Hello All,

I was wondering whether any of you could share any knowledge about L28 engines in 240Zs when it comes to getting the car registered in Victoria.

My Zed, which I have had since 2001 or so, had an L26 fitted when I bought it. When that died, my Dad put in a regular L28 from a 280ZX that I had sitting under the bench.

I then switched from full rego to club rego (back when you didn't need a RWC), but that lapsed a little while ago (I missed the renewal notice, dammit)

Now, I want to re-register it again and I'm wondering whether I will have any issues with it having the larger engine from a later model.

The engine is bog standard, with no performance mods, but some people have suggested I would need and engineering certificate and upgraded brakes etc.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

I am also interested in any information on the RWC / rego implications of an L28 in a 240/260Z.

My 260z had an L28 in it which was fitted +25 years ago by the original owner. Rego lapsed 2 years ago.

I am running an L28 in my 72 240z. Since the S30Z came with an L28 in North America (HLS30's) then it should not be an issue. Also the capacity increase is within the 20% increase (in displacement not power). (16%).

Technically it falls under

https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/registration/vehicle-modifications-and-defects/vehicle-modifications/notify-vicroads-of-changes-and-modifications

Change of engine - scenario 1

The replacement engine is identical to the original engine.

The replacement engine is an option allowed by the manufacturer for the same model vehicle.
Documents required:

if the engine is optional to the original, a signed declaration from the registered operator, motor mechanic, or dealer in that make of vehicle or an Automotive Engineer certifying the engine is optional for the vehicle model, and that all modifications made by the manufacturer for the same vehicle model with that optional engine have been completed
an original receipt for the purchase of the engine as proof of ownership of the engine
a completed Change of vehicle details form [PDF 135 Kb].
You will need to attend a VicRoads Customer Service Centre to have the vehicle's engine inspected to confirm the new engine details. No appointment is required.

Note: The optional engine must be offered in Australia by the vehicle manufacturer as an option for that vehicle (or certified variants).

And you can read more about increase in power (20% increase).

I think so long as you notify Vicroads it's got an L28 in it (via Engine number) and perhaps go to the effort of getting it signed off. You should not need an engineers certificate and all that hassle. However this is not legal advice. :D

FWIW I've informed Vicroads and my insurance company. I'm on club rego without issue.

To be 100% legal, that may be the sticking point.

Similar (but different) scenario - to fit an L20B into a Datsun 1600 used to require engineering in NSW, despite 510's / Bluebirds being offered in Japan (as the H510 model) with an L18. L18 fell under the capacity change limit and was OK.

It was quite a while ago, and in NSW, but the "must be offered as an option in Australia" bit meant no L20B. Although everyone just did it anyway, bit like L28's :-X

Take a look through this document. Vic roads has an equivalent document based on this publication. Basically the national guidelines talk about a 20% increase in power for any engine modifications but it does also talk about equivalent manufacturers components.

Thanks for all those answers.

I really appreciate the advice.

Given that engine was not available not available in Aus version, it looks like it fits into category 3, which requires:

a signed declaration from the registered operator, motor mechanic, or dealer in that make of vehicle or an Automotive Engineer certifying that all modifications made by the manufacturer for the same vehicle model with that engine have been completed.

Question: who is a 'registered operator'? Also, can anyone PM me a mechanic who knows enough about Zeds to sign such a document?

Thanks in advance.

You are the "registered operator" !

Again, a while back since I was involved, but for instance, if you upgraded a 6 cyl Kingswood to V8, you had to self-certify that you had also fitted all the ancillaries that Holden fitted for the bigger engine - heavier front springs is one think that I recall, maybe brakes ??? .All I know was that I was very popular at the time with Holden owning mates who wanted invoices from a GMH spares dealer that I happened to work at to prove they had bought all the required bits.........

Ah, thanks.

I got the engine from a 280ZX I bought from an old lady about 12 years ago. Not sure how I can provide a receipt as I don't still have it. I wonder whether a stat dec would do?

Also, does anyone know what upgrades the US 280z had in case Vic Roads asks?

Might just have to give it a go and see If it gets through.

my local know it all vicroads clerk, refused to let me put a l28 in my 260 as they were not manufactured with one, reckoned I needed a engineers certificate, rang the engineer and he said to go back to vic roads, needless to say a grinder was very near the engine number and might have gone a bit astray

you dont need a receipt if you cant get one,  just a signed stat dec. is ok. dont tell them it is L28 motor out of another car, the inspector probably wont pick it up

Thanks Linton, thought that might happen.

Sounds like it might depend on who is there on the day at VicRoads.

Thanks Dat240z, are you in Victoria or interstate?

Im in the home of the 240z in Australia - the nations capital.

It was a number of years ago for me but I had no issues.

Presented paperwork inside, two people came out and confirmed number on engine matched paperwork. Job done.

Perhaps things have changed more recently.

nah our local small town vicroads guy thinks he is god...when it comes to the rules you are allowed to have a 20% gain in horsepower and when I said that the 28 is not 20% increase on a l26 he cracked the shits and told me it was illegal and wasnt produced with the L28 so engineer, load of crap I think.
