mossy Posted October 28, 2014 Author Posted October 28, 2014 I've done a few hours searching the net last night and it seems there very hard to come by. I've seen the ebay one Gav and it looks like a b projects cap on top with the red R but the wood knob itself seems different, it doesn't have the swirl grain the genuine ones have. The b project ones looks good but seeing as you can can get the 4 speed knob still for about $140 your paying a fair premium just for the cap. Might end up getting a new 4 speed one if I cant find a 5 speed for a decent price, as good as they look I cant see myself paying around $300 for a gear knob.....then again I did pay $600 for a steering wheel Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted October 28, 2014 Administrators Posted October 28, 2014 Yes they are very hard to come by, even the 4 speed OEM knobs are difficult to find now. If you do find a 5 speed knob the button is usually cracked from years of wear and the chrome peeling off. Nissan's reproductions (of the 4 speed knob) are slightly different to the original in that they are a thicker width and don't quite look the same. it doesn't have the swirl grain the genuine ones have. I wouldn't worry too much about the woodgrain as it seems Nissan own OEM knobs had quite a few differences in them anyway. Here is OEM 5 speed knob I got from the UK. and the bluebird (510) 4 speed knob(which I swapped for a 5 speed) I got from Japan. Although I did stain it (like I did in the steering wheel resto thread), it was darker to begin with anyway...so even Nissan had variations over the years and the woodgrain was less obvious in the lighter coloured version. Might end up getting a new 4 speed one if I cant find a 5 speed for a decent price. Wait until a good 4 speed knob appears on eBay US with good chrome and wood portion. Don't worry if the button is cracked. as good as they look I cant see myself paying around $300 for a gear knob.....then again I did pay $600 for a steering wheel That Yahoo! Auctions knob has been there forever - I think everyone feels it's over-priced. I did see an OEM in the box 5 speed knob sell for about $200+ AU on Yahoo! Auctions a while ago, but they are very hard to find now and in hindsight I feel it was a good price. I've paid silly prices for some stuff, I just recently got 2 Rally Clocks (2 button w/oscillator boxes etc..) I don't even know if they work properly yet. I'm going to get them refurbished by Ron at Zclocks.com and that ain't cheap! As much as I'd like to keep both I think I'll have to sell 1 of them. But sometimes you gotta pay a Premium for a part you really want or someone else will . You can find Hakosuka gear knobs on Yahoo! Auctions and they are a bit skinnier and look period correct etc.. if you look at the works rally cars they had a similar style of wooden knob in some of them. I was going to get 1 of those, but really wanted the OEM piece. OEM disease I call it. I'll PM you. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted October 28, 2014 Administrators Posted October 28, 2014 Skyline gear knob (fitted to a C110 I think?). See also: http://retrorides.proboards.com/thread/100083#.VFAOoouUd7Q Similar looking gear knob. Note: You can just see the 2 knob rally clock also! That's why I had to have 1 Now for finding those seats! haha. Quote
thriller Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 ^ I think the Works style rally knob is a nice substitute if you're not going for factory original. I found a nice reproduction for about $90 from YAJ a while ago. Color isn't 100% right so it'll need a darker varnish applied, but I think it's a nice touch. Quote
chris240 Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 Pics of my spare 1973 knob...its missing the chrome trim and selector cap, but the woodgrain has the beautiful swirl burl through it.. The black spots are actually in the wood, kinda looks like iron bark ! Very nice patina on it, pics dont do it justice. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted October 29, 2014 Administrators Posted October 29, 2014 FYI: Found this on Yahoo! Auctions. http://page11.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/n132573245#enlargeimg Looks like shift button has a crack in it, even though it's supposedly NOS (probably the box is just for decoration), but you can see how the wood varies. chris240 Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 Holly crap, if you scroll to the bottom it shows the results of another that sold for 39500 yen which is $405au ! Am I reading it right Gav ? Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted October 29, 2014 Administrators Posted October 29, 2014 I assume you mean this 1? http://page13.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/r103578704 But it hasn't sold, it's still live and 0 bids. It's at a buy it now price practically. It's been there for a couple of months. Quote
mossy Posted October 29, 2014 Author Posted October 29, 2014 That yahoo one Gav probably wont sell, as you said its been there for a few months. I remember seeing a set of watanabes on yahoo for crazy money and it basically sat at the same price for well over a year...could even still be there now. It does look like the newer 4 speed ones are a lighter shade, definetely looks better a darker shade though. Looks like I have 1 lined up too, just waiting to hear back. Quote
chris240 Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 Mossy, let me know if the sale falls thru, you can have my spare for a smallish amount. Quote
mossy Posted October 31, 2014 Author Posted October 31, 2014 No worries Chris, I'll let you know. Quote
Herbonius Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 Can I ask what you found? I'm looking for a 5 speed gear knob myself so I'm curious as to what you came up with. Dan. Quote

Administrators gav240z Posted November 13, 2014 Administrators Posted November 13, 2014 Hey Mossy, I was in two minds of selling mine. If u don't mind, were did u end up buying the repro top cap? A member on here made some reproductions. I don't want to disclose the member name as he will likely get inundated with requests. It's best he contacts you . FWIW I was looking at making the replica's myself. There might be a local makers class or something where they would know how to go about this. A colleague of mine in the office here put me onto this website that a friend of his runs. http://robodino.org/ http://robodino.org/define-makerspace We're a makerspace in Sydney: a communal space where geeks and artists brainstorm ideas, play games, work on collaborative projects, and share the cost of some great tools. FYI: This 5 speed knob with damage to the button went for $200 + http://page13.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/r120671563 Quote
Herbonius Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 If the member making reproductions is looking for more business, he has a guaranteed paid-upfront buyer here if he would like one. Quote

PeterAllen Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 George - I was rummaging through stuff in the shed looking for exhaust straps when I found this. It's a bit rough but you can have it if you want it. Quote
George Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 Cheers Pete. Challenge accepted. P.S. I've been working out in preparation for the body lift for the engine install but still no call...? Quote
