Original Engine Numbers

With a bit of chat on here about originality etc I thought I'd post this. I have an L26 engine that came with my 240Z. I doubt that I will ever have a need for it and while I hadn't planned on actively trying to sell it I was thinking that perhaps it might be the original engine from some ones car on here. The number is " L26 119086 " . If that is the case I'd be happy to part with it. Please note that this is the bare block only. I bought the car and parts from Melbourne.

I think this is interesting, does that mean as long as the block has the right stamp on it, it's an original engine and none of the ancillaries matter?

Or is a reshelled car the original still, like as has happened to so many race cars where the running gear is transferred over to a new shell and the original logbook is still used for that car....

I think a all matching number car is worth more to certain collectors with all things being equall

The argument most collectors make for "matching numbers" are that the engine, transmission and rear end are from the same era/model as the car and not necessarily the engine, trans and diff the car was delivered with.

 

ie. a 250 GTO Ferrari can be numbers matching as long as the engine is the correct tipo 168 V12. It could be from another 250 GTO but it will be considered numbers matching.

'Numbers matching' for the majority of enthusiasts surely means that the imprinted chassis & engine numbers match those on the engine bay data plate, & in the original paperwork.

In the case of American cars like the Mustangs there is also a metal data plate or sticker with matching VIN which provides codes for it's delivery district, date, body colour, interior, trans, & rear end. Some factories went further & fitted a body buck tag which provided codes to assist the assembly line workers to fit the correct spec parts as the vehicle proceeded down the line. All those are important to collectors wanting originality.

Yep that's it numbers gotta match tags. Some cars have stated on there tags interior colour auto or manual colour and engine size. my mate collects old falcons and he go for tags that have K code on the which means 351 so many 6 cylinder falcons fitted with v8s
