Agno Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 Hey all, I want to revert my car back to standard and therefore I'm after a set of rear drum brakes and all hardware suitable for a pre '75 240/260Z. I have an R31 rear disc conversion with good calipers, near new pads and machined discs (less than 200km on them) to offer as a potential swap for anyone looking to do the rear disc brake conversion otherwise I'm happy to buy. Thanks Quote
gilltech Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 On that topic, does anyone make our Z finned-style rear drums? The only ones I see on eBay are Protex? IIRC, & they just look a generic type without the fins. In order to keep originality, I suppose when our drums have worn too thin to be re-machined there might be someone around who can re-line them? Agno Posted January 6, 2015 Author Posted January 6, 2015 Funny you ask, I saw these links earlier today: http://www.datsunparts.com/2550 http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/24-5051 Quote
gilltech Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 Well spotted, haven't come across those before. Haven't ever seen the aluminium ones, limited run too, cheaper to post..... Quote
benny Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 ive got a pair of 240z finned drums if you or any needs them. PM me Quote
phillay Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 I think I am going to pass on this one, I am kinda sick of taking my car off the road and stuff lol... Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted January 6, 2015 Administrators Posted January 6, 2015 Apparently Brembo do a pair also. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Datsun-240Z-260Z-280Z-Brembo-Aluminum-Rear-Brake-Drums-NIB-Perfect-/201235416535 A little expensive though... Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted January 6, 2015 Administrators Posted January 6, 2015 A couple of other options. Rear Drum Hardware http://www.ebay.com/itm/Datsun-240Z-260Z-280Z-1970-75-Drum-Brake-Springs-Hardware-Kit-Rear-New-/321622482110 Rear Drums http://www.ebay.com/itm/Datsun-240Z-260Z-280Z-1970-78-2-Rear-Brakes-Brake-Drum-NEW-Pair-Drums-/321629379730 Wheel Cylinders http://www.ebay.com/itm/Datsun-240Z-260Z-280Z-1970-76-Brake-Wheel-Cylinder-Rear-Left-NEW-/221648994588 I don't think these parts are specifically OEM originals. I'm not sure what quality is like compared with the original Tokico stuff? Quote
KatoKid Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 Agno. Just checked my rear brakes ...alloy drums in excellent condition, new shoes and what looks like new wheel cylinders. Can media blast if desired. Let me know if youre still keen. Quote
peter t Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 If you are not racing I really can't see the point of rear disc as a lot of new cars still have drums standard on the rear. Quote

Very true, the technical guys at work tell me that 80+ % of your stopping power comes from the wheels (unless you are going backwards ) and drums are more than adequate for most uses and that is why new cars continue with them. Because they look cool My Suzuki Jimny is a 2009 model, still has rear drums. Not even finned! Quote
peter t Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 I got a set of R31 calipers and mounts if anyone wants them. Quote
Agno Posted February 8, 2015 Author Posted February 8, 2015 Successfully swapped with KatoKid. Thanks Dave! I had a think and decided if I'm going to go to all this effort to swap everything out (including removing the stub axles) it's probably worth my time to find some later model drums as they are supposedly better. If anyone has some 77-78 rear drum assemblies shoot me a PM. Thanks Quote
Agno Posted February 10, 2015 Author Posted February 10, 2015 BUMP. Z shop are asking $150 a side so if anyone can do better I'm all ears Quote
Riceburner Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 What is the advantage of the later model setup? Quote
Agno Posted February 11, 2015 Author Posted February 11, 2015 The 77-78 drum brakes use a dual piston wheel cylinder design instead of a single piston with ratchet like the early drums. This means more even pressure and wear on the shoes. While I'm sure the difference would be marginal I figured the old do it once and properly mantra should apply. Quote
