Sirpent Posted October 13, 2009 Author Posted October 13, 2009 UPDATE:Dropped into "Lurch Motors" Sunday and dropped off my front and rear suspension complete with Toyota Surf and R31 calipers, new Pugoet and R31 rotors and Ben should be packing and posting the coilover kit to Lurch sometime tomorrow, seems I have the later 260Z 55mm strust tubes, hopefull will have pics up soon once Lurch has everything back together, hopefully he will take some pics of the conversion as these are apparently his first 55mm conversions. Cheers John P.S. His Mom makes a mean Anzac cookie and cup of coffee ! Quote
RB30X Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 Well hopefully one of the employees at Lurch Motors take some pics of the strut conversion for us all to see. Quote

MMMMMMMMMMM, I did spot from the corner of my eye a small bald bloke with a cockeyed look wearing a fur lined color black monk like habit checking us out as we discussed the job, suppose thats his apprentice, think he reffered to him as Festa ???? Hopefully he takes some. Quote
C.A.R. Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 It seems I have more company names than I can poke a stick at :-\ Anywho - front & rear brakes are disassembled & I have removed one drum backing off one of the rear struts to get measurements. I'll be dropping the parts off to the machinists tomorrow. Photos will be posted as developments happen... Quote

Just make sure Festa's pictures are clearer than the Kennedy assassination "Zapruder" pics, we want to see the details of your dirty deeds.....LOL Quote

C.A.R. Posted October 29, 2009 Posted October 29, 2009 Well things don't always go to plan, but I'm now on top of it all. Pic of an assembled rear strut (and my workshop is normally cleaner than showen). Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted October 29, 2009 Moderators Posted October 29, 2009 Hmm..have you been testing missiles as well? Did you mount the caliper at the 12' position Lurch? Quote
garvice Posted October 29, 2009 Posted October 29, 2009 Lurch, Do you have any travel with that strut setup? It looks like there is only an inch or two between the top spring perch and the threaded collar. Also the strut seems to be coming through very high. Or are you just showing how low they can go? Quote
C.A.R. Posted October 29, 2009 Posted October 29, 2009 Yes I did Dimitri - where are yours mounted? 9 O'clock? Garvice, I'm a little confused as to what you are trying to say? I don't think your looking at the photo carefully enough... There is plenty of travel with this setup - I have the spring sitting down near the bottom of the threaded sleeve showing how far down it can be wound. I couldn't keep the damper compressed for the photo, so that's why it's at full height. Quote
RB30X Posted October 29, 2009 Posted October 29, 2009 I'd guess that strut is keeping it up like that and when under a car it will compress down?? Opps Lurch already replied. Interesting you bring up the caliper position on the 'clock' as I've been looking at several types of calipers to upgrade mine and different models position theirs differently. I guess it all depends on how the suspension is built to handle the braking load of the spinning rotor etc......maybe we need a seperate thread for this discussion. Quote

What I was trying to say is that with the spring at its lowest setting, it looks like there is only about 1-2 inches of travel. I was just expecting a sorter threaded section/strut and more travel at the low setting. Sure you know what your doing though. Quote
zed240au Posted October 29, 2009 Posted October 29, 2009 i had my calipers mounted at the 12 worked fine till i sectioned struts and put coil overs on first drive car was handling terrible when i looked under body was sitting on hand brake side mechanism of caliper so moved calipers to 3 oclock postion much better suspension lol Quote

Sirpent Posted November 2, 2009 Author Posted November 2, 2009 OK, well its been a long weekend for more reasons than one, as you have all probably read in previous posts, I came up with the idea of using Plasti-Dip to coat the undercarriage, its the stuff used to insulate tools and comes in a liquid form that you can either dip, brush or spray on. So Saturday Im all ready to use the stuff which cost me $400.00, and I have this Eureka moment, "Hay rather than use this, why dont I use Poly-Urethane Sikaflex thinned down to a sprayable consistency" "EUREKA !" Dont ask me why but the next thing I knew I was emptying 2 tubes into a 4 litre can and thinning it down with thinners, poured it into the gun and started to spray it, let me tell you the result was incredible, it looked fantastic, you could see it was nice and thick, and the finish was a smooth consistent satin like look. I did half the floor pan and retired for the evening to my Abode extremely impressed, I even rang Lurch in my excitement to tell him of this ground breaking find. Next day I go to take a look at my handy work, it had dulled off and still looked incredible (took pics I will post on Wednesday, left the transfer cable for the Camera at work) but then in shook I realised it wasnt setting, the thinners had destroyed its ability to harden, so 12 litres of thinners later courtesy of Super Crap Auto and a dozen tea towles and about 12 hours of rubbing and washing it all off, I ended up back where I started. What was I thinking? Anyhow, I did the passanger skirt today in the Plasti-dip, and the result ???? Very Impressed, I will let the pics speak for themselves when I post on Wednesday, I used 1 400ml can for the entire passanger skirt/wheel well area, and I have 9 cans left, thinned down 3;1 with regular thinners it goes on very easily straight onto bare metal, filler and the urethane beads I ran over all the pan seams, and yes, it did set in about 30 minutes. If you have a EUREKA moment yourself, share it first, theres probably a Moron like yours truley whose already tried it and learnt the hard way, then again, if it did work................LOL Cheers John Quote
C.A.R. Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA....................................................!!! Quote
Sirpent Posted November 3, 2009 Author Posted November 3, 2009 Just finished the Plasti-Dip finish on the floor pan and managed to take a few pics with the phone camera. The pan is now rubberised so to say and its strange to the touch, feels rubbery and I think apart from the sealing qualities, the sound deadening ability should help the end internal accoustics. The color is actually a very blackish grey. Enjoy, and feel free to ask questions if you are interested. Cheers John Quote
RB30X Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 Looks good. So you obvioulsy thinned it down and sprayed it on. Quote
Sirpent Posted November 3, 2009 Author Posted November 3, 2009 Looks good. So you obvioulsy thinned it down and sprayed it on. Yeah started off with a 3;1, but then kept thinning it as I found that at that ratio it tended to fur up as the material started to set off before it hit the surface due to the air velocity / temp leaving the spray nozle. I eventually got to almost a 1:1 mixture of acrylic thinners to the plasti-Dip. End result was great with no runs. Quote
FLEXZED Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 hey mate looks awesome stupid question but would the heat from exhaust and box affect it loui Quote
Sirpent Posted November 3, 2009 Author Posted November 3, 2009 hey mate looks awesome stupid question but would the heat from exhaust and box affect it loui Good question Loui, and thanks for the question. The material sheet states it is heat resistent to up to 150 degrees of direct heat, so Id put it in the same boat as many of the other underbody finishes available. Cheers John Quote
