Hello all.

Not sure if it is considered bad forum etiquette to sign up and try to sell something in your first post, but at least I'm not flogging junk ;-)

I've had this engine wrapped up in gladwrap for a few years now and I really need to shift it to make room. I hope to sell it and the rest of the running gear as I've bought an LS and am thus going the V8 route.

The engine started with the triple 45's, and cylinder head. The ported head didn't even get to do 500 kilometers on the road before I pulled the engine out to recondition the bottom end. I got the motor mostly bolted back together and that is as far as it got.

As can be seen from the photos, the head has had a lot of work done to it and is pretty thoroughly ported, OS valves, etc. The camshaft is from Watson Racing. I can't remember the specs ATM; I've got the card in a drawer somewhere and have to hunt for it, but it's fairly wild. This head was assembled properly; custom lash pads were actually made to retain the correct rocker arm geometry. Is fitted with a brand new adjustable cam sprocket and chain (Rollmaster brand IIRC). The head has been bolted to the block with ARP studs.

As for the bottom end, it's had all the usual done: acid dipped, bored (with a torque-plate), honed, washed, blah, blah. Pistons are brand new (of course) Hypertec which have been individually fly cut for both in and ex valve clearances. Crank has been machined. All mains and big-end bearings new.

I have everything to complete the engine even if it's not all currently shown in the photographs (Still have to unbox) - rocker cover, oil pump, two spare sumps, etc.

The triple 45 Webers were bought brand new and have seen no more than 10,000 kilometers of use. They are currently fitted with 36mm chokes and I have a set of 32's on the shelf. The intake mainifold is by Redine (not the best) but it has been thoroughly ground out match-ported to the head. The power target for this engine was ~270 hp.

I also had a 5sdp 240Z gearbox put together / rebuilt for this thing by Datsport. It is internally mint and has only done a few thousand kilometers on the road after being done (was rebuilt with good bits taken from several donor boxes). This is also for sale, but no photos ATM as I have to pull it out of the junk pile. I'd be happy to crack it open for inspection for any prospective buyer. Along with the gearbox also goes an essentially new Extreme brand heavy duty clutch.

I also have two R180 differentials for sale that are mechanically A1. One is a 4.65:1 ratio and the other 3.9:1. As per the gearbox these are currently buried in crap and I'll be more than will to crack open for internal inspection.

And I had a nice/complete 2.5" custom exhaust system made for the car (260Z couple) which too has only seen a few thousand kays of use. I don't need that anymore either so It's for sale along with the extractors.

I'm located near Adelaide. It should go without saying that all of the above owes me a fair bit of coin, so I'm open to decent/fair offers. I'll get around to pulling out and photographing the other stuff in a few days if there is any legitimate interest at all.

Cheers,

Glen

Yep I missed that when I approved it, please list a price.

OK, no worries. Had to have a think about it. I've been out of the Datsun scene for ten years, dunno how any of this stuff has appreciated or not.

That head on its own with all the porting, machine work and parts didn't leave me with any change out of $3500 and that was a few years ago now. I'll take no less than $4500 for the complete engine minus the intake and carbs. $1500 for the intake carbs complete.

I'll sell the complete 2.5" exhaust system (made by Exhaust Technology) with extractors for $100.

The going price for an R180 diff 12 years ago was $500. I'll take $500 each for my 3.9 and 4.625.

Dunno what a good working order 240Z 5spd is worth. ~12 years ago I was told by a wrecker that they wouldn't sell one pulled from a wreck for less than a grand. Any opinions on that?

Sound reasonable?

I think you will struggle for that sort of money for the long motor unless you have at least one of the following A: dyno figures B: bench readings for head flow C: extensive pictures of head work and block prep.

I am interested but for that sort of money would need some evidence and some numbers.

As mentioned above, for your engine price, I recommend you get a good catalogue of pics together to itemise the parts. but your price sounds quite reasonable.

Diffs might be priced a little high if they are single spinners but if they are lsd then double your figure.

Gearbox sounds very cheap to me if it has had a full rebuild.

Good luck with the sales

Alright guys, thanks for the replies. The differentials are indeed non limited slip. I Have a few more pics of the head which I've attached. Don't have flow figures and can't supply dyno figures for a long engine.

The porting and cylinder head assembly was done by Barry Burns (Baz) of Datsport. From the photos I think It's pretty clear that these have had a fair bit of work done. The valves are as big as can fit and from the complete disappearance of the injector notches on the intake ports and the amount of valve stem guide exposed inside the port you can see that they've been taken out pretty much as far as they can go. The bottom end owes me over 2k in parts and machining. If anyone would like to inspect the bores and the fly-cut pistons I guess I could pull the head off.

The exhaust and extractors will go to Jeff43 unless he changes his mind.

Sorting through my junk, I also have these 260Z Hitachi SU carbs, which I haven't yet managed to let myself throw into the bin. Are these sought after nowadays at all? I know back in the day they were considered disposable junk and 240Z SU's were a popular swap if you had a 260. Many moons ago they ran OK for me after they were gone through and the power valve diaphragms replaced. Made a stonking 78rwkw on a bog stock L28! I cable-tied Weber socks with cut down springs to the intake ports. I haven't ran these carbs on a motor for 14 years now, so I of course cannot make any promises as to their current internal condition. If they're still worthless I might just dangle them with a length of wire from the ceiling as a garage ornament, LOL.

That Burns built head will be very good.

He has been around a long long time, and knows his stuff.

In SA t was either Pete Hall, or Barry Burns, you went to, to get good stuff done.

FWIW, i recently sold at $7500 a RTA complete long motor, built to circuit race spec, forged etc etc, lightened etc etc, head xtensively modded etc, no inlet/exhaust. What you are asking s not unreasonable.

Anyone who knows their shizzle, and understands componentry will see the value, without the need ror "dyno" numbers.

Thanks mate, I was thinking the same. You couldn't go out and get the same built for $4500.

I agree with Dat2kman. Having recently priced similar gear, $4500 is a very good price for something well built. If I weren't already too far in to turn back, I'd be all over this. Good luck with the sale.

Looks the goods, valves on exhaust side need a little more unshrouding. Don't separate as it will de- value  your engine and regardless of goodies inside it will be hard to sell. Good luck with sale and sure it will go in time. Try posting on multiple sites and with person who ported head for you.

Hello all,

So far the only parts I've sold are the exhaust and extractors, so here is some further detail and pictures. I pulled the head off the motor to demonstrate that the bottom end has inside what I said it does. To re cap this is a freshly bored and honed, stock stroke L28. Bores are 1.5mm ( approx 60 thou) over size. All pistons have been fly cut for valve clearance. I've looked everywhere for the specification card for the camshaft but it looks like I have probably lost it, but I know (90% sure) from memory that the timing spec is either 78-35-35-78 or 78-38-38-78. I can't remember lift exactly, I'd have to measure it.

The Weber carbs are Spanish-made 45DCOE152's. Note the modified intake manifold and significantly improved linkage setup - throttle synchronization between carbs is achieved via adjustment screws.

I am willing to separate the components:

The Webers and intake manifold complete: $1500

The head only: $3000. There is ~$2000 worth of hand porting in this head alone.

The complete bottom end (minus head and carbs) including everything that came off the complete motor: $1500.

Cheers,

Glen

Oh, just found this in the pile. This was thrown in with my 260Z when I bought it back in 1998. I make no guarantees as to its functional condition. $30.
