So does anyone know what the Pickles 240z went for?

http://www.pickles.com.au/cars/item/-/details/CP-09-73--Datsun--240Z--Coupe--2-Seats--2-Doors/103284237

I looked at it for someone here is what I saw / thought.

Video was a rush last minute job as I had to run due to the impending storms over Sydney, my g/f was at the park with the dog and I had to go get her before the rain came in. The reason the video's are split is because she was calling and my phone stopped recording at that time. I actually thought I was still filming for a while (when it was calling) before I realised.

My overall impression was good car, 1 spot of rust bubble on the roof. I couldn't see under the car completely since it wasn't on a stand but I thought it looked like it was structurally sound.

The other thing I forgot was to check for matching #s - I think it had an L26 block, but I got distracted right before I was going to confirm.

Did anyone else take a look?

Really curious what price it fetched.

Both of those were posted a couple of pages ago, but what scares me with the red 1 is that chassis rail photo. It looks like a relatively rust free car on the surface but then you see that! I dunno but I suspect it's got quite a bit of 'hidden' rust.

I don't know about you guys, but I just watched this auction end and I feel this car went for a bargain price!

http://www.ebay.com/itm/231180130886

I was about to bid myself and bring it to Australia...

When compared to recent sales in Aus it seems to be a good buy.

Having said that I am not across values in the US market, maybe there is merit in looking to importing, if you can live with LHD.

The US market always seems cheap, but I was watching another car in LA that was restored (in red a 73 model) and it went for $15 - $16k from memory. It was repainted, personally I'd prefer a survivor like this, I feel they are more 'honest'. I personally don't think drive config is a big deal and you don't have to convert with historic models like this but others might find it a deal breaker.

Still it could always be converted.

I guess I look at it from the flip side, if you restore an Australian market car and have to deal with major bodywork and sourcing original pieces etc.. you could end up spending much more than that.

^^ Yes I think so... I recall seeing a LHD Green 240z like that on Gumtree before.

I actually said to my g/f that I thought it would go up to about $22-23k. It was a good car - no rust apart from that spot in the roof which had some minor bubbling (I couldn't climb under it or get it on ramps etc..). Not sure when the car was restored but the paint was still good. It did look a lot nicer in person (the colour) and the wheels I didn't mind since they were looking as they should - I have the same set on my Gold 70 240z and after seeing that car I was thinking I could live with them if they were painted up and presented right (at least until I can afford something nicer).

The interior was for me the biggest let down, the re-trim job was average at best and not my cup of tea. They replaced the headliner with some god awful stuff - would have been better to keep the door cards, carpets and my favorite the diamond vinyl trim etc.. all stock.

The auto was a let down (well for me I don't like them in Z's) but mechanically she sounded sweet and it had the original exhaust manifold - which is quite rare for a 240z!

When I fired it up a few young fellas with their father (I think) were around it and comparing it with early Mustangs etc.. the sound of the L6 firing up put a big smile on their faces and mine.

There were some other little customisations that were not my bag, but mostly easily reversed.

The rear hatch and passenger door alignment were a little out, I thought it was possible the rear had a minor tap at some stage due to the placement of the paint chip in the wheel well (as if something had pushed it or stretched it causing it to flake off ). However the paint inside the car under carpets etc.. looked original and even though the brown is probably not the best looking colour on the 240z, the fact that a previous owner kept it original at time of it's last repaint said something about the way it had been looked after.

At the end of the day, this was a car you could get in and enjoy right away. You could easily spend that money restoring a rust bucket and not even be done with the body work yet. I'm sure a few people here could verify that claim also!

Unfortunately I didn't get to check for matching numbers but I don't think it matters that much, well at least the price reflects that.

The 240z didn't look out of place in amongst all the other high end cars in there and I was kind of happy to see an old brown 'Datsun' in amongst them.

Best of luck to the new owner and I hope they join up here and share it with us. Be a shame for it to be hidden away again.

1974 240Z For Sale Adelaide, LHD.

I looked at this car last year when a guy had it for sale in the southern suburbs.

I am guessing he sold it, now it is for sale again.

Was pretty original, had service history, original sales books, and from memory proof of a long ownership.

Might have even been original 1 owner before emigrating to Oz.

Paint average, had had an L28 in it but was recently changed to L24 to satisfy rego in SA from memory.

Gumtree: http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/victor-harbor/cars-vans-utes/1973-datsun-240z-coupe/1042006564

Pretty good body, had some bog, in the side somewhere...  my memory... it was a while ago alright. :-\

I offered 12k but not accepted.

Was asking 13.5k

Now $15k

Check it out.

I was thinking the same thing Peter, but you could always sell those mesh Recaro's off - plenty of people like those old Recaro style seats and you could use vinyl paint to re-do the dash in black and then over time source door cards etc...

Converting to manual is the bigger issue I think ;).

Gav,

Good points re the interior, nett cost probably wouldn't be that great.

SBC350 with a manual behind it ? with that much torque a good auto can be a better answer, although I would nearly always go the manual  ;D. Although after going for a run with Scoota in Lucinda the other day I was rather impressed by the kitted auto.

The real question is, as always, how good is the body and how much rust ..

Time will tell if it is good value.

Straight off my phone! ;D

If someone on the site buys and wrecks it, can I have first dibs on the interior pls..

Looks very original, be a shame to wreck that. Looks like a 72/73 model.

Where did you find it?
