Here's a find that could see your project step into a higher gear. Zeds for sale at the moment are like Autumn leaves at the moment.

In the description it says that it's missing its compliance plate.

How much of an issue would this be when it came to trying to register the vehicle?

I am on the lookout for something similar, basically a restoration job, with missing mechanicals as I want to go down the rb powerplant path.

Mate - I would call your local road traffic authority and check with them. Definitely before considering purchase anyway. I'm sure there are ways around it, but the legalities of it may be a 'grey' area.

just noticed it's left hand drive

never mind

Just curious why that might put you off? You don't have to convert to RHD if the car is over 30 years old. If it's a weekend car it shouldn't matter all that much should it?

If you really want to convert many of the conversion components could be picked up from a breaker?

I think as RHD cars get thin on the ground the next best thing will be to start importing from the states and converting.

Although I wouldn't want this car for reasons other than the drive configuration.

When I was in Ireland I came across this 240z.

It was an ex-US car converted to RHD. You couldn't tell.

Considering many US cars are pretty dry and rot free and relatively cheap I think they are a good candidate for conversion, but it will come down to what you want I guess?

I ideally want a RHD, both for the ease of driving on our roads, and it just feels odd to shift with the other hand etc, especially when driving in anger.

In terms of converting it to RHD, it just adds to the number of parts that I would have to source (dash, steering, lines etc) and hence increases the cost.

At 11.5k asking price, it's already a bit steep for what I am looking to pay (I am happy with a car that doesn't run like the one that is missing its compliance plate), as I plan on stripping the car back completely and starting from scratch.

I am happy to be convinced otherwise, but just avoiding extra headaches if I can. I am sure with whatever I do end up with, I will have some nasty surprises, especially with the car's reputation for rusting from the inside out.

Yes they do rust from the inside out so buying a 'restored' car without seeing documented photos of it's rebuild and rust repairs can be a bit of a gamble. Having said that, there are some out there but be prepared to pay what their worth.

If you're looking to do most work yourself or at least give it a try then yes it makes sense to buy a stripped down shell and work from that. Although ideally the car should be as complete as possible to save you headaches if and where possible.

Mechanically these are pretty simple so it's the body work that will take most time and expense to get right. The US is the 1 place they are still pretty cheap but I've noticed 240z's creeping up in value over the last few years.

I guess there isn't an ideal formula here, go with what suits your needs and budget and what you want.

An already imported 240z though would be cheaper than importing 1 yourself. Trust me when I say that can add up quickly.

So if I could find a relatively rust free original LHD S30 going for a reasonable price, I'd probably buy it and convert it to RHD.

I helped the owner move this car a while back, it would make an ideal RB or L28 project for someone, it seems extremely straight the rails/floors/rear deck and spare wheel areas are in VGC and the paint is in great condition except for the cowl panel which has crazed due to poor prep before it was painted the rest of the car is very good. The paint is a fantastic blood red which doesn't show in the photos.

I cant remember seeing any rust on the car at all which is rare for a car this old so it has been stored very well and rust proofed when new and i recon it is the best condition shell i have seen.

That green car has been thrown up a few times. Is the auto why it's not selling?

I'm not sure, I'd say it's worth viewing to determine yourself if interested though? The sunroof and auto won't help, but the recent repaint is a concern if there is no documented evidence to suggest the rust was properly removed and cut out.

However it does look pretty original and tidy i.e not messed about with (bar sunroof) and I think it could make an excellent car for someone looking to get into a Z without investing lots of time on restoration first.

Converting from auto to manual isn't a hugely expensive exercise and you would easily spend a lot more fixing structural rust. So if it's a solid car then it's very well priced in my opinion.

Hello sir,

I am from Saudi Arabia, I very interested in buy your Datsun 240K skyline. This model very popular in 1970 with my father and father friends. Now none left because 'barning of tyres' is what they used this model for.

At $30k I guess that's the market segment they are targeting.

PS: I actually received a similar email like that over Youtube many years ago asking about buying my 240z - guy was in Saudi Arabia. Nice guy but wasn't going to sell my Z ;).

What, you haven't grabbed it to add to your growing collection  ;)

You've seen my backyard, I was thinking if I put enough of them in the grass they might start growing on their own and multiplying...I've seen several backyards where this method has been tested before it's a sure win.

The amount of work that would need is scary! Go on Gav, you can afford another one ;)

Let's see how the first 2 projects go, I may never want to touch another 1 again. ;)
