Hey guys, I've been looking into a solution for my roof skin which has a massive hole from one of the fold back tarp  type sun/moon roofs. I don't believe it's possible to weld in new metal as the surrounding metal is buckled and the hole it self is possible to big to fill with a bit of metal. I then looked into shipping one from America but shipping was gonna be a killer(still might do it if only option). I was then thinking about a composite material like Carbon fiber but can't locate a mold for a 240z roof. If anyone knows of one or someone who will build me one ,I would love to know

Thanks

Ben at Otomoto did a carbon roof skin I think. Give him a call perhaps?

Otherwise Ashley at Moorabbin Autospares has a 260z 2 seated that he might cut up. It has perfect floors but battery tray, windscreen scuttle, doors, hatch and a few other places are shot. Looks like salt air killed it in all unusual areas. Roof looks solid. I told him I would be interested in roof if he parts it out but give him a call anyway.

Yeah my old man gave the bloke Ben got his off a call but they've sold there mold and doesn't have the buyers number. I could be interested in the one Ash has if there's no sunroof, should I give him a call or should my dad call in tomorrow as he's going to Moorabbin for stock for his business?

Thanks

Call in and see Ash. Depends how much you're willing to spend on a good roof. I don't think he will chop it up for a couple of hundred bucks though. Roof is pretty mint looking. Hence I wanted it but I already have a roof skin in ok shape. I just know how much work is involved in preparing panels now ;). Hence $800 + for a good roof skin starts to seem reasonable.

Ash will be at the shop so go see him and the car.

By the way the original roof skin part no. from Nissan is 73102-E4100

My search reveals nothing in stock. Can't hurt to ask a Nissan dealer though?

My dad called in to see ash, said he's a great bloke and they had a good chat. He's not sure on cutting it up so I don't think that's the one I'll get. That's fine with me as it would pain me to know that a RHD 2 seater s30 was cut up and I'll rather see ash stick it through and enjoy that car. Think my next best option is America? Unless I can find a mold for a composite material roof in Aus ? I like the America idea as I plan to bring over more 240z's in the future and would be a good learning experience. Anyone ever brought a roof over ? Things I should look out for / tricks I should know ?

Hi mate,

See here:

Then you could try going through these guys.

http://usatoaus.com/

I tried to ask them about a quote on a roof and nobody got back to me. I would call them.

http://usatoaus.com/contact.html

I will be surprised if by the time you ship the roof to a depot, import it, pay duty on it, get it to your home. If it comes in under $1000 - I'll applaud you if you can do it.

I was going to go down that route but came across a 2 seater roof for $200, it's not perfect but it will get me further than my current sunroof and to be honest it is probabyl more expensive to repair the existing roof than find another even at $1000 and the end result will likely be better.

I'd ask someone like Rob at Z-Factory (http://zrestorations.com.au/) what it would cost to patch up your existing roof. Anything can be repaired and an entire roof could be fabricated it's not that difficult to shape the metal with the right tools and Rob has lots of experience restoring Z's. He is in Moorabbin also and you can see some of the work he's done on the website.

Someone like Rare Spares needs to do roof skins, it seems it was a very Australian thing to put sunroof's in Z's. It's not as common in US 240z's to see them.

Hi Z fans,
I thought I'd revive this discussion.
My Z car was recently vandalised and someone stomped in the roof.  :(  It's an early model shell I was preparing to restore that was accessed whilst in storage.

I've followed the advice here and come up empty.  Does anyone have any ideas where I could get a roof cut, skin or carbon fibre roof skin.

Thank you in advance
John

There is a few creases there.  I haven't been able to have a close look. What do you think?

Pop it back out, will need a competent panel beater to heat shrink it, but wouldn't replace the whole roof. Would repair in situation.

Haha! Excellent! Gets them going every time! ;D

Garn, admit it, ensconced in a Zed at speed on a fine sunny day, with the windows wound down and the sunroof open, listening to that straight 6, is a very nice place to be...

(Oh and BTW I just love Monty Python...) !!!

I'd be happy to donate my sunroof in HS30 00150.

Although @C.A.F.may want to fill it for a customer in future as it appears to be a very good rust free roof otherwise.

I don't like the way it stands out and ruins the clean lines. I don't mind the sunroof that sits flush and looks like the roof (solid).

'Clean lines'? Far too plain and 'clean' to my eye. I much prefer a Zed with bobtail, front spoiler, lowered with alloy wheels and yes a pop-up sunroof which when popped up it all looks the business. Form follows function. So I'm keeping my sunroof thanks, for me it makes the car! >:D See avatar.

I forgot to add that the pop-up sunroof is also a pop-out, as in the glass panel is removable. Bag it and stow it and one is part way to having a T-roof Zed. Which would be nice. FWIW, I do recall seeing photos of a custom T-roof S30 in a magazine a few years back..... And then there was also a station wagon.....

It's been in (is in) storage at the moment as my final restoration project.  Currently I'm doing up another Z (#366) so I'm also figuring out what I want to do with this.

When I first drove this thing it was an absolute rocketship. The (messy) car is complete and disassembled, the only thing missing is the motor, which I had and was damn interesting for an L24 (like really thin rings and a drilled block that allowed a dual feed oil pickup from one sieve, a modified sump to accommodate the hardware) when I rebuilt it and put it in a skyline I used to have, it revved so high.  That fat assed auto skyline had heaps of power with this thing's zed motor - alas to metal heaven it has gone.

My main focus has been to keep it dry and straight and it has mostly been that until recently.  I was gearing up to do work on it pre covid lockdown but I haven't been able to access it since lockdown started.  It's had a rallying history and the suspension and engine modifications show that - so does the replacement of both quarter panels.  The car is stripped of tar sheets ready for seam welding as I thought I'd tighten it up, remove the quarters and the cowl and strip it to bare metal, maybe cold gal the inside. I'm not sure, suggestions welcome on how to prep the body as I'm in the planning phase of the 48 resto (which includes sale as a potential option).

you could always cut it out and put a sunroof in it:)

How about I turn it into a convertible? I think that it would be really interesting ;)

I'm info gathering at this stage, assessing options for a project plan.

I appreciate you all being interested.
