Retro Z Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 Nobody seems to complain when a young bloke like me (28yo) cuts up these cars to distribute things like roofs, quarters, doors and other hard to find parts, but when someone else cuts into their own cars everyone has something to say. Because i do such things doesn't mean i have no respect to these cars, in fact i'm restoring one to (stock) and modifying another (flares) with over 5 years and an equivalent of a house deposit gone into them, with nearly every nut and bolt replaced with all work from rust repairs, engine work to paint done myself. I am also keeping the dream alive for others who need those hard to find parts who don't have the time, space, money or guts to cut up a rusty shell. I believe in doing so, i am also driving up the value of these cars . I agree most younger blokes have no idea about how to turn a spanner but not ALL. For the record flares and RB swaps have been done for decades as has 'stance'. And in Japan the rb swapped S30's are well embraced. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted October 24, 2014 Administrators Posted October 24, 2014 Yer righto.. i suppose the young fella with grinder and fitting a rb26 into it is me haha oh well its better situation for the car than the old gentleman leaving it outside in rain collecting dust, causing rust which is where the "young fella" found it in melbourne falling apart. For the record flares and RB swaps have been done for decades as has 'stance'. And in Japan the rb swapped S30's are well embraced. I feel like these are somewhat directed at me, so let me clarify. I have no problem with a modern (or any other engine swap) or even flared guards. However for me I'm trying to keep my cars as original as possible. So if I was to sell my 240z's I wouldn't like to see them cut up for flares and modified with an RB26 simply because I've gone to so much effort to keep them original. That is all I'm saying, however if I was to sell my car and someone was to pay me what I wanted for them then I couldn't really prevent them doing what they like with it. That's not to say I wouldn't disagree with it, but at the end of the day I'd find it a bit of a shame. No different than selling your house and seeing the new owners renovate it in a way that you don't necessarily agree with. When I first saw my 72 240z and it's dual exhaust I said to the owner it was like the old Safari Rally cars, he smiled and said that was exactly where he got the inspiration from. He then told me he had several people come look at the 240z and in his eyes they had no idea what they were looking at. I think in part the reason he was happy to sell me the car (and not just any Tom, Dick or Harry) was that I was an enthusiast with the same level of enthusiasm that he once had for it and the same kind of vision or interest in the period look. I'm sure everyone here would be a bit upset to see a Fairlady 432, 432-R or 240ZG modified or modernised as opposed to kept original and inline with it's original theme and I'm sure the current owners of such cars would be more inclined to sell them onto people who are intent on keeping them original. That's not to say that we don't appreciate a nicely modified example. Just that when you are a care taker of a vehicle for a certain period of time you want to pass that vehicle onto someone who will do the same with it if you are in a position to do so. I would prefer that an S30z hits the road again modified, cut up for flares etc.. than sit in a paddock and rot away because someone hasn't done anything with it for years. I am also a big fan of the rat rod style (within reason), so it's not about being a snob or tuning my nose up at any of these cars or ideas. As mentioned the less of these cars around that are left alone and original the more their values will increase. So by all means cut them up, slot RBs in them and do what you like. That's just how I feel about it and others are of course entitled to their own view points and can disagree with me. Quote
Mr260z Posted October 24, 2014 Author Posted October 24, 2014 Seems this thread went in a whole other direction, but it's fairly clear that most of you have no interest in car shows and don't think much of the bogans that do. We all choose to enjoy our cars differently and that's our own personal right. I don't judge anyone on what they do to there cars and the only ones I don't like seeing are those that are very clearly unsafe! My zed has been very well received at every show I go to and it makes me proud to own it and keeps me motivated to keep it neat and tidy. Car shows are a way I can enjoy my zed with the family too and love the fact that I have a 2+2 and am able to use and enjoy it for what it was designed for. Quote
lightmaster240z Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 Me I like to go to any car show the more the better and throw in swap meet and I'am in heaven. There is nothing better and rusty gold. Quote
DAT392 Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 I tend to go to a few car shows as well and find that it is a great way to enjoy our cars and to show them to others who have a common interest being old cars.Sure not everybody likes the same thing, but you,d be surprised at peoples interest in zeds. Some of the shows have taken us to places like hanging rock,Philip island(where we drove on the track),maroondah dam, moorabin airport etc etc where its ended up being a family thing as well. Also some of these shows have raised money for cancer and also community fund raisers so its not all bogan related. But mostly its a great excuse to look and talk about cars for a couple of hours and to drive my cars.So good on you mr260 Quote

I first started going to some shows recently after I joined a local club for club rego and didn't want to just be another club member abusing the system. I didn't realize just how much fundraising these meets do and how the community supports them. I'm also yet to see a Hoon. There's often plenty for the kids to do. I plan to use the shows as my main fundraiser for our SBR car for next year. ( feel free to throw some donations our way ) Quote

Good on you, enjoying your car in your way is what it's about surely. My bogan comment was directed at those who mostly favour non Japanese cars which is fine too, just different from what many Z car owners do. There is no right or wrong, to each their own which is what I understood this thread was about. Quote
Stivva Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 Car shows are hard for me to enjoy because I am a bit of intravert with new people so I kinda get to an event. Park up and hide somewhere. And most of my friends are not car guys so they dont enjoying coming with me to events. Quote

Most of my mates think I'm crazy for owning and driving the cars I have, especially my old Landrovers! And I definately just dissapear in a crowd where ever I go. But I go for me because I enjoy my cars and like looking at other peoples pride and joys. Quote
260DET Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 Well put your cars out there and show them, there is always someone up for a chat. It's the car way. Quote
lightmaster240z Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 well come to the bbq etc we wont bite Quote
gilltech Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 Well I thoroughly enjoy car shows, & appreciate the effort that goes into holding them. But nowadays I can't be bothered anymore with polishing up my own car & taking it, then hanging around for hours until finally able to slip away. Boring & a WOT. Always happy to support the car club or charity event at the gate, they need the income, but I'm over spending most of the day there. Much easier to just chuck the kids into the station wagon, look around the cars & browse the trade stands for an hour or two while the kids go nuts on the (hopefully if there's one) bouncy castle, stuff some food & ice creams into them, gather up our purchases then head off again. bluerat Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 I went to my first car show in many years last weekend at WTAC....and it was boring....sorry very boring. It was like walking back to your car after grocery shopping. Why would you do this? To me it's the same as that boring bit at a race meeting when you've been scrutineered and waiting for the drivers briefing, why would you do his all day? Is there something I'm missing in all this? OK, I guess that's why you won't see many Zed's at a car show. Quote

You can arrive when you like and leave when you like. I normally stick around long enough to have a good wonder around and then leave. I guess your average Zed driver is more interested in racing etc. that's great, the important thing is we all enjoy our Zeds. I'll still keep posting up some shows and trying to get a small group of Zeds all together for a short cruise to a show. Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted October 24, 2014 Moderators Posted October 24, 2014 Only reason I don't go to most shows is beause I don't hear of it beforehand! I attend as many as I can and most times again I'm the only Zed there. I've never heard any negative comments and most of the time get either positive or "thumbs up" from the public. Most common one I get is "such and such I knew had one of those too...beautiful car!". Most time it is a PITA to get the car ready the night before but for a good show, it is worth the effort. Also, everyone knows what they say about Aholes and opinions.... Quote

Besides, having the Zed sit in the sun cooking it's expensive semi slicks does not appeal at all. Quote
be-zed Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 You guys are going to love the Show & Shine segment of the Nissan Datsun Nationals for 2015 . Think 3 DAYS of Show and Shine. If you think you're going to be standing around bored , Think again. There will be more to do than you can poke a stick at . Yes you will have to move your cars around as some may have to go to competition events. But you can be there for as little (time) as you like or as long as you want. Datsuns are meant to be driven, not just looking at. You buy at Datsun especially a Z for one reason . To be seen in it: at speed or standing still it makes no difference. So Richard ,you bringing that V8 behemoth out on the 23 Nov for us to have a look at ? Quote
