Lurch. Believe or not the shifter on all BMW's are remote body mounted so you can position it where ever you want. S50B32 is pretty highly strung unit. BMW went all out to make 100 HP per litre for a production car and they have their issues but as long as you know what to look for you can make them pretty safe. The engine for the McLaren F1 is essentially two of these put together to make a V12.

Had a big night in the shed last night, didn't finish until 1:00 but very pleased with how things went. Wanted to give you all a glimpse of what Ive been working on in the background for nearly a year now, I haven't posted anything about this previously as Ive had some trials and tribulations along the way and at times even doubted I would get to this stage.....and there is still a long way to go before I could say I'm happy. Will post heaps of detail on how I got to here in the next week or so but basic details are: S50B32 engine from a 1998 E36 M3, Ive got the matching Getrag 6 speed but have installed for now with the ZF 5 speed from the earlier 1995 E36 M3. I'm going to run the factory ECU and have the matching EWS, harness and keys to make the anti theft system work. Ive been working in the back ground with Ron Tyler of RT diff mount fame, Ron is putting the US spec S52 engine in his car http://forums.hybridz.org/index.php/topic/79806-rt260-bmw-m-powered/ While the basic block is similar the engines are actually very different. The US engine is designated S52B32US and is derived form the production M52 engine with single Vanos, lower compression ratio, hydraulic lifters, single throttle body and is rated at 240 HP compared to the the S50B32 (also referred to as the S50B32 Euro) which has 6 throttle bodies, constantly variable dual Vanos, Siemens ECU, solid cams, 11.3:1 compression ratio and is rated at 321 HP and is one of first production engines to make 100 HP per litre. Until last night I was making lots of assumptions based on Ron's swap about how the S50B32 would fit, turns out the difference in engines will cause some issues but nothing that cant be dealt with. Ron was kind enough to provide me with a set of his engine block mounts as the blocks are essentially the same and using E30 325 rubber mounts it pretty much bolted in...after I removed the bonnet latch bracket. Trans crossmember is nearly a bolt in too and the best news is that the trick factory stainless exhaust headers look like they will fit with the slightest massaging. Biggest unknown is the drive line alignment, Ive got good clearance to my Subaru rack but the BMW runs a guibo joint on the output of the trans and this must be perfectly in line with the diff or else they self destruct. Lots to do and I will post as I make more progress. Cheers.

The Brown Hornet - as NEW 1971 240Z - SOLD
KatoKid replied to acf321's topic in Members Project(s) Journal
Its funny (not really) you know, when you don't hear from a regular forum member for some time, especially after Kyle I was thinking of others and realised I hadn't heard from Adam and a few others as well for that matter. Good to hear from you Adam and looking forward to the final unveiling.....when it happens and in your own time! David. -
Installed my resplined shaft between the column and the rack and it all works! As expected the shaft runs very close to the chassis rail and while you could "massage" the rail for more clerance Im going to move the base of the column by sloting the mounting holes on the plate that bolts it to the firewall. This is an old trick from the time whan I put an SBC in my LJ Torana and provides the necessary clearnce without the steering wheel relocation being really noticeable.

Good thread! Ive been into dirt bikes for yonks and most of the guys I ride with choose to ride Honda's and Yamaha's, Im a dead set fan of KTM's also know in the dirt bike world as Kato's and so they gave me the name Katokid....Im far from a kid now but it makes me feel good!

Its $1,000 total, irrespective of number of items. Be carfeful with splitting deliveries as customs do keep track of imports and if they see split orders they will hit you. Try having the second order sent in another name to a mates address.

Ive used carefully regulated air pressure to repair header pipes and expansion chambers on motorcycles. Generally 20 - 40 PSI will get the job, done you need to apply cherry red heat to the dent area. Same should work for tanks but you could probably only need 10 or so PSI, be sure to fill the majority with water first and also purge all fumes before heating with a rose tip.

Thanks Mike. As usual you amaze me with the depth of info you come up with. S2000 looks pretty short and bore size will be the deciding factor (needs to match the BMW slave cylinder I'm using ...hint hint). Ive also looked at under dash options and there are many ways to skin the same cat. I should know for sure which way to go in the next week or so once I get the engine in final position. Thanks again. David.

Thanks Tim and Mike. Ive looked at Commodore MC before and apart from the need to mod the firewall they seem to be the shortest on the market at 70mm, only 9mm differenece but that may make all the difference. Cheers
-
Hey NZeder Mike. I too need a really short clutch MC. Its a bit hard to tell from the photo so would appreciayte if you could confirm the total distance the MC stands out from the firewall? Thanks. David

For the guys in Sydney they've quoted the 1 set $1055 cost shipped to Sydney as its the freight costs that determines the price...the more they can ship together the lower the cost. If you can get a 3rd part in Sydney you will be eligible for the 3 set price of $991 or it may pay to ship them all to Melbourne and then freight to Sydney. Same for garvice in Brissy. Let me know what you want to do. Tony in Bendigo, yours will have to be picked up or freighted from Melbourne. You cool with that? I'm going to order mine with no holes as well. Will still get them to supply rubbers in case I don't like the plain look.
-
garvice, theyve told me they now do 2+2 rear bars. Same price as the 2 seater bars as a set. Do you want front and rear now?
-
So looks like we have a fair bit of interest. The following people have either posted or sent PM's. All in Melbourne except those noted: mossy oldZman - Sydney Mooa42 - Bendigo roastbeef - Sydney V8Datto LC260Z handsandwich garvice - front only, no holes. Brissy katokid So we have enough to qualify for the lowest price but I need to ask about shipping to different locations as their price is based on one shipment only. The other catch is the declared value....they have stated that they are prepared to ship the bumpers with a low invoice price ($120 per set) so the shipment will be tax-free but this doesn't always work out as Ive just found out from experience....Ive just imported some parts from the UK and the supplier nominated a very low value but Customs cracked it and placed a much higher value on it which meant I had to pay a heap of duty and GST....and you cant dispute it. So there is a risk with undervaluing. David

ChrisZ. No stock in the UK at the moment, but can send a set of Datsun 240Z bumpers to Denmark for 832€ including DHL shipping and all tax and duties. David

Lost for words..... No doubt Kyle will have family and friends that are going to struggle to come to terms with this but I feel we as a group have also lost a family member. R.I.P Kyle. David. -

Deliveries will have to be individual to keep under the customs $1000 threshold. Anyone interested should let me know within the next week or so. Cheers. David Thank you very much for your email. Congrats Pete. Cant imagine how it must feel to get her responding. I guess consumation of the relationship will be the day you actually drive her!

I reckon go with the folded ones and fabricate the boxes...asssuming they are knackered.
-
Matt. I just replaced the sills on my 240 using full lentgh repro's from All Z Spares, they werent a great fit but with some effort they came out fine. These ones listed on evil bay dont have the closed in boxes at the front and rear by the looks of it and that's why they say they will fit all models, having said that I dont think anyone else does a complete sill for a 2+2 so you may be stuck with these folded alternatives as opposed to the full length pressings. May be a good thing anyway as these may fit better than the pressings. David

Looks good Jamo. I contemplated going this way but engineers get a bit funny when there is welding involved in steering components so decided modifying the crossmember is a going to attract less scrutiny at rego time. Is your rotary valve assembly alloy or steel? I know they have both and yours looks like alloy.
-
Photos jamo! Who did the welding on your ears?
-
You old b***ard! Make me laugh....me 49. But seriously the support act was rapper JZ and youre right the crowd was a real mix of generations and got off on JZ as much as U2.
