Administrators gav240z Posted June 8, 2013 Administrators Posted June 8, 2013 What colour was she from the factory out of curiosity? I always like the idea of going back to the factory colour, but perhaps in a nicer 2-pac? That blue G-nose Z also really makes me want to convert my car to the ZG look. Quote
Roberto Posted June 8, 2013 Author Posted June 8, 2013 What colour was she from the factory out of curiosity? I always like the idea of going back to the factory colour, but perhaps in a nicer 2-pac? The paint code sticker was useless by the time I got my zed, but by looking under the carpets, I am 99% sure it was originally 115 Blue Metallic as shown in pic below. I have considered going back to original colour, but I don't want to go metallic this time. Quote
Riceburner Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 Rust repairs coming along nicely. I thought Z's weren't painted inside and that's why they rust so badly, seems yours is? I thought that pic was a good comparison because it had similar styling to your car, wheels, flares, mirrors, but minus the G-nose. I think any blue is good, it's one of the classic colors that blends with old and new. Rudolfs 2+2 color is the one I was refering to, it's one of the best Z colors IMO. Quote
thriller Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 Gareth I think the early cars were not painted inside, probably late 71 onward I'm pretty sure they all had some kind of interior coating? Roberto, 2 stage acrylic can look really really good with a lot of buffing. For me the extra 'hardiness' of 2 pack didnt matter too much. Depends if you plan on leaving it parked under trees without washing it for weeks on weeks... Apparently acrylic is quite a bit more forgiving for a noob painter. Id have no worries about painting my car myself if I had chosen non metallic FWIW I reckon a really really really deep blue would look great. Tough choice. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted June 9, 2013 Administrators Posted June 9, 2013 I just love this 1. http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=9245.0;attach=36129;image Great colour. Quote
SS30RR Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 will you be sticking with the current wheel colour after the paint job? I think your car looks great as is.......definitely ticks call the boxes from what I can see. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted June 9, 2013 Administrators Posted June 9, 2013 I love this factory colour though. It's simply awesome. I like the Blue on Blue colour combo also, rocks the casbah! Quote
Roberto Posted June 9, 2013 Author Posted June 9, 2013 Thanks for posting the pics Tai. I have attached more pics of colours that are all on the table and floating around my head. Hate some of the cars, but not the colours Lightest to darkest that I will go. *cough* Vinyl wrap! *cough* What ?! Get a grip Simon Rust repairs coming along nicely. They sure are. Mick will need the roof soon (hint hint).... Apparently acrylic is quite a bit more forgiving for a noob painter. Id have no worries about painting my car myself if I had chosen non metallic Yep, that is one of the reasons I want to go a solid colour. The other is because it can look SO good. See examples below! will you be sticking with the current wheel colour after the paint job? I think your car looks great as is.......definitely ticks call the boxes from what I can see. Thanks, but car needs a solid colour, with no purple overtone. Yes, the plan is not to change the wheel colour. Your car is definitely box ticking material. I love this factory colour though. It's simply awesome. That car does look the goods...... Quote
Roberto Posted June 21, 2013 Author Posted June 21, 2013 More progress from Mick this week. Floor pans and rails repaired Quote
Roberto Posted June 21, 2013 Author Posted June 21, 2013 And finally, my zed no longer has a sunroof........ Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted June 21, 2013 Administrators Posted June 21, 2013 LOL @ the Mick was here image. Classic. Mick is a true artist with panel work. As they say in Ireland fair play! Quote
Fairlady Z Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 Yay now you got a targa lol. Or what they call them on supras aero top. Frame looks damn good unlike what i found on the early girl only rust held by overspray no metal. Keep it up guys Quote
Roberto Posted October 24, 2013 Author Posted October 24, 2013 Well after getting my zed back home with all the metal work completed by Mick, my zed has stayed in a dormant state till the last couple of weeks. I am very happy with the look of the new roof and now it is time to do a complete bare metal respray at home. Any tips along the way are more than welcome. No blasting on this one. Brumby strip disk, wire wheel and paint stripper in a painfully slow process. I have already stripped the inside and outside of the fenders and nose cones. As many of you know stripping tar/body deadener is a PITA. I will POR-15 the inside of the fenders and nose cones as I am totally sold on this stuff. Now back to continue stripping the rest of the zed ! Quote
Scoota G Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Those nylon stipping drill attachments from Bunnings work excellent for around the door jambs. How many coats are on it? Looking the goods by the way, that roof looks very familiar! Quote
ZED83 Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Had fun cutting that roof off the doner car. :'( It's looking really good Roberto, much better now with the sun roof gone Are you staying with the same colour? Quote
260DET Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 For painting at home don't dismiss using acrylic, it can come up really nice if the preparation is done properly. Quote
Roberto Posted October 24, 2013 Author Posted October 24, 2013 How many coats are on it? Too many. Original paint plus 2 re sprays worth. Last one was by my brother and me 15 years ago and we used 2 pac primer. The paint stripper barely gets through half of it at at time. Had fun cutting that roof off the doner car. Are you staying with the same colour? Thanks for the help Owen. I won't be going the same colour. I am thinking lighter...... For painting at home don't dismiss using acrylic, it can come up really nice if the preparation is done properly. Yes, acrylic it will be...... Quote
Fairlady Z Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 Awesome roberto. Though dont be silly using acrylic. A. Old tech B. not robust C. I dont know about u but polishing sucks I keep hearing this 2pk harder to paint??? Who says it? If anything its easier. Just need cleanish premises so no dust particles. If u need ccontact for paint let me know. 2pk also lot cheaper than acrylic. Also modern 2pks are not worse than acrylic in poison aspect. Dont make the mistake going acrylic roberto i beg you. Quote
