Thankyou John....the job only took about an hour, and sorted out a problem that's plagued stereo installations on Z's forever...I glassed up the speaker mount today as well, so I will have some pics of the whole lot installed sans trimming by tomorrow afternoon.

Having looked at your project post and the HUGE mods you are doing, I imagine you will be thinking of power windows and those door locks that pull themselves closed!....I sure admire your desire to create a different car altogether.

Anyway, you can now route the wires nice and neatly, and you saw it first here on Auszcar!!!!

Cheers

To many mod's to list, but yes electric windows using a commodore set up (in the thread some way back) remote door locks yes, and door trims, well I'm thinking of isolating the inner door skins and then laying fiberglass over then to create molded skins then have them trimmed in the original Z pattern using "Alcantara" synthetic suede as used in Lambo's, it's readily available.

But no door speakers, as I have upgraded the heater fan already using a commodore blower set up which theres a vid of in my thread, Im deleting the side dash vents and will mount micro speakers there instead.

But those Lanos set ups you used are definately on the cards now.

Cheers

That sounds great John...I will look forward to seeing it all done...

I think you have got the speakers in a great place in the old air vents...that is probably the best place they could be....should sound great provided you have got the key tones covered in your mini speakers.

I am getting my door trims re-trimmed in synthetic leather with some stitching accents.

Cheers

Thanks Gareth! Cake or tarts....I'm happy either way!

As promised, here is a pic of the whole lot installed. The cable you can see actually connects the tweeter to the mid-range speaker, so that will sneak up between the door panel and the door trim to keep it out the way of the window mechanism. Where you can see the black texta dot on the edge of the trim is where I may put another trim clip in, but with the extra fibreglass stiffening the panel, there is no sign of it misbehaving even when you slam the door, so I reckon it is pretty good to go as-is.

Cheers lads

Well boys I am now through the dreaded VASS process to make all my mods legal. It wasn't that hard really. A few issues on wheel sizes, but otherwise all i had to do was fit inertia reel seatbelts, which was no big deal....although I did have to pull them apart and re-configure the belts...many thanks to Restraint Technology Australia for that!

With that done (especially the brake test which resulted in a few flat spots on the VERY old A032R tyres I had on it, I changed tyres.

After a bit of research, I decided I wanted to go with the Dunlop Direzza Z1 Star Spec, which conveniently is not offered here in Australia at Dunlop dealers. Fortunately for us Victorians, Stuckey's have come to the rescue and stock them. I had them fitted today, and all I can say is Holy Snappin Duck Shiv! What a transformation. They are quieter, more grippy when cold...it actually hooks up in second gear now. But most of all, the dartiness is gone from the ride. The tyres work 1000% better on rutted roads which used to make it dart all over the place. They are a much better road tyre (ie not saying the A032R were anything but great as a track tyre, which you would expect from an R spec tyre).

Anyway...all smiles now, and just tidying up a few bits and pieces before the Nationals next weekend.

Happy days and see you there ladies....

Good to hear Jamo.

And yes your old tyres were pretty sketchy when cold!

Yes there were dodge David! About as grippy as railway wheels!!!

Oh, I had a new prop-shaft built too, and that got rid of the high frequency buzz above 70mph...little by little I am getting the bugs out of it!

Well boys, I just got back from VicRoads, and the two fitty is now registered with the RB25 engine...final piece of the puzzle. The guy at VicRoads didn't know what it was, but loved it!

Something I wasn't aware of that you may want to know. When you turn up at VicRoads to have the  engine number inspection done, along with your VASS, you also need to have a receipt for the engine. I did have one, but it didn't have an engine number on it, so while I got away with it, if you haven't got a receipt at all, you need to fill out a Stat Dec to get them to accept the change.

Cheers

Congrats!

I thought with any engine number change you need a reciept; when I changed the engine number and engine type at Vicroads, the guy there didn't know the process (was with CH rego at the time). Went from L28 - RB25..now back to L24.

Hi Jamo.

How's the car going? Reliable? Quick? No issues? Have been following your build for a while and now I'm nearly ready to put my RB25 R34 Neo and gearbox in my 2+2. You early pics will come in very handy, as long as the 2+2 is similar to yours??

Hey Lars

Glad the thread has been some help. I have been very happy with the RB engine....it is a much nicer thing to drive, esp with power steering...that's the most 'feel-able' difference, but the RB engine is a fair bit smoother, and the transmission shift is a nicer thing too. Main issue I have had to track down is a driveline vibration. I have tracked it down to misaligned Uni's....I have maintained the same alignment as the L-series, which did not have vibration, but this setup has exhibited it. I have got onto a mate at Ford who works in their powertrain engineering and he has all the special tools to measure uni-joint angles... I will let you go what the solution turns out to be, but at this stage it's looking like the diff pinion needs to come down at the front a bit.

Cheers

Looks great, I love the paint colour in particular, really works well on the Z shape.
