Toecutter Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 I saw mine parked on Fitzroy St in St.Kilda and left a note on the windscreen. It had a smashed drivers side window with a jumper in place over it. As it turned out the owner called me back about a week later and advised he had just moved from SA nad driven the car down. He was in a bad spot and wanted to sell the car so it worked out ok for both of us! Sulio Quote
sco_aus Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 I was in west Sydney at friends place who's dad had a Z31, I was interested in them, so he took me to a Zed parts place to learn about em, and there in a thin layer of dust was my baby. Quote
dave_hl Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 i am pretty new to the zed scene but i probably first set eyes on one only just earlier this year. It was instant love and i knew i had to own one for my first car, so for months and months i visited every website on the net and looked daily on every car site for 280's up for sale. i went and looked at one in geellong which was a piece of it and then about 2 months ago i found one on ebay selling in Newcastle. no one bid so i was in contact with him, flew up to newcastle, bought it and drove it home to melbourne. and here i am a month later with a reluctant father wishing i had of invested into a more practical and reliable car. pffft to that!!! i love her! zedevan Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 when my older brother was looking for a car to buy he was interested in both lj toronas and 240z's, both of which he didn't end up buying due to rust and price, but he kept showing me pics of RPMz car and i agreed it did look nice, but they then went out of my mind due to the price. i knew a chick at schools dad rally'd one, and also some other family friends did i was then looking for cars and was thinking of either a sprinter, or a cordia, both of which would need an engine conversion, and i was leaning more towards a sprinter due to RWD and a nice common engine etc, but i also liked how cordia's bonnets went up backwards and they were cheaper, then my brother said to me "why dont you get a zed if you want a car with a backwards opening bonnet, and it actully looks nice" so after thinking about how it doesn't need much more than a spinter etc to become a really nice car (shocks, paint, engine etc) i started to look for one, but none were coming up in the price range i could handle, and i needed a car more and more gav knew i was looking for a car 5g or under that had a RWC and one come up on ozdat, i called the guy first thing in the morning and went and had a look, he'd had the car as his daily driver which he bought off an ex co worker who had bought it new, and basicially i have been driving it since. looking back now i should of spent a bit more and gotten a really nice example of a 240z as it would end up costing me less, but i've had fun, as while its not the most practical car (had the same things with my parents) it's done the job well, and now i have more money to spend i can put it into my first car and experience the transformation! my only concern is fuel efficentcy while using it as a daily driver and the rising cost of petrol... Bruce Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 I am also new to the zed scene having only owned mine for a couple of months. Prior to this I was building and racing an Lseries powered 1200 coupe. I was about to put a twin cam turbo in it when my 240z came up in the trading post. I sold all my 1200 bits and are now building up my z to race in the group 5 sprint series. The guy I bought it off had owned it for 25 years and had looked after it pretty well however the body needs a bit of work. At some stage someone has sprayed it white over the original metallic blue (why would you do that?). At some stage I'll take it back to metal and spray it the original color. In the mean time I am busily preparing it to get registered, then I'll bolt a seat and harness in and take it racing Quote
Natez Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 well i prolly goy inyo z cars when i was around 16, now im 22, saw the green covertible one going into a red rooster just down from my high school and tried to work out what it was, as at that point was working at tat the local lone star trying to make a few dollars to save to get a car for when i was 18, as i already had a sweet pushy so i was sorted till i was 18 haha.... had some cash saved up, looked at around 2 Zeds and both had awesome race motors in them, but the bodys were shocking, ended up finding a decent 76 260z that i bought for 2k, ended up spending another 2k to get it RW, and another 1.5k to redo the motor, but at the end of the day i learnt everything i know about cars from that car, and had a great time pulling stuff apart and making it run and all that kinda stuff, that car was a bog monster, but it got stolen and recovered burnt when i was 20, i got a picture that i got somewhere around here, went on to buy a sprinter, that i did a worked 100kw 4age conversion, spray paint and suspension work to, but never felt like the Z, bought a sr20det 5spd silvia, that pumped out 180rwkw, and i spent as much money on petrol as i did on tyres, smashed it, did a cheapo fix, and got rid of it... then looking for another Z now, picked up a restorer from warrne from Zworx, which is still kinda in the same conditon it was 2 years ago, rust free car, that needs to be put back together and i need to sell it.... i was hoping to fix that car up, then sulio told me he was selling his original 73 240z, which i wanted, and grabed from him for a decent price, now its sitting in my driveway, awaiting a mechanic to give it a RWC tommorrow, and hopefully be on the road friday... but will see... if you want pictures ill put them up when i get my laptop working again.. PZG302 Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 I ended up with my Z after upgrading my race car from a 180B SSS. I always liked the shape of the 240/260 coupes, plus the L series is one of the best motors ever built in my opinion. Hanging around Z16 and helping them out on Saturdays Z's got into my blood. I ended up buying an ex rally 260 coupe with injected L28 for the road and track. Had a ball with it, but the body was shot, you could jack one wheel off the ground and not be able to shut the bonnet there was that much flex. Afetr a driveway accident at the workshop it was decided to wreck it out and put it on the shelf, keeping the good bits. I then bought my current 240 off a mate who was looking at building a racer and needed to finance it. I've had the car now for about 10 years and don't know if I will ever get rid of it. It had been a brilliant reliable race car winning the '97 Marque Sports Cars Championship in NSW, and is still a fun car to drive, even if Mazda MX5's can blow me away at the moment  Quote

JP240z Posted August 3, 2006 Posted August 3, 2006 Saw my first zed on TV when I was about ten. It was always my dream car. When I turned 16, I started looking for a 240 after years of serious saving. First one I checked out was perfest, haven't looked back since. I'm still on track to have the car finished well before my 18th birthday in January. Cheers, JP. Quote
Huw Posted August 3, 2006 Posted August 3, 2006 was bored one day reading about cars..... saw a zed and was interested (dark blue one on southbank (aus photo's at zhome.com)) 2 and a half years later and 10k overbudget and its almost done in time for my 21st (next month)! good luck getting it finished in schedule JP have been saying finished in a month or two for a year! JP240z Posted August 4, 2006 Posted August 4, 2006 Thanks Huw, There dead set isn't much left to do. Still tinkering around with the throttle cable setup I made, and still some interior panels to chuck on, but she is running. I will also need to get new springs for the back, only got about 900mm clearance. Scrapes getting on and off car-trailer. 10K over budget, wow! I'm also over budget, but I've decided to forget about a road bike for a couple of years and spend a little bit more to put a good system in the zed. Licence countdown is at 155 days left. Cheers, JP. Quote
NZeder Posted August 4, 2006 Posted August 4, 2006 I was living in Singapore in the mid 70's so got hocked on 70's Japanese cars (I was only 5 at time but it left an impression visiting all the car yards with Dad who was in the market for a new car - looked at 260z 2+2, Celica's and what he purchased a Mitsi GTO-GS-R) I had a 240z matchbox toy with flares (my 2 year old son now plays with the same toy + a 350z that I got for him, it starts again ) so it has alway been there - in my blood that is. Then when I was 14 my mate who left school got a job and a 240z (in NZ you start driving at 15 and back then you got a full license from the day you passed) so I was re-united with the love affair - got out the old matchbox, looked at old car mags that Dad had and dreamed for the day I would finish school/uni so I could get a job and purchase my first Zed. I still have the first Zed I purchased my 1977 RS30 (2 seater) I have owned another 4 but never sold the first one I purchase (the others have long gone) I would love to own one of the following also (or both if $$ were not a problem) PS30 Fairlady Z 432 powered with the S20 engine KPGC10 Skyline GT-R again power with the S20 engine. Maybe one day I will have one in the garage - if you set a goal and work towards it, it can happen Quote

philfree Posted October 24, 2006 Posted October 24, 2006 Hi i got into them when my dad brought one before i was born. He then brought another one back in 2000 it's a 75 260z 2+2 after he spent a consideriable amount on it he was then forced to sell it but no one would buy it and i ended up with it as a result loved that car ever since he brought it in 2000 Quote
sid280 Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 One of my old best mates bought a BA XR8 and Supercharged it, drove it around for a few months then we gutter punched it real bad (at least I was sober). Car was off the road for about 6-8 weeks and after 2 weeks of paying $350 a week for rental cars we decided to buy something. He bought the 280zx for $1250 from some guy on performance forums, spent $1100 off the bat with an mp3 player, RWC and some other goodies. When he got the XR8 back he had no interest in the 280 so i purcahsed it off him for $2350. Had an oldschool Cortina Wagon sitting out the front, restored body, half restored inside, 3 months after work and about $1500 - was handed over to a wreckers to made way for the new found ZX, I would have kept the cortina except at the time we had that, 2 JZ Soarers, a GZ Soarer, a bluebird and a pintara, and i just couldnt squeeze any more cars onto our nature strip. Azman Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 Well i first fell for datsuns in general but more specifically Z's back when i was an apprentice motor mechanic in 2000. I started helping out one of the guys i worked with on his datto 1600 race car, which led to us going to Z Spares to retrieve some parts where i first layed eyes on the datsun 240z comming upto that age where I could learn to drive i tracked down and aquired an imported 260z with a 6 cylnder 2.0ltr L20, it did its job and got me through my learning period and was eventually sold to be restored and does look beautifull today. After returning from 8 months in qld I was keen to get my bum back into a Zed so i got a loan, searched and found a 260z 2+2(700kms away) and bought it upon seeing it and still have it to this day sitting in the garage waiting to see either the road or the track again.
