WogsRus Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 how much for new guards. Asking as i need two and probably better to get new then fix the ones i have Quote
peter t Posted March 12, 2010 Author Posted March 12, 2010 Got them from All Z Parts for $495.00 Each plus $110.00 Freight. Quote
KatoKid Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Ditto for me, I could repair mine but if they are a good fit I would prefer to go new. Does anyone know where Warren sources his from (Black Dragon or MSA etc) and how are they for quality and fit? Quote
peter t Posted March 13, 2010 Author Posted March 13, 2010 Guards were nissan parts. A few ripples on one guard but that is this how any new panels turn up. The usual gap fitting must be done but I am happy with what I got having seen new panels on other cars at the work shop. Shaun and Steve turned up today to pick up my old guards and it was great to have a chat with a couple of nice young fellows. Got rid of old guards and picked up a brand new petrol pump. Thanks Shaun. Quote
sexual_sushi Posted March 13, 2010 Posted March 13, 2010 And thank you for the guards. Good to have a chat, next time I'll have to bring some rum Good luck with the rebuild, you're doing some good quality work there. Those interior parts in particular looked pretty schmick Quote
peter t Posted March 19, 2010 Author Posted March 19, 2010 What a job, Have fitted new guards and light pods. Found the right hand side one had been filled with bog as it was very proud to the guard. Was just about to fill the guard with bog then decided to rub the pod and found heeps of bog. Check out the pics and now the gaps are great. All I have to do now is gap the doors and start to paint. This is going to be the most frighting part. Will let you know how it turns out. Quote
reverendzed Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 Well done Pete. Just make sure you put some hi-fill on those guards and pods otherwise you will see those orbital marks in your finish coat. Let me know if you're not sure on anything paint wise I would be glad to help with any info. Rev. Quote
peter t Posted March 19, 2010 Author Posted March 19, 2010 Thanks Rev. Picked up primer from MPA Refinish Supplies today and these guys are very helpfull in advising me what steps to take. They are only too helpfull in mixing the paint I want and will match it. They mainly do work for trade and are also agent for POR 15. That is how I found them. The rest is up to me as a pro job is just out of reach of my budget. With the help from the guy up above it will tuirn out alright from a distance. Troncy. Quote

peter t Posted April 1, 2010 Author Posted April 1, 2010 Starting to look like a car again. Well it's out the back for me and some more rubbing down to do. Quote
peter t Posted April 2, 2010 Author Posted April 2, 2010 Got the primer on today. Now all the hard works starts. Quote
reverendzed Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 Well done Pete, it's all down hill from here! What are you going to do with the primer are you going to rub that and then topcoat? Rev. Quote
peter t Posted April 2, 2010 Author Posted April 2, 2010 Hi Rev, I am following directions from another site as to painting a car. I will lay a mist coat of flat black on top of primer tomorrow and rub that back then if all goes well I will top coat. An old mate of mine has give me some tips and I know it's a lot of work but he achieved good results with acrylic paint. I don' t want to upset the neighbours as you can see where I am painting from my pics. The guy next door has a Merc and I don't want to have fix that from fallout from 2 pac paint. As it is I stilll have to prime the inside of the guards and probably would be best to paint them on the car. Still have the bonnet to rub back but find it difficult to paint horizontally. Maybe I should use a step ladder. What do you think. Quote
reverendzed Posted April 2, 2010 Posted April 2, 2010 Yep, that the right way to go! You should always paint your hood on a horizontal surface. Just put it on some saw horses or the like. When you paint it make sure you have good paint flow and lay double header coats then walk around and do the other side, it will come up fine. When you put your clear coat on thin it a little more and put a good flow coat on, this way you will avoid the typical acrylic dry spray that can ruin your finish. Rev. Quote
peter t Posted April 25, 2010 Author Posted April 25, 2010 All primed ready for rub down a second time than hope to apply top coat next weekend. Quote
sexual_sushi Posted April 25, 2010 Posted April 25, 2010 Looking good Pete, not too long now... Quote
sexual_sushi Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 Hey Peter did you want to completely strip your parts car down? I'm replacing my gearbox this weekend and have a freind staying the weekend after but I could come out on the 15th and/or 16th of May? Need to make way for that pool table and bbq haha... Quote
peter t Posted April 30, 2010 Author Posted April 30, 2010 Thanks for the offer mate but I want to get the good one painted first so I can get all the interior out of the house. (car interior that is) The wife is sick of having to work around all the bits I have in various corners of the house. I have to remind her that the car seat in the bedroom is not really going to be there for ever. I am also trying to get that VL out of the shed and the only way that is going to happen is to fix it myself. Anybody out there got a rear wiper motor for a VL wagon? Should be ready to lay the colour on the Z around about the weekend you are free. After that I will certainally making some room around the pool table. Quote
peter t Posted May 23, 2010 Author Posted May 23, 2010 Still rubbing. What a job when you don't have a lot of free time or just buggered and couldn't be bothered. All the runs and dents show up when you get that glass like finish and you have to start again. No wonder panel shops want so much to paint a car. Quote
