Alright i've just about had it.  >:(

What are my options? What can I do so that I don't have this terrible guilt every time I have to drive in the rain. I'm talking rust prevention/proofing stuff, specifically what technologies are out there that people have experience with for Zs. Maybe even just a few ways of slowing down the rusting process? I've got one noticeable spot when you open the hatch currently, and it seems to be growing.

I know many of you have a second car for this reason but sadly that is not an option for me. :(

Cheers,

Where do you want to begin?

The answer to this is varied and as long as chinamans name

Full strip and dip, epoxy coat, various chemical treatments etc etc

Fishoil sprayed into every crevice is a good staring point.

But due to the design of the Zed's body & the type of steel used in them, they are unfortunetly very prown to rust.

Sadly it's one ofthe curses of owning a Zed car - they WILL require body maintenence every few years.

Steve, get the rust spot treated/fixed ASAP. They will rust even if it's not driven in the rain/wet.

Moisture in the air is the main culprit...

Hmm the whole repainting/coating process feels like its out of my reach on a uni students budget. Not to mention the labor on stripping out and putting the car back together.

Are there any technologies that do not require paint to be stripped?

I remember in chemistry we learned that bridges have blocks of magnesium connected to them to act as donors (donate electrons so the iron doesn't have to), so the magnesium corrodes instead of the bridge. Anyone heard of anything like that for cars?

Alright will do, I'll get them to remove it when they take my vinyl roof off in the next couple weeks.

Doesn't fish oil really stink?

Just drive it in the rain. Its an old car yes but eventually you will probably strip it get it on a rotissorie and do a full ground up resto - not now though.

Until then enjoy the fact that you can get an odd dent in it and its not perfect. Work on the mechanics of it, don't be too precious with it.

I'm speaking from someone who used to stress about my car all the time. The reality is you could be so worried about little things like rust and dents, but unfortunately (hopefully not) some drunk driver or just some idiot drive could come along and smash the whole thing to bits and there you were stressing about a spot of rust.

Yes treat the rust to prevent it getting worse, but drive it in the rain. Its not a show car yet! :).

NR240 (Nigels old 240z now owned by Sexual_Sushi) he told me how he used to stress over the car and not drive it in the rain, he said he regretted that and had started driving it in the rain. He has obviously sold it now and probably thinks he was being really silly from the way he was explaining it to me.

I also have heard mixed results from the electronic devices, but most of the problems have been that they only covered small areas.  However, this is a car and zeds tend to get common areas of rust, so maybe this could still benefit you?

K&N put out a product called cavity wax, in a aerosol can for this purpose works great and does not smell, easier if you can put it on hoist to apply it, just go bunta with it

Stevo Fish oil smells for a about a week until it dries, Than its like a skin over the treated area.

Just be carefull about the run off of fish oil. I went a bit overboard last time i did mine.

Sprayed the hell out of it, Eveywhere.  Left it and went on to something else and came back to

all the dust that laid on it while it dried and than it was impossible to get off.

Have a look at my pic of the runs of fish oil..Doesn't smell that bad for long.

Been doing mine for the last 15years and I think it works....

You might as well move to the moon, There's no humidity there....Canberra yes !!

Just drive the car in the rain. Rust takes a while to spread. so in a year or two it might move another 10-30mm, so what. Then when you have the cash do the body up properly and job fixed. That's what I did anyway. Now everything is protected and I say rain, bring it on.   :D

I heard through a third party (Dr. Karl via a light aircraft pilot or flying doctor) who sprays a water/lanolin mix into every crack and crevice.  Apparently it works to same as fish oil but doesn't smell and dust doesn't stick quite as much.  Might give this one a try and let you know, assuming I'm able to buy it by the kilo where it won't cost a bajillion dollars.

Stevo, you're a girlie girl!  Get out and drive it and stop worrying, odds a pretty good it will be smashed/nicked/sold due to GF/kids before it rusts to nothing.  :P

Do be a little bit conservative though and treat obvious spot rust.  Strip the area, POR15 it, and respray it.  Give me a call and come around, I can help you figure out a plan of attack.  I can show you what I'm doing on my 240z.  I've had a couple of British classics which rust worse than Jap (though not as bad as Italian).

Cheers,

Mike

I second the POR15, my cars on a rotissorie now and I plan to hit every bit of the underside, the inside and maybe the engine bay if I can paint my blue over top of it, then tectyl every crevice I can find, I don't want to do my car again in a couple of years.

Man what you said there makes a lot of sense. I'm going to start being less 'precious' about the car and just enjoy it for what it is without worrying about the future.

Thanks for the advice everyone, you guys are really the only people that understand where I'm coming from.

Good point Sushi, next time I go out I'll stick with you so I look good by comparison!  ;D
