dat2kman Posted November 26, 2014 Posted November 26, 2014 Re the tie rod end extended thread bolts, What was you current toe in/toe out changes being recorded through droop and bump, from the static height position? And, on fitting those extension bolts, what are you getting re toe-in/toe-out now? Quote
d3c0y Posted November 26, 2014 Author Posted November 26, 2014 Haven't fitted them yet, I'll cross that bridge when I get to it as i need brakes and wheels on teh car so i know how long i can have them etc. Quote

d3c0y Posted January 8, 2015 Author Posted January 8, 2015 After return from Christmas holidays, I was disappointed (but not surprised) to see that the body work had not been finished as promised. At least there were signs of major work and as an added bonus, Dave the panel beater had gotten excited about the car and ended up taking the whole thing back to bare metal. The car is pretty good rust wise, as far as Datsuns go and had some repairs back in '89. Anything not up to scratch is being removed and fixed. The right rear 1/4 I mentioned previously that was full of bog was hiding some horrors. The guy I purchased the car from has sworn multiple times that he didn't have any major accidents in the car so when the car was under 10 years old it looks like it copped a shunt in Sydney traffic with the original owners. It's too small an area to warrant a new 1/4 panel, so the damage will be pulled out reformed as best as it can and will be finished with filler. The rear valance is going to be cleaned up and the panel joins recreated to look factory. Anyway you get the idea the rust is getting cut out and new metal welded in, same old. Quote
44014 Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Ready in time for the nationals? And what are we doing with rear brakes? Getting the custom bracket made and mounting a brembo handbrake caliper or r31 disks and calipers for now? Quote
260DET Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Why are we here if not to do all that and more Quote
d3c0y Posted January 14, 2015 Author Posted January 14, 2015 It's so not going to be done for the nationals. I'm going to Lead Foot Festival in NZ in a 3 weeks again lol. Quote
260DET Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 Lead Foot Festival? Better tell us more about that. In General? Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted January 14, 2015 Administrators Posted January 14, 2015 If it was me and I could find a decent 1/4 panel I'd just replace that section. It looks like quite a bit of rippled metal there and it's going to take serious man hours to straighten it out. A new 1/4 panel could be un-spot welded and installed a lot faster than that! Probably get a better finish also. Don't get me wrong, it can be repaired and probably done very well but the time invested vs cost of good 1/4 panel and install you'll probably find that fixing what you have will cost more. Besides you've spent so much money on this thing already to get a good result, why not go a little further and find a good 1/4 panel? Quote
d3c0y Posted January 15, 2015 Author Posted January 15, 2015 Lead Foot Festival? Better tell us more about that. In General? It's run by Steve Millen in NZ, basically an invite only (to compete) hill climb held every two years. Here is coverage of the last one i went to - http://www.speedhunters.com/2013/03/the-leadfoot-festival-experience/ My mate in NZ has a Lambro Super Laggera that we will take out there and the trip over there through the Coromandles is an epic. Last time we had a 360 as well. Quote

I put the question to my panel beater and he said by the time he works on it a bit more and the arches are cut out for the flares, there is no point. It would cost too much to buy and fit the quarter compared to repairing it for the amount of damage there and what the flare is going to cover. You can see from all the stuff he has circled that he gets what i'm trying to do with the car and he really does, so I trust his professional opinion. Bog has come a long way too so having a little bit of filler in there isn't as bad as it used to be and it will be the only section with any amount of filler in it. In the phot it's only half finished so i'll go grab another pic hopefully pre-bog. Quote
luvemfast Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 www.speedhunters.com/2013/03/the-leadfoot-festival-experience Ok That looks pretty good! Quote
HKSZ Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 If I'm not rallying in April I'm going to Race to the Sky, so jealous Leadfoot is on my to do list but going in a Lambo that's just obscene. Quote
260DET Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 On the subject of bog and panel preparation, a few years ago a couple of us looked at a S30 that had been left out in the open for years. At first glance it looked hopeless. But the owner was a pro painter who had gone overseas 'temporarily' and had repainted the Zed before he left. Underneath the dirt the body was in amazing condition, hardly any rust. It just goes to show what can be done if the job is done right. Quote
d3c0y Posted January 15, 2015 Author Posted January 15, 2015 This car has literally sat in a shed from the early 90s to present too which has helped. Of the time it was on the road, it was owned by a fighter pilot stationed in Darwin. It was funny when i pulled the front guards off for the first time and the car was caked in desert! Quote
d3c0y Posted June 2, 2015 Author Posted June 2, 2015 I haven't exactly been pushing out the project updates on here lately, but I feel you only want so many pics of my car in primer. Luckily it's now in colour and after 6 months at the 'beaters, the not so silver zed should be home in the next couple of weeks. I will wait until the car is fully sprayed and buffed so I can do some before and after shots and put them in a decent post for you guys. But, here is a sneak peak on the progress to wet your appetite! For reference the paint is a Honda pearl grey with 10% extra black added. It has some insetting colours in the mix, including white pearl. Unfortunately you cannot catch the effect on camera. I decided to obviously go with a gloss finish rather than the factory satin finish and I think it was the right decision. Just bear in mind that these parts have not been buffed yet and just straight off the gun. When i get a minute ill go back and relink all the broken pics on the other pages too. https://onedrive.live.com/download?resid=9914933903657a0c!7567&authkey=!AM7lrBwtA3kezDI&v=3&ithint=photo%2cjpg[/img] https://onedrive.live.com/download?resid=9914933903657a0c!7565&authkey=!AAX3ETyjI_CkRwo&v=3&ithint=photo%2cjpg[/img] https://onedrive.live.com/download?resid=9914933903657a0c!7566&authkey=!AGwEQ54LQ0Onxg0&v=3&ithint=photo%2cjpg[/img] https://onedrive.live.com/download?resid=9914933903657a0c!7568&authkey=!AEo5t45vkDgIOKE&v=3&ithint=photo%2cjpg[/img] https://onedrive.live.com/download?resid=9914933903657a0c!7569&authkey=!AI3UQGKCO8ORnP8&v=3&ithint=photo%2cjpg[/img] Quote
