Scoota G Posted August 17, 2012 Posted August 17, 2012 If the cruise to Dimitri's Alladins cave is before then i can come down and give you a hand sorting those Dellos if you like. Quote
nizm0zed Posted August 17, 2012 Posted August 17, 2012 The only thing that irks me slightly is that the caliper isn't centred on the rotor, it is my understanding that 260Z hubs and S12+8 brakes are supposed to line up perfectly, unless my memory is playing funny buggers on me... who knows. mine were the same when i bolted them on. i went to bunnings and bought some zinc plated washers, 4 on each side, 2 under each bolt and it sits almost perfectly centre. Oh goodness, please do check the write up in the brake section for info on the washers. No one wants to see you pop a piston out! Quote
nizm0zed Posted August 17, 2012 Posted August 17, 2012 eh, its all good, i'll just repaint any damage to the car... If the caliper is centralised on the rotor, it is less likely to pop a piston out, where as if it is offset to one side, its more likely to do it on the side that has to travel further. Quote
Agno Posted August 17, 2012 Author Posted August 17, 2012 I thought I read that with 260Z hubs washers aren't needed... Unless I was thinking of the TP Magna rotors as well. Ah well, back to Bunnings I go! Quote

Ah well, back to Bunnings I go! Yeah TP magna rotors will be centered perfectly. How far are they offset? 240z hubs are 8-9mm thinner so that could fix your problem, probably a safer fix than the washers or go 260 hubs and tp discs. Here's some cheapies to use with 260 hubs, the second set I use on my car on road and heavy track days with no issues http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Disc-Brake-Rotors-Front-Vented-DBA221-Mitsubishi-Magna-TM-TN-TP-Galant-HG-/110775813638?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item19cac0c606#ht_1302wt_689 http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MITSUBISHI-MAGNA-TM-TN-TP-FRONT-DISC-BRAKE-ROTORS-/300365472193?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item45ef2d61c1#ht_1395wt_689 Those pierburg fuel pump are great, I've had one for most of the time I've had the car, no regulator required and are super quiet. Supplies around 2.7 at the carbs. Quote
Agno Posted August 18, 2012 Author Posted August 18, 2012 I already have TP Magna rotors sitting at home to go on this car Gareth. Just when I went to widen the slot on the calipers I pretty much butchered them... So i went and got another pair and used those instead lol Quote

So i went and got another pair and used those instead lol wait? did you split the caliper in half and space it with washers??? I hope not... Reading over my earlier post i can see how it could seem that is what i was saying, but to clarify (also for anyone else reading) i placed the washers between the mounting ears of the caliper and the stub axle, moving the caliper inwards towards the center line of the rotor. MaygZ Posted August 18, 2012 Posted August 18, 2012 The TP rotor is wider than the gap in a hilux caliper so something has to give. Either the rotor is surfaced down to 22mm or the grinder opens the gap in the caliper. I'm guessing Agno had a go at widening the caliper gap and wasn't happy with the result. It was something I strongly considered but eventually disregarded as I couldn't get the grinder blade far enough into the caliper to do a neat job - and I didn't want to crack open the caliper. I looked at getting a spacer plate made, but found the cost of doing that was more than the money saved by using the TP over the s13 disc. Quote
Agno Posted August 19, 2012 Author Posted August 19, 2012 MaygZ got it in one. I want happy with the grinding job I did. Splitting the calipers and putting washers in there... *shudder* lol Took the car out to DECA in Shepparton yesterday. What a blast! If anyone is looking for some entry level track days I couldn't recommend that any higher Quote

I had mine apart to rebuild anyway and it was a lot easier doing it in two halves. How'd it go at deca, any issues or upgrades in the wings? Will you do the nationals with track day? Quote
Agno Posted August 19, 2012 Author Posted August 19, 2012 Yeah, $100 mistakes aren't the nicest thing in the world but we live and learn I guess. Finding a second set of calipers was surprisingly easy really. Still waiting to hear on the results from yesterday. I made a few costly errors on the skidpad but I would assume mid pack, given it was my first go at track days I was just happy to build up my skills and find the limits of the car. I'm doing the Skyline Nationals track day at Wakefield Park on the 9th of September and hope to have the carbies and a new exhaust by then. I found myself touching the roof when wearing my helmet yesterday so I will have to try to find a way to get around that too! As for Datsun Nationals at the island it's probably still a bit too far away to know really, once pricing and that comes out I will have to see what commitments I have to dodge Easter wise to be there. Driving full tilt down the front straight at PI is something I have always wanted to do so that might help me! In the future (after my wallet recovers) an LSD, a proper race seat and maybe a significantly better handbrake (hydro?) if I am going to do more motorkhana style events would be worthy additions to my car. My goal is to keep it old school so nothing crazy that's for sure Quote
Riceburner Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 Re seat height.... I had the same problem. There's some plastic hexagonal spacers on the bottom of the seat rail studs that can be removed, if you remove them the seat will sit about an inch lower. Quote

Gives you some, valuable extra room. Quote
Agno Posted August 19, 2012 Author Posted August 19, 2012 I tried angling the seat back at the track and nothing short of looking fully sick would give me enough head clearance! Looks like you have given me another thing to add to my (growing) to do list Gareth Quote

Agno Posted August 22, 2012 Author Posted August 22, 2012 some photos of the car at DECA stolen from the outer reaches of the internets: In the end I finished in 35th place. I'm pretty disappointed with that because my brother (who is my twin and is in a very closely matched car performance wise... coincidence? ) finished 15th. Damn penalties! I also got my headers back from being ceramic coated, so they will go on this week Quote
MaygZ Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 Now that's a nice looking Zed! Love the amount of rubber you've got under those guards. I reckon the new headers should get you well up the order of merit. Quote
Agno Posted September 1, 2012 Author Posted September 1, 2012 So I attempted to get the triples on and running today. Started off well when I installed the new fuel pump. For the first time in a long time the exhaust is louder than the clicking of the fuel pump! But then came installing the carbs... They are all on and hooked up, linkages are perfect, everything is tight, but the car refuses to turn over and when it does it misfires . When I turn it off fuel dribbles out of the trumpets as well. They are DHLA40G with stock Alfa GTV2000 jetting, which is what was recommended to me by Gordon Dobie, it is also the jetting Ash/Rev's orange 260Z/Gareth's old triples set up was. I think it's the timing being way out, but I really don't have any idea where to start, does anyone have any suggestions? It's an L28, F54 block with N42 head, 280ZX dizzy and ignition system is all near new (plugs, leads, coil etc). Thanks in advance Quote
Riceburner Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 My Peirburg is run with a relay to give constant power supply and gives 2.7 at the carbs, I also run a return line with a 2mm restrictor in the line. This is the same setup I used when I ran triples. IIRC the peirburg max supply is 2.9. Was the timing ok prior to the change? I'm not much help with these as it's been too long since I had mine. It'll be a little bit of fiddling to begin with but once you get them working well you'll love it. Oh the sound! Quote
Agno Posted September 2, 2012 Author Posted September 2, 2012 Got the fudgeer working this afternoon. I added a bit more advance on the distributor, reset the float levels and then used a combination of start ya bastard, shouting, threats and the choke wheels held on to get it to turn over the first time. After that it idled really smooth, pretty happy with how it goes straight out of the box! Now to make myself up a bracket for the throttle return spring and get it tuned. The throttle is a bit sticky so I need a bigger/more return springs. Quote
luvemfast Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 Well done. I guess it can take some time to get all the circuits flushed out and running right Quote
zzzzed Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 there is somthing about this car i like. I think it is the simplicity Quote
