Dry or wet weight David?

Being a 240z they are lighter than the 260’s and that iron L6 being replaced by alloy would also help

Ive got 35kg in the ladder chassis, will be another 8kg in those rails, lpg donut tank a good 5kg extra the diff will have another 3kg extra, AMG seats another 10kg, planned rear inner interior mods and reo probably 10kg

Thats 70kg just there on top of the original 1,100 kg 260 wet weight

Semi dry or wet depends on how you look at it....glass half full? 1080 kg was the weight with what ever was in the fuel tank which wasn't much so call it dry.

M3 engine is still an iron block. Internets says that M3 engine is only a few kg's heavier than L 6, but I've got R200, and Skyline brakes which are much heavier so STD 240Z weight of 1045 plus my add ons makes 1080 seem spot on.

Notched out the roll bar area and added and RHS section for streangth due to its now dog leg shape

The front graft welded up brilliantly and as the new rail section is securely welded to the remains of the lower torsion rod mount I don’t think I will have to plate it with a gusset to reinforce it, it’s now purely more of an asthetic section.

Still needs finishing welds which I’ll do later. Now onto the second rail and removal of the remaining floor pan.

Happy days.

Progress on drivers side rail today with attention on the rear dog leg extension

All in all going well, checking the geometry, I ran a length across them both and then measured the distance from each sill, each side has a gap of 53mm and are squared and level.

Hopefully I will get the chance to finish this one off tomorrow before I move onto the floor pan and trans tunnel.

Great work John.

It’s a very strong platform to bolt the big banger to. Thumbs up.

Good to see progress John. Are you going to cage the car as those rails will have no crumple factor?

Posted

Thanks Jeff

Yes should adequatodeal with the M112’s torque or a future addition of 2 more cylinders in the M156 AMG V8 which is identical as far as  transmission bolt pattern and engine mounts just a fraction longer

Thanks Peter

Crumple points have to be added fore and aft on each side of the engine cross member still

No internal roll bars planned, but a reinforcing ladder brace between the two rear shock towers is in the plan

Nice to be back Simon

Another day of fabrication removing the remaining tunnel section and fabricating a new cross support.

After centering all up I realized that the entire sections are not symmetrical and are off some 15mm to the passenger side, meaning the drivers foot well and gearshift position are 15mm more to the left.

All good, I’m having new custom pans cut, bent and pressed which should be ready this week.

Happt to report, no exploding cutting discs and flying metal this week.

Cheers

John

Well that’s it for the weekend

Ran out of gas as I was finishing off the gussets in the rail floor pan cross member

Managed to weld in the ladder chassis pick up bolts, close the ends after reducing the deck height by 5mm and welding one gusset in

All in all, extremely happy with the progress96E1E695-8C6C-49C6-BC4A-BA40E82783E4.thumb.jpeg.d0b4dcad64a554441070e1f27163aceb.jpeg1A35F1BC-B726-4FA0-9D48-1F1861BF3A3A.thumb.jpeg.7d530d62ceb14bfe1ae57079129da133.jpeg

Now for the pans which are almost ready to pick up along with some additional weld clean ups

That’s all she wrote for this long weekend

Added some additional gussets at the horse shoe and sat the rare spares pan in just to get an idea how all will sit with the new pans on order and am satisfied all will line up exceptionally well
