Jason89 Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 Ill start from the start without making too much of a story out it. 4 years ago I bought myself an early 240z as a project, plans were to modify it and make it into a street car i could enjoy, tinker, and participate in the odd track day. It wasn't in good shape and once i got into it, I knew it was going to be a very time consuming process. As i got to appreciate the early zeds for their quirky differences i realized this car should be restored back to original, so the project took a turn. Thats a story for another build thread later. I still wanted a 240z that i could drive, modify and enjoy. This car came up for sale here in SA, i contacted the owner and organised to go and take a look. It was an unfinished project but came with all the parts and spares to complete. The owner had driven the car before pulling it down to start the restoration. At first sight i started to question myself, do i really need another project, as i had a good look over the chassis it was in reasonable shape, the floor pans had been replaced, lhr gaurd, roof skin, it didnt look like alot of work. I didnt make and offer on it, but slept on it, and told him id take it the next day. I picked it up a couple of weeks later and got straight to work. Quote

Jason89 Posted January 3, 2015 Author Posted January 3, 2015 I got straight into finishing the rust repair on the body, there were a few small sections left to do, where the roof meets the rear quarters and a couple of bits in the firewall. The doors needed a few rust repairs. I had to make the decision of whether or not to cut the guards for zg flares. I already had two front guards cut for flares, i could use those. The lhr quarter had been replaced and hadn't been welded into the tub very nicely so i made the decision to make the chop. The rust repairs were completed, everything was etched primed, bogged, primed and rubbed down over and over, until i was happy with it. This took every spare minute of my time for 4 months. Quote

Jason89 Posted January 3, 2015 Author Posted January 3, 2015 It was just about time for paint, was up until midnight rubbing it down again, cleaning up the shed, getting ready for an early start. I was out in the shed and 6am, the weather was forecast for over 40 so i didn't want to be out there in the heat of the day. I painted the car all separate to minimize overspray and break it down into bite size pieces. I started with the body, pushed it out, then brought in a couple of panels at a time. This was the first complete car ive painted in 2k and I'm very happy with how it came out. Heres the pics. I was done by midday and the temp in the shed was getting up around 50 degrees (my shed has a really low roof and heats up like a shipping container). The tech data sheet for the paint said to bake at 60 degrees for 2 hours, it would of been close mid afternoon. Quote

Jason89 Posted January 24, 2015 Author Posted January 24, 2015 Thanks lads. After i fitted up the fuel lines, brake lines and tank i got stuck into the suspension. I sectioned the struts and fitted threaded sleeves, still using the original rubber upper mounts. Replaced ball joints, tie rod ends, bushes,brake master, rebuilt brake calipers with new pistons, pads, brake hoses, wheel bearings, basically anything that looked flogged out got replaced. I then went on the fitting up the door frames, glass, latches and strikers, had a bit of trouble getting the glass alignment right, but its all working pretty well now after many hours messing around. My old man came around this morning and gave me a hand to bleed the brakes, we bolted the wheels on and pushed it outside so i could give the shed a clean up (after staring at it for an hour). Next step I'm going to have a look at the engine, see if i can clean it up a bit. At this stage ill be running a stock l24 with extractors and 2.5 inch exhaust. Ill let the pics tell the story. Quote

As Vaughn said previously, we will try to find some time soon to come out and see it in the flesh. I am really happy for you, I know it has been a long time in the making and a lot of hard work, now you are nearly there. Have you thought about blending the white flares a little more like they are in this photo? I like the clean look. Cheers Jeff Quote

Jason89 Posted February 18, 2015 Author Posted February 18, 2015 Time for an update I dragged the dusty old L24 out from the corner of the shed and gave it a bit of a check over and clean up. I started by stripping it down to just the bottom end, then cleaned and painted the block. I took the head to work where i machined it, didnt have to take much off i just wanted it nice and clean for a good headgasket seal. The rocker cover, inlet manifold and extractors were all sandblasted and the extractors got a coat of high temp paint. Not sure how well the high temp paint will hold up but they were defiantly prepped well. I fitted the long engine with gearbox to the car before fitting up the manifolds. Quote

It all went back together without too many issues, and although there is a few things i still want/need to do its awsome to be able to drive it. The things to do list include, -Seat trim -Cut and polish paint -Seat belts -Electronic ignition -Sort wheel alignment Heres a pic taken on the weekend at All Jap Day. Quote
