Intro was well overdue. I've been loitering in the forums, enjoying all the great build threads and the cars in the sale section.

I've posted a few things on other car sites and the feedback is not always positive. In contrast to here, you really feel welcomed (even without an intro).

My dream cars has always been 911's, but i decided that instead of waiting till i retired that I'd look for a cheaper car. Life is short, and I'd like to have some hair left before i got a nice car.

Unfortunately for me, I may have waited too long considering the upward trend of Z's prices these days. Just like house prices.

I was partly waiting because i wanted to drive an older car, to confirm if I would enjoy it. Following a members advice i did a drive day with a mate at fun2drive in japan. We drove a Hakosuka (triple solex l20), r34 & r35 on some amazing roads - I'll post some photos later. I couldn't drive the 240ZG as you need to have driven 3 cars before you get to drive it. I am looking forward to my next trip back.

I was definitely liked it. The sound of the Hakosuka was amazing. Even though it wasn't very powerfull the sound and the vibrations made it feel much faster than it was. It was an awesome experience.

I thought that the r34/35 just had too much power and that I'd just get myself in trouble. While in Japan, a family friend told us that his 1st car was a Hakosuka. I was thinking BARN FIND!

Unfortunately he was constantly getting into trouble with the police, so one day his parents scrapped the car without him knowing. Tragic waste.

Of late I have been looking at 944's, Celica's r22/28's and Beetles, mainly for budget reasons. 944's the electronics worry me, Celica's are also in low numbers and Beetles are just easy to fix in theory but not much power.

To add to the complications, I don't have a garage, not many tools, experience and a fairly young family. Most troubling is the misses, who has basically said "fine, get something just stop nagging me about it" - mission accomplished, sort off.

My son is constantly asking me what type of cars are that he see's and if that car is a datsun? - cute but slightly worrying.

A 260Z 2+2 broke down at the end of my street (not a member here i asked) and I had the kids with me so that may have planted that seed. I was partly hoping that the guy wanted to get rid off it, but he didn't.

I might stop rambling now, but if anyone in Ryde (NSW) area needs a hand, I'd be happy to help out.

Cheers

John

Good intro!

You should be able to pick yourself up a family car, ie a 260Z 2+2, at a readonable price, get too concerned about the mechanicals, it's the body shell and panels that need to be in good cond!

Being a four seater, your whole family can enjoy Sunday drives, etc, the inverted commas quote from your missus says one thing,,,,,l but it means totally something else!

Maybe later on, go after a 2seater?

Dear John

I am sorry to have to tell you but our relationship is over. I have come to the realisation that you simply don't understand me,

I am not someone to be left out in the cold. I demand constant attention and need a man with experienced to run his delicate hands over me on a constant basis. I need someone who has money to buy me all the things I desire. I need someone who focuses all his attention on me - I've seen your sideways glances at those Frauleins.

You have a wife and family and I am not prepared to come between you and them. I might be seen as a 'fast' woman but I have my moral standards. Forget about me.

regards

S30

Sounds like you need you first Zed now to be a bit more practical and as you age and get a bigger garage you can get your second Zed.....

A 2+2 that someone has already done most of the work on that is not in pristine condition sounds like your car, maybe even a 280ZX....the young ones fit well in the back of them.

They do need to be kept under cover, mine had spent some time outside for a couple of years before I got it and it did it no favours.

Nice intro. Welcome John.

I totally agree, these cars might not be all that powerful but they make the right sounds and are very fun to drive just for the sake of driving. I hope you get to own your own piece of nostalgia soon. Some good advice from the old timers above, check out the 2+2 so that the whole family can enjoy it and whatever you do, keep your delicate hands off of Peter.

By the way, looks like some of the Sydney guys will be meeting up on Sun 18 Aug at either Parramatta or Liverpool. You should try to make it if you can.

Thanks guys, though I wasn't expecting to get dumped by a car that I've yet to see or own. She's a cruel mistress.

George, Happy to come down on the 16th, I'll keep checking the event page. I did come down to a car show last year - Lions Club Gannons Park, not sure if any of you attended.

As for the advice, I was more worried about the engine, but I understand what is being said about the body work. Either way I won't be looking to buy a basket case, it might turn into one but as suggested in time i might have more space etc.

I have been thinking about 280zx. Much like the 2+2's the color does play a part in how it looks, either way once your driving it shouldn't matter. I'll have to take a look and see what they are like.

As for shelter/garage, I thought about putting up some temporary shelter and using a good car cover for it. It won't be in the street.

Added some photos from the fun2drive - thanks again.

Welcome,

Yep definetely aim for  a 260z 2+2, but in a light colour, imho dark colours dont seem to suit the 2+2s.., or go see the bank and buy an 83-911 and be done with it. 8)

Gidday & Welcome.

Nice to have another forum member on the northside.

Good luck looking for a car that fits your needs. 2+2's come up for sale fairly often.

Just make sure you check them over well, there is plenty of rough cars around.

Cheers

Good to meet you and Hanna(h?) yesterday. Hopefully seeing some more Z's up close has convinced you to pursue your dream and hey, if you end up with a 911 no one will pity you. ;)

Thanks George, it was nice to meet you and the rest of the folks. I think seeing some Z's in the flesh again has put me on the right path, just getting tired of constantly refreshing gumtree and expecting to find the one.

I told the misses (1st mistake) that i was thinking of getting a 280zx and then eventually moving the bit across to a shell. Have to stop sharing, anyway she looked in pain and passed on many words of encouragement - good times!

A word to the wise, stop waiting for the cars to come to you and go to them. Some of the best deals change hands before even reaching the Internet. It's all about who you know...

Mate, just get a Z, you will not look back.

I personally think that 2+2 Zs are not appreciated enough. If there were no 2 seat option the the 2+2 would cost a fortune. They have a beautiful shape.

Zs are not hard to work on, I had little mechanical knowledge when I started. The hardest part for me is finding the parts for the right price. All is awaylable on the net.

2+2 parts are plentiful.

Get one of those, not the zx.

I have a two seater 260z that I am restoring but I also have 2x2+2 as I just like them, they need a lot of work but one 2+2 is running complete car and the other one is just a mint shell.

Work out your budge for a good second hand one and add $5,000.0 for the repairs and you will have your self a really nice Z.

Just couple of weeks ago a silver 260z two seat sold for $8500 on pretty good condition. That was a good buy.

Also you will find that 260z two sweaters are usually in better condition than 240z.

But 240z is the holy grail.

I known of couple for $6,000.0 each but they need at least $10,000 (if you pay a reasonable shop to do the work) each to restore the bodies and make them road worthy.

Well after a quick to trip to WA I've bought a 206z 2+2. Its in pretty good nick, the bad are rust bubble in the fuel area, surface rust in the spare tire well and drivers foot well. Will need most rubber component changed and fluids changed etc.

Fairly chuffed, misses is still dealing with it, hopefully when she see's it she'll understand it was a good buy. Now to organise transport.

Congratulations! Travelling to WA was a mighty effort indeed.

I discovered today that the new forum software allows members to change their user names. Under the circumstances, perhaps you should consider altering yours from 'Impatient1' to 'Dedicated1'?  :D

Stupid1 may be more accurate, based on feedback at home. Admittedly I haven't handled the situation very well with other half, but she is a pretty special and ultimate forgiving (hopefully)lady.

Bittersweet at the moment.

Oh yeah it's also an auto... At the moment.

That is a not a hard thing to fix, in the middle of doing that to mine right now.

There is a good sticky thread about how to do it covers most of the job pretty well.

I have seen that awesome thread. The car comes with a manual transmission and other bits. It wont be a priority for the moment, but it has to leave WA first. Fun times.

Have you found a suitable freight company ?

Posted

After one false start with the transport company to pick it up and no communication for the entire trip (1 week).

She's finally arrived, a bit dirty but all in one piece. No regrets at all with the 2+2, still looks great.

I had to call them every second day to see what was happening. It was meant to arrive on Friday but was pushed back till today. Was slightly annoying but it was for the best as it gave me extra time to fix up the shed etc. Plenty of spares came with it, in different states of disrepair. I did have one moment of glee, as it came with a gear stick for the manual transmission. Once she's clean I'll take a few more photos.

happy days.

John
