 26OZE

And I purchased the centre console arm rest from MSA:

I have just received a quote for about $1000 (mates rates) to remove the vinyl roof and repaint it red underneath, paint my air dam red and also remove all of the badges and cracks from the rear. I have decided that rather than repainting the 280Z (on side stripe) to 260Z I am going to simply have a professional transfer made and stick it on top. It will not be noticeable and I'll keep it like that until I have the whole car resprayed in a few years time.

Since the nationals are so close I thought it was about bloody time my cars paint had a touch up. I booked it in with my mate to get the following work done:

  • Removing vinyl roof
  • Removing rear badges (the ones that said 'nissan 280z' and the picture of a flamingo)
  • Changing the 8 to a 6 on the '280z' side stripe
  • Removing the extra badges on the bonnet and relocating the Nissan Badges
  • Painting my front air dam red
  • Removing any rust that he finds along the way
  • Repainting entire bonnet red, including the black air vents

Dropped my car in to my mates body shop on Wednesday. He's been doing all the work himself (he does their admin usually) to save me spending anything on labor. He's been very good with everything so far - communication, workmanship, price. I really can't wait to see the final results.  ;D

He found a small patch of rust under the windscreen rubber, which was fairly straight forward for him to wire brush out. The previous visible rust in the boot hatch has already been removed (where the water channel is). Apparently there are about 8 layers of paint in some places like the hatch... which seems a bit ridiculous.

If I wasn't so busy with uni I would be going in myself to give him a hand.. :(

I still have not decided 100% on painting the air vents on the bonnet red to match, and I was wondering what people opinions of that look would be?

The black goes with you front spoiler, leave it, then if your still undecided go ahead and paint them.

Hey yeah it did but one of the things I'm doing is having my air dam painted red. With a red air dam, and a red roof wouldn't red vents be more suitable?  ???

Perhaps colour code the vents with your tail light valance, wheel inners or new side stripes

The wheels will be coming off eventually, but I will still have black side stripes so it might match black vents?

Also once the black roof is gone, the black rear windscreen shade will be coming off as well.

Hmmm yeah interior is black.

Any photoshop whizzes want to paint my roof/air dam red and see if it would suit red/black louvers?

I might just leave it black and see how it looks...

Right  Mate

It looks charcoal in the pics

Just purchased a 280zx dizzy and am getting my mechanic to install it. I know I could probably do it but I haven't been able to find the time to get a lot of work done on the car myself.

I'm also sending the car to an air conditioning place recommended by my mechanic to get it inspected and get a quote for regassing an old compressor I have and connecting it all up.

Does anyone have any useful resources with information on the setup for the vacuum canister that is used to power the demister controls? I took mine off and I would really like to put it back on but I don't have any information about it.

Hey guys,

Does anyone know any reason that a brand new reco'd dizzy wouldn't deliver the trigger to the coil? Apparently there is a full 12V on the +ve side of the coil but there is no trigger being received from the dizzy module and hence the car isn't running well if at all.

This is the info that my auto elec gave me, he thinks the module on the dizzy is stuffed. Can anyone else suggest anything?

Steve

Yeah cheers Dimitri. The auto elec says its no good so i'll get the new module under the warranty I got with the distributor.

I'm a bit worried that they might have just wired it wrong and stuffed it up and then blamed it on the module.  :-\

I've heard with the original Hitatchi module, if you connect the wires in reverse once, it kills the module instantly. Not sure if that's accurate, but I don't want to find out. If you have access to an oscilloscope, you can check the output of the Hall effect sensor to make sure it's 100%. Also check the magnetic plate under the "teeth" to make sure it's still in one piece. If its broken, you get a real weak signal from the sensor.

Can new one's of these be purchased?

You will have to check with the Nissan dealership. Last one I bought was almost 10 years ago for about $28. Last I've heard they are NLA but I hope I'm wrong. If you do find one, you have to treat it like you are carrying a wedding cake; one drop on a hrd floor and it's all over..
