Haha. Hazards of the hobby.

I also like the look of the hubcaps, what about some re-barrelled steelies. 14x8's Nice OEM look with plenty of grip

Think I've seen Mustangs done like that, I like the idea. Not sure how expensive it would be? But deep dish wheels with hub caps could look cool ;).

Thank you Alan as always full of interesting information. None of my Zeds have ever had working hazards and my 73 didn't even have a switch. I noticed also my 73 and this 70 both have the original rear glass which didn't have the defrosting elements in it like the US cars. So I'm not sure if the AU market cars had the hazard switches standard?

Maybe you could cross-reference details on your car with some of the other Aus/NZ guys with 'early' cars and come up with some data that can be used as reference for the future? Maybe make a sticky / reference page? It's always a pain seeing everyone default to the North American market data just because that is the most plentiful in the books and mags and on the 'net. Shame really, as Nissan took the Aus/NZ markets seriously enough to make special models for them. We should try to understand, document and record them properly.

I can easily imagine that a standard Heated Rear Window was not strictly necessary in Aus/NZ market cars. Local laws might not have insisted on a Hazard Flasher system being stock equipment too(?). And I guess it could easily be possible that the original headlamp units were Lucas items if the Japanese and North American market units / systems ( no 'side light' lamp inside the headlamp unit ) did not comply with Aus/NZ laws. Your seatbelts don't look like factory items to me ( Australian aftermarket? ) so I wonder whether the first OEM units complied with Aus/NZ laws too? Nissan soon changed them in other markets as well.

I remember the US spec cars had a big lever type switch for the hazards and the one that I think is original 240 Aus spec switch was a pull for on, push in for off type. Many years ago since I saw one of those switches.

Gav, you didn't get the original black and white plates with it? Would've been great to keep them on but in NSW thats impossible. I think the hardest part would be the firewall.... isn't there like 3 layers of steel that meet at that point?

I was going to turf these but then I thought hmmm maybe I should keep them? Install them again when it's finished or something?

Maybe put new speakers in them like Kev did with his Hakosuka http://japanesenostalgiccar.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1600&start=700

Although, these types of speakers are more suited to cars with rear shelves to put them on.

If I can find out what the original rego number was then I'm pretty sure I could order a custom plate in NSW in the old style black. Do you think the original rego was ENR 466? Seems like the correct number for 1970. My other 240z was LCU 540 which seems correct for the year.

Yeah I totally agree, much of the info is focused on the US / North American market based cars. I want to do some restructuring of the website in general to make more of this information article based - as opposed to forum discussion based. Which is useful when using sticky posts etc.. but also has it's drawbacks in terms of site structure and if you have 100 sticky posts it sort of misses the point of a sticky.

With regard to the headlights yes I've seen the Lucas items on our cars before, I suspect they were original but I'll look into it further.

The seats belts in my 73 were also a lap belt design but had a different buckle set up. I suspect local seat belt companies to the state / area probably were contracted or commissioned to provide 'Australian standard' seat belts. Hence why the earlier belts were different from the later style lap belts. I tried to look up the company based on the name, I'd say they are long since out of commission though...

The others I had said "Datsun' on the belt buckle. My 72 still has a lap belt on the passenger side, but the drivers side has been changed to a more modern design. I would often find that the belts would unhook themselves if you didn't have them on tight enough. Not really safe, so perhaps best used for shows and display as opposed to used in a practical sense. I am considering fitting a 'period' looking roll cage to the car, so might have a harness set up for safety reasons really..

Here is another detail I missed at first but found the other day.

IMG_20131221_155900.jpg

Note: The ignition switch position called 'Garage', I am pretty sure my 72 doesn't have this. Can others confirm? What is garage meant to do/be?

I always found it strange that Nissan had exposued wires showing under the dash in these cars. However I've since realised that many cars must have had these covers removed.

IMG_20131221_155912.jpg

This is in the drivers footwell, the brown marks everywhere in the car and on the dash are dirt it appears that rubs off. I haven't bothered to clean the interior yet, there are bigger fish to fry lol..

Having a further look around the car I suspect it was repainted again at some stage in it's life to the factory colour, I see evidence of overspray on some rubber seals and the bogged up doors and lower guard also tend to confirm this. The engine bay however and interior don't seem to have had the same repaint so perhaps it was a quick 'rust removal or cover up' and re-coat?

This is probably when the guards were changed to 260z style ones also and perhaps the Ford mirror was fitted to the door around this time too.

Yeah I might give them to a suitable charity or someone who might want them for similar. Unfortunately the rear 1/4 trims were cut to fit aftermarket speakers. So I'll need to source those at some stage, but it's not a huge deal.

Gavin, the ENR plates are from the mid-late eighties. The black and white L's are from the early seventies.

What years did the early D hubcaps run to Lurch and when did the later style ones come in? Is it relatively easy to restore a set or is there anything you need to be aware of - ie broken clips or similar?

I assume the ones I posted suit later model z cars?

Cheers

My 73 model 240z had those later style ones.

Gav, if you don't mind I'd have them for a site donation. I'm planning to get another 70's or 80's runaround.

I haven't been visiting the site as much as I would like these days but has there been a Sydney meet lately?

cheers, Mike.

What car are you looking for Mike?

No Sydney meet lately. Should do something in the new year though. I'll rock up in my Fiesta.
