The Fairlady 240ZG sold for $47.500 USD. Cheap in my opinion.

The wrong car in the wrong place?

There are suggestions that the car isn't that good close-up, and was in a bit of a state before being 'refreshed' for sale in Japan. Even the auction sales blurb photos show up a list of faults as long as your arm.

The first USA-based "collector" vendor didn't hang on to it very long, and doesn't appear to have made any effort to improve/correct it. To enter such a car in a high profile auction with such illustrious cars around it probably wasn't the best plan.

Photos like this one give a clue to the real story:

Couldn't even be bothered to find the proper RHD top half to the bonnet catch mechanism? Poor show.

Excuse the dog noises and my talking, I didn't think it would be recording my voice.

I have to agree totally with comments to the price achieved and the auction selected. I had a good look at the photos the other day and found a few things that stood out about it even to my untrained eye.

Level of detail : Scratches from reinstalling the factory data plate on both the paint and the data plate (poor) after paint refresh. I did not know the sales history and the movement of this Fairlady 240ZG.  I did note a half cage visible as well. Not what you might expect at that  auction.

I was very impressed with the data plate in the Fairlady 240ZG as it was the first one I had seen so clearly. It was so good to see the HS30 prefix on another factory data plate.

Cheers

Steve

I don't think it had a half cage? From the photos I saw, it was fitted with a slightly out-of-place modern rear strut-tower bar. Which would have been easy to remove, and would have made the interior of the car a whole lot more suited to that auction.

It's certainly a good lesson in what not to do in order to achieve top price.

Photos I've saved here from previous auction.

Previous auction here: https://www.classicdriver.com/en/car/nissan/240z/1972/386360

Looking at the photos, it certainly looks like the floors have been patched up, but the rail on the passenger side has rust holes in it.

I'd say this car would be an interesting car to strip back to find the nature of previous work / repairs carried out.

The sale price was around $60k AUD, which is certainly high end of our market for sales here for regular garden variety HS30's. So it's not cheap, but then again not too expensive for an HS30-H, but I think the car could easily cost you a fortune to restore properly and buying a good HS30-H that's been properly restored would probably be a better investment long term.

I'm also not a fan of the wheel sizes and fitment on it.

I think with that seller it probably didn't meet reserve. kp47works is known for having rare and expensive Nissan parts etc.. but also charging an absolute Premium for them and feedback I've heard is that may not be the most reputable individual. So don't expect to pick up a GTR for a bargain price.
