FLEXZED Posted June 6, 2010 Author Posted June 6, 2010 Thanks John i am sure my RB30 motor will put out enough horses to keep me happy just thought i was on a roll and the car been on a rotissere WHY not weld everywhere, i know it overkill but it was enjoyable of course you can ride shotgun if you can handle my driving ;) Loui Quote
zzzzed Posted June 6, 2010 Posted June 6, 2010 are you welding with out a mask in that first photo? Nice job mate that shold stop a bit of torque twist Quote

Nice job mate that shold stop a bit of torque twist Welding without a mask have down many years ago and learnt my lession, never again, i was prepin for welding in that pic it better stop the twist i have a bit more to do but ran out of wire to finish last night thanks Loui Quote
PeterAllen Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 Loui There is a new thread on HydridZ which raises an interesting point about stitch welding an S30. At the bottom of the front strut tower there is about 30mm of inner guard before it joins the front rail. If you have a stiff tower and rail it could mean flexing of the inner guard at that point. I haven't thought it through fully as yet but it might be prudent to weld some gussets to join the tower to the rail. When combined with a brace across the tower tops it creates a full circle of support around the engine. The new rails limit a spiral twist of the whole shell but they don't really stop twisting between the engine bay and the firewall. Also while you have it on the rotisserie you might want to consider laying some reinforcement over the rails where the cross-member is attached. I made mine out of 2mm sheet. I'll bring it along tonight for you to look at. Quote
RB30X Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 are you welding with out a mask in that first photo? He's grinding, you only need ear plugs for that. Nice job by the way. Looks like you could throw anything (rwhp) at it now. Quote
zzzzed Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 ahhhh it looks like the welding hand peace. I saw the argon bottle and just figured it was the welder even still safety glasses might have been a good idea Quote

zzzzed Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 i once had a metal splinter pulled out of my eye. and i was wearing safety glasses. It was not a pleasant experience Quote
FLEXZED Posted June 7, 2010 Author Posted June 7, 2010 same here mate, and the doc had to use a syringe tip to scrap it out, was painful Loui Quote

Brabham Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 Hey Loui what is required to engineer a zed with an RB30/26? I imagine the brakes would need to be upgraded, what brakes are you running? Are there any other things you need to change aside from reinforcing the chassis? Also how are you going to do the tailshaft/diff and driveshafts? Cheers. Quote
FLEXZED Posted June 9, 2010 Author Posted June 9, 2010 Hey Brabham RB 30 implant is ok as long as the requirements below are met. Basiccally brake upgrade, my front set up is 300zx vented disc's with hilux 4 pot calipers rears are 300zx disc's with 180sx calipers with a hand brake set up.1" patrol master cylinder is required, also the engineer stated i should weld in a 2mm plate inside the fire wall where the brake booster is connected so there is no flex oringal R200 rear set up is ok Loui Quote
MaygZ Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 Looking good Loui. Hurry up 'cause I want to borrow your rotissorrie! :-) Quote
FLEXZED Posted June 9, 2010 Author Posted June 9, 2010 Thanks mate Its yours when i am done, as long as you keep post funny comments ;) Loui Quote
FLEXZED Posted June 20, 2010 Author Posted June 20, 2010 Hey everyone, Just got afew things done over the past week. Some more strengthening and some rust repairs behind the sill panel. Here is the sill panel. Cut the rust out and made some new panels to replace it. Once they were done i brushed some Por15 over them to protect them until i get the final spray paint/coat. Rust: Repairs: Protection: Second of all came the strengthening. Peter Allen let me copy his U channel to strengthen the area around the engine crossmember. Once the RB30ET is sitting in the bay and i have an idea of space constraints. I will most likely add webbing running from this U channel to just passed the seam at the strut tower to reduce flexing of the inner guard panel. This picture shows where the webbing will run. Basically it will be a right angled triangle running from the rail to just before the guard comes to the curve. Thats all for now guys. Coming along nicely. Quote
reverendzed Posted June 20, 2010 Posted June 20, 2010 Great job Loui, you are putting together a Zed that will last another 30 years! Rev. Quote

Veloce Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 Lookin' good, i think beefing up the chassis rails is a good move on any Z that will get an RB transplant. I'll be keepin a close eye on this thread Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted June 25, 2010 Moderators Posted June 25, 2010 I'll be waiting for that youtube video of Loui's zed doing mid tens down the ¼! hehehe Quote

PeterAllen Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 Loui Have you thought about the fuel tank/cell mounts? Probably easier to do while the shell's on the rotisserie - I did mine this week. I'm still to finalise the shape of the tank and will wait until the exhaust is fitted. I have a cardboard mock-up to give the exhaust chaps some idea. Quote
