Well this one is definitely going to open a can of worms!

I don't know much, but I know the desirability goes in this order;

1. 240z

2. 260z 2 seater

3. 260z 2+2

4. A rusty volkswagen with flat tyres and cigarette burnt seats

5. 280zx's

Basically prices follow the same order.

looks like a clean 240z for sale on Ebay for $23.5k....that's a fair indication of what a decent 240 will set you back............i just had my 260 insured value assessed by shannons at $27k

I have noticed prices have gone up a bit in the last year, i don't know if they are actually selling for that much more. I just get the feeling a few people are selling their stuff lying around hoping to get a bit more money coming in in these "tough times".

I wouldn't expect a drivable 240z for less than $5000, even the wrecks have been $2500-$4000 lately. Very tidy 240z's will go for $15000+. There have been a few for sale over the $30k mark over the years but these are usually race prepped cars.

2 seater 260z's are harder to value. They are less common than the 240z's in Australia but the 240z's are more desirable. The good thing about the 2 seater 260z's is that you can modify it without the purists complaining about ruining a good 240z (not that this is a bad thing, i think early 240's should be left original too, unless they are so far gone...) You can tend to get a pretty tidy (not show quality) 2 seater 260z for $8000-$12000

You should be able to manage a registrable or close to registrable 260z 2+2 for $4000-$6000 although you may be lucky and pick one up cheaper if you have time on your hands. A very nice 2+2 will set you back $10000-$16000 and an average rig with little bits that need work anywhere in between

Don't see many modded ones sold ... Any ideas on really nice ones with hot 'L' motors? Does it need to be a standard car with matching numbers to achieve the 25'ish price? How about the RB motors? Any thoughts on prices for cars with vastly different mods ?? I guess it just comes down to how much someone wants to pay right? Ultimately the Japanese I think will keep wanting these cars in good condition, which should keep good cars prices up there... any thoughts on this?

This was about to start a war...... >:(

Until i saw that Mick has a 280ZX.

From my experience I think you are right on the money......heavily modded cars (engine retrofits) often sell for much less than those with L series.... or better still ....matching numbers with the original engines.

As with any desirable classic.........the more standard usually the better price...or keep the mods to a level in keeping with the period (ie triple carbs as opposed to turbo and injection etc) .

But in essence it comes down to what the buyer is willing to pay......I had a couple of very serious offers at the QLD Nats in the high $20s.....hence my decision to get my Zed revalued by Shannons so I could up the insurance.

I think a better question would be how much have you got to spend then we can tell you what you can expect to get for your money. Otherwise we might be talking anywhere from $3,000- to $40,000- for a Zed which is a big difference. Remember numbers quoted for selling a car aren't always what they get for them.  ;)

I own a 240z and a 280zx. The 280zx is a great car. The problem is people say they are heavy. Yes they are heavier than a 240z but compared to other cars they are still light. A 280zx is about 1250Kg most other 6 cylinders are around 1500KG. Plus there are not as many modified 280zx's out there. So we end up trying to compare 240z's and 260z's that are often modified against stock 280zx's.

I'm not willing to part with either of my Zeds but if I was absolutly forced to choose I would ditch the 240. But then again my 280 won best 280 at the 2005 nationals so maybe I'm biased.

off topic but for that lime green 240z with the L28, that Dyno reading cant be right.. peak power at 5000rpm and its only like 135hp.. is that RWHP?

if you're wanting one to modify try to get one thats made before the middle of 1976, as they have less emissions restrictions.

incase you havn't already read it elsewhere, early 260z's have the same body as later 240z's (although i'm not sure if this means they have the same cutouts for the rear lights? - someone able to enlighten me?) - just different rear lights, dash, engine etc, and you will generally pay a grand or so less for it if in the same condition

Grrr Damn VW beetle/porshe/rattling egg beater. (Yes, i despise these cars >:()

Ive owned 280ZX's since I got my license and still love them. I use my current S130 as a daily and it does that job quite well. What can i say it has all the creature comforts that you still have to pay for in cars today not to mention great reliability.

But I also own a 260Z which is a completely different pandora's box to drive.  ;D

The 260z 2 seater has the same body shape as the 240z but a heavier grade of metal was used in the 260z making the car a bit heavier. Having said that the weight even changed between the early and late 240. Yes the brake lights on the 260z 2 seater are different from the 240. The 260 2+2  and 2 seater share the same brake lights.

Mate the bottom line is get any zed so long as it is a good solid car. All the zeds are great and you'll be hooked with half a dozen scattered around your place before you know it :)

They technically didn't. They just went through various design changes.

Typically though the <400 chassis number cars are lighter.

BTW I see the OP hasn't posted again.

l hope he's found a S13 - that way he wont crash one of our precious Zeds into a tree or something...

Or worse still being seen on "Today Tonight" doing burnouts. Best left to the already ruined Skylines, Commondore's and Foulcans..
