Iceberg Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 Hi, As per title, I can't find a radiator shroud for my 260z 2 seater. I am so close to RWC but it is missing the radiator shroud. If anyone has spare or could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. Cheers Iceberg Quote
my_mad_z Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 If I had one, I'd give it to you. I passed roadworthy without a radiator shroud; I'm surprised they're pinging you on a radiator shroud! I just checked VS126 - Roadworthy requirements, and there's no mention of it in there. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted August 19, 2015 Administrators Posted August 19, 2015 What year is your car? I don't think any AU delivered S30z's came with a radiator shroud? At least I didn't see any 240z's delivered this way. Quote
chris240 Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 Do you mean the 200 mm long rolled bit that is tacked to the top of the radiator or some mystery plastic fully encased shroud of Turin ? Quote
sydney mike Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 I think Iceberg means the whole plastic one like below: Quote
C.A.R. Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 I'm after one as well - as per Mike's photo^ Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted August 19, 2015 Administrators Posted August 19, 2015 Doesn't MSA have them? http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/CTGY/classic15f Quote
gilltech Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 I didn't think Aus & NZ cars had them? Strange, you'd think for Aus it would be essential... 280ZXs did, maybe fit a 280zx rad & shroud? I tried a 280ZX shroud on my 260 rad though but the fixing points don't line up. Quote

There's one on my '77 260. A fan shroud has been a rego requirement in NSW for years, Quote
GongZ Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 I just did some searching and reading up on this issue, and found some issues to be considered. MSA sells a "Radiator Shroud, 70-73 240Z" "lightweight fiberglass" "reproduction of the heavy, factory-option metal unit" for US$84.95. They list genuine Nissan 260Z upper (US$91.58) and lower (US$43.70) radiator shrouds as not currently available (= discontinued by Nissan). I think these are the plastic version as shown in Mike's photo. I also read these two topics; http://www.zcar.com/forum/10-70-83-tech-discussion-forum/33252-240z-fan-shroud.html http://www.classiczcars.com/topic/25320-install-of-new-msa-radiator-shroud/ Which, in summary, say that a shroud helps cooling significantly, but can be a pain to fit and remove, and usually needs some 'fettling' to make sure that it doesn't flex and hit the fan at speed (unless its a factory metal 240Z shroud). Iceberg Posted August 19, 2015 Author Posted August 19, 2015 Thanks guys for the healthy discussion. Gav and Lurch, since you both are a bank of Z knowledge. So do we think that our Australian Delivered Zs came with the radiator shroud? I could argue the point that they never had it to start with, however original radiators do have holes for securing the shroud. This could be explained most part were interchangeable between LHD and RHD. MSA does not have shrouds for sale for the 260Z. Another option may be 2+2 shroud as radiators should be the same. I am so close to the RWC but this could really hold me up. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted August 20, 2015 Administrators Posted August 20, 2015 It could have been a later S30z thing, but 240z's didn't have them. Certainly most 260z's didn't. However it depends on your year of car? It certainly isn't a bad idea anyway for improved cooling, coupled with a proper undertray and rubber seal along the top of the radiator support etc.. Quote
Iceberg Posted August 20, 2015 Author Posted August 20, 2015 Hi Gav, My 260z 2 seat is 1975. I have new weather seal under the bonnet and i have restored the under tray. It really stays nice and cool now. But the real test will be summer days. However this shroud business is on the RWC list. I may have to argue that the car never came wit them in the first place. Administrators gav240z Posted August 20, 2015 Administrators Posted August 20, 2015 I may have to argue that the car never came wit them in the first place. I would try to suggest this, make them look up when the ADR for a required fan shroud comes in. My 75 2+2 had thermo fans fitted which did have shrouds but it never came that way obviously. That's another alternative I guess depending on how OEM you wish to stay. Quote
YosemiteZed Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 Gavin The fan shroud was installed in 260z The shroud was in two parts that screwed together and was supported by the radiator that encompassed the fan to the motor Nissan Part no 21476 N4200 for upper part shroud Nissan Part no 21477 N4200 for lower part shroud I was lead to believe these were installed on car fitted with AC to assist in improving airflow through the ac condensor that was installed in front of the radiator Cheers Phil Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted August 20, 2015 Administrators Posted August 20, 2015 Gavin The fan shroud was installed in 260z Well there ya go, I was wrong. I honestly never noticed this difference. It makes sense though especially in an aircon fitted car. I guess most owners removed them though and never put them back. Quote
Iceberg Posted August 20, 2015 Author Posted August 20, 2015 I'm after one as well - as per Mike's photo^ Ok now that we got to the bottom of it. Big thanks for everyone input and the part numbers. Lurch, Shrouds are available new from Nissan, $80 each for top and bottom. Next mission, find gearbox rebuild synchronizers. 1st gear feels like captain crunchy!. Quote
Iceberg Posted August 20, 2015 Author Posted August 20, 2015 Update. Just received a call from Nissan, they no longer can get the shrouds and will be refunding the money. Back to the drawing board. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted August 20, 2015 Administrators Posted August 20, 2015 I was surprised you could get them from Nissan. So not surprised to find out they can't get them for you. http://www.ebay.com/itm/78-DATSUN-280Z-RADIATOR-SHROUD-126355-/371062929866 Half of 1. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Datsun-260Z-280Z-radiator-fan-shroud-OEM-used-/381354026685 Quote
YosemiteZed Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 the first option is the correct unit This one below is not the right one for a 260z Half of 1. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Datsun-260Z-280Z-radiator-fan-shroud-OEM-used-/381354026685 Cheers Quote
webmanic Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 I thought these were not standard for the 260Z in Australia? It wasn't on my old 260z anyway. Nonetheless I bought a plastic 2 piece one off ebay US for my 240z but decided instead to buy an original one piece metal shroud that came with the early models in the US. Plastic shrouds come up on ebay regularly on the US market if you keep an eye on it. PS: My spare plastic shroud is still in the US which I possibly could sell for $70 + shipping. I also noticed a current Gumtree ad whereby someone in Altona was selling a stack of parts for the zed and there was a shroud in the picture of his items. (could be for a 280zx) Quote
GongZ Posted August 27, 2015 Posted August 27, 2015 (edited) This Gumtree ad (Adelaide Hills); http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/crafers/engine-engine-parts-transmission/datsun-nissan-240z-260z-280zx-parts/1087590999 includes "280zx radiator, viscous fan and shroud $80" I am aware that the 280ZX radiator is bigger than the 240Z/260Z items but the shroud looks like it might be a 2-piece 260Z version. *Edit - I have just sent the seller a question about this - stay tuned *Edit # 2 - reply was - "Both radiator shroud and fan are definitely from my old 280zx that i tore apart for my 240z project" Edited August 27, 2015 by GongZ Quote
