d3c0y Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 Wow you did well out of that, mine owes me double that. I'm guessing you didnt add the cost of the RB20DET box into that though right? Quote
peter mc Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 Jake you can not look at that price , your box has all new parts and short shifter, and option 1 shifter mods, and waterjet cleaned cases and the labour to do the job ,its not the same thing Quote
Riceburner Posted August 20, 2013 Author Posted August 20, 2013 Pete is spot on, it's chalk n cheese. Yours is professionally built, has all the best mods, going to be bomb proof! My box is a backyarder, seems ok on the road but on track I'm not sure, fingers crossed I guess. If I had the coin I'd definately have Pete doing it. There's a few big savings, I got the Kameari CR set on sale so to my door for $1516, RHDjapan was asking $1700+ post, Kameari USA was more expensive. The box was a steal at $100 only real problem was the centre bearing had completely fallen to pieces. I haven't seen one at that price since, they're usually around $500. I forgot to add the used .83 fifth $100 and the box $100, so it's more like 2400ish plus Kameari mount. I still have to weld a custom shifter to get everything looking oem again. Pete, lets hope I did a better job than the camshaft Quote
d3c0y Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 Come on you two, give me a bit of credit! I know they aren't the same thing, but for what Gareth needs, he did it for a pretty well for the price he paid, that's all i was saying! I don't have the time to put into building one and if i had to do it again i would still get you to do it Pete. Quote
Fairlady Z Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 Nice work Gareth. Cant wait to hear it now on the track screaming past. One day. Quote
Riceburner Posted August 24, 2013 Author Posted August 24, 2013 Nice work Gareth. Cant wait to hear it now on the track screaming past. One day. Hopefully soon mate, It's been far too long! I have modified the shifter to fit and use the OEM shift boots, It' a hybrid of the RB base with my old Z stick as the top. The old stick was already offset as I was running a 260 box in an auto car, all I had to do was weld this onto the RB 'ball' and I have plenty of clearance. The trans tunnel is a mess, this was the hack job done by the people who did the manual conversion previously. Once the rubber boot goes on it still manages to cover the butchered part of the tunnel luckily. Kameari crossmember is ordered, hopefully this will solve the vibration @ 100kph. Kameari said this mount is only suitable for post September 72 Z's with the 71C conversion. Regarding the shifter, It appears I am missing the 'wave washer', 'snap ring C clip'. Anyone know part numbers or better yet have some they aren't using? I want two wave washers, this will tighten up the feel a lot. Did I say how awesome this box is, the ratios have transformed the car! Quote
peter mc Posted August 24, 2013 Posted August 24, 2013 yep there so under rated , till you drive with a close ratio box , you just don't know how good a car it can be . Quote
d3c0y Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 Ohh this makes me want to get mine back on the road! I cant wait to try the diff and gearbox combo in mine. Quote
JonU Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 I'm not sure how long it's been since you had the 6 moto carbs in your car, but it really caught my eye. I'm still reading through this massive thread looking to find what your opinions on the setup was. Also I'm wondering if you did it over again, what would you have done differently? I was thinking I might try my hand at this as well. This is assuming it would flow enough to support 8k rpm, which I imagine it would since they came off a street bike. Any suggestions on this or do you think I would be better off with triples? Quote
Riceburner Posted August 29, 2013 Author Posted August 29, 2013 Ohh this makes me want to get mine back on the road! I cant wait to try the diff and gearbox combo in mine. With that monster under the bonnet and the 4.3 LSD yours will be a rocket!! I'm not sure how long it's been since you had the 6 moto carbs in your car, but it really caught my eye. Any suggestions on this or do you think I would be better off with triples? Jon, I'd say it would depend on the engine spec and what you plan to do with the car. Triples or flat slides have a much better throttle response, the CV's are vaccuum operated slides so they give good low down torque but lack in throttle response. You'll find a heap of people who are willing to tune webers or mikunis but not many will want to tune the CV bike carbs. If your planning such a high revving engine I'd say stick with the age proven triple setup. The cars intended use has changed a lot since I did the bike carb swap, it was more road oriented back then. I managed to get 8 carbs for $360, paid $120 for couplers, $ for jetting and welded the manifold myself(first attempt). So it was a dirt cheap upgrade, as I couldn't justify triple 45's at the time. If I had my time over I would've got the manifold professionally done, it worked fine, but a laser cut flange with tapered runners would have made it perform better. They were quite good economy wise and performed better than my triple 40 dellortos, how they would match up against 45's I'm not sure. There's always FCR's but be prepared to spend $ and do a heap of research into tuning them. Quote
JonU Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Thanks, that's the kind of answer I was looking for. Quote
Gordo Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 So Gareth, would you do it all again in hind sight? And JonU. Gareth gave a thorough answer to your question , which way will you go? I can say having see Gareth's car first hand. It an amazing build that he has under taken. Very thorough surching for all the little nick nacks that make it one of a kind. Show quality presentation . And on the race track it's very competitive . With Gareth's driving skills and quoted hp he is at the top of the time sheets. So it's fare to say it is all show and lots of Go. Quote
Riceburner Posted August 30, 2013 Author Posted August 30, 2013 Yeah I'd probably do it the same way again, it's all been a great learning experience and the confidence gained from doing the work has spurred me on to do the next upgrade. Thanks Gordo, your too kind. I'll think of that next time I see you disappearing after the first lap P.S. Tell me all your secrets! Hehe. Quote

Well, I must say that I think I've seen all of the videos Gareth has posted of his car and it looks, sounds, and appears to run great. I really, really, really like the idea of 6 carbs. Tuning them may be a large bit of experimentation but that's fine by me. My only concern is how well it will support the high rpms. My 240 is currently in the shop getting the body brought back up to spec. It was in really good shape with just some minor surface rust that I wanted completely removed before repainting. Ultimately I want this car to perform in the upper rpm ranges. My end point with the engine is to have forged internals that have been balanced, dry sump conversion, and either the 6 pack of moto carbs, or the triple webers/mikunis. I don't have a hp goal in mind for it, I'm just looking for a nice, responsive engine that thrives up high. I've already got a LW flywheel and clutch combo that combined weighs about the same as the stock flywheel by itself and will also be adding in a Mallory Unilite Dizzy with MSD 6AL ignition and blaster coil. But yes Gareth's videos have inspired me to take a look at the motorcycle carbs, the FCR in particular. I just have to find a price for them here in the states. Quote
Riceburner Posted September 3, 2013 Author Posted September 3, 2013 For those of you looking at doing this gearbox mod here's some pics of the Kameari mount, Much nicer than I could manage. Once again this is only suitable for post September 72 Z's using the 71C gearbox. It has some urethane bushings in it, but they may as well be solid steel I'm thinking of putting my urethane bushes in but these Kameari ones look smaller. Anyone know the stock bushing O.D.? These are 31mm od and have 4066 stamped into the face. Quote
d3c0y Posted September 4, 2013 Posted September 4, 2013 ill buy your poly ones if you dont end up using them. I need a pair for my x-member Quote
Riceburner Posted September 4, 2013 Author Posted September 4, 2013 If my current poly ones fit and if these are the same size. You can have em Jake Quote
d3c0y Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 You're a good fella aren't you! Dont have a new gearbox mount hiding there too by any chance? Quote
Riceburner Posted October 13, 2013 Author Posted October 13, 2013 Does it ever end? I'm going the airbox route for the intake on the engine, the socks are giving me the sh!ts. I'll copy Alans setup and duct the airbox to a 280z airbox with a K&N or uni filter. The airbox is from R-factory Japan, a suggestion from Nzeder got my interest, Alan (HS30H) runs it on his gorgeous 240ZG and was kind enough to take some measurements for me. According to my measurements I'll need some 20mm billet machined spacers to clear the upper bodies of each FCR carb, other than that it should go in nicely with a minimum velocity stack of 80mm hopefully more. I also got a great little aluminium dead pedal from them, It's meant for a KGC10 skyline but fits my S30Z perfectly and a lot more comfortable than the factory 'Lego Brick' I finally managed to get the reverse lights working with a new switch, I think I may have fitted a neutral switch from the RB box and then the OD switch which didn't work either. Whoops! EDIT: After reading horror stories of the diff solid mount I have removed it and fitted an OEM rubber mount with the RT urethane snubber trimmed. Guess what, the Vibration is back > That's it I'm going with a Stuart Wilkins style captive diff mount, It'll be bullet proof even if the bush fails! Quote
Riceburner Posted October 31, 2013 Author Posted October 31, 2013 Is it a crossmember is it an insulator is it a captive diff mount It's all of them and none at the same time That's right, this vibration is slowly making me more batty than I already am But will it fix the problem... I've also rebuilt both half shafts with new heavy duty hardy spicer uni joints. To be continued, same bat channel, same bat time. Kapow! Biff! Wack! Quote
Fairlady Z Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 nice work Gareth will be looking doing something similar when time come for my cars. none of them will have stock engine power and original setup is crap. Quote
Riceburner Posted November 13, 2013 Author Posted November 13, 2013 nice work Gareth will be looking doing something similar when time come for my cars. none of them will have stock engine power and original setup is crap. Thanks mate, It fixed the vibration, Yay! I may do the same with the g/box crossmember, that way everything is captive and will last for a very very long time. Marugen Shokai works style rear spoiler finally arrived. Wow, it was worth the wait. Best quality fibreglass I've ever seen, finish is great and looks ready for paint straight out of the box Those others that ordered this will be very happy campers! With a bit of luck I'll get it painted this weekend Quote
