Asking price will be $350 as is or I can completing refurb for additional cost (new bearing kit and new synchros where required to bring total cost to approx $1100) PM me if you are interested (box located in Moorabbin Vic) cheers Alan
  3. Yes definitely, all are welcome, please be sure to introduce yourself to the committee and other members at the meeting point. cheers Alan
  4. Guys Following the appearance of the 370Z on your Thredbo trip, Nissan have contact us and wish to bring the 370z along on the NDSOC run to Apollo Bay this Sunday March 1st with a camera crew to film footage for the motor show. For those who wish to join in, please meet at the Shell Westgate at 6.30am Sunday 1st March for a social drive to Apollo bay and then on up to Lavers Hill. (bugger my Zed is still in the paint shop ) cheers Alan
  5. Rev Go and see Paul at Rankins Restorations in Malvern St Bayswater ...........Paul will be happy to help (tell him I sent you) 9729 0622, Rankins specialise in old stuff (Alfas mostly but they have done a few Zeds and Roadsters) so they know how to treat rust !! They have my Zed in the shop at the moment for an engine bay repaint and another 240 in for a total refurb . Alan
  6. The 50mm ram tubes have approx 50mm clearance at the front carb and taper to around 20mm, the increase in mid range power comes from the plenum chamber effect (all three carbs drawing from the same enclosure and the shape of the airbox (Prince engineers designed aircraft in WWII so they knew abit about airflow) HP was also assisted by the cold air drawn in from in front of the radiator through the 280Z airfilter housing, the air box provides better throttle response, with greater mid range torque and smoother power delivery without harming peak power. The carby holes in the backing plate of the airbox had to be re-aligned as the Prince Mikunis are staggered at an angle so some welding and filing was done to ensure a correct fit with no overlap or air gaps. The return fuel line was run via the original lines thru a restrictor installed in the back carby T piece (brass plug with 3mm hole) , fuel flow was measured to ensure sufficient fuel was delivered at sustained full throttle (using the standard fuel pump) . The fuel lines is tempoary at the moment as I'm making up a proper fuel rail by modifying the original with larger 8mm diameter metal tubing, this will make it all very neat and tidy . The car as at the panel shop getting an engine bay refresh, I'll post some pics of the end result in a few weeks when I get it all back together again for the road trip to QLD. cheers Alan
  7. Blocking off the crank case vent can cause blow back through the oil galleries and out through the rocker cover vent. The best and most elegant solution is to install an air box around the triples and vent the crank case and rocker cover into this airbox so any oil fumes are then burnt via the combustion process (This is the first thing that the EPA always check for if your car is ever inspected for emmsions). I have installed a cold air airbox (with 50mm ram tubes inside) from a Prince GTB Skyline which is fed via a 280Z (US version S30 with fual injected L28) air filter housing which is located in front of the radiator, the crank case and rocker cover vent are then plumbed into the airbox. This set up makes approx 10% more mid range power than straight ram tubes and has no loss of peak power (proven on the chassis dyno)....in all a very sanitary set up which looks "factory" and should appease any EPA inspector. cheers Alan
  8. I'm locked and loaded, heading up with my Zed and hopefully my Roadster track car, Morgan Park should be a blast !
  9. There was a black 260z I saw for sales around 10 years ago it a yard on the corner of Springvale and Dandenong Rd (the big spaghetti junction) . The 260 was fitted with a 265 hemi and the sticker price was $45000 !! Needless to say it sat there for months before the car yard went broke......not sure what happened to the car
  10. Daniel Lindsday Drife once told me the the L26 bores are too thin to bore to 86mm as they start to flex ......I also heard that from the Datrally guys many years ago Is there any truth in this.......
  11. Nothing ........the question was asked if 83mm flat tops are available? If you were to bore an L26 to 86mm you may as well save your $$ and built an L28....surely ??
  12. 83mm bore pistons can be found here also (Genuine Nissan stock are extremely rare) Not sure of the part number, I will have to check on the box of genuine Nissan pistonsI have in the garage http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Datsun-240Z-260Z-piston-ring-kit-pistons-new-NIB_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33623QQihZ022QQitemZ350155010240QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW
  13. Datsun Comp steering wheel BNIB !! Rare as rocking horse doodoo Buy Now at $695 USD ........ouch ! http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110337690024&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&viewitem=
  14. Micky G My engine was built by Lou Mondello in Moorabbin Ph 9555 9591 (around the corner from Datsota) Lou is a U series Roadster race engine specialist who also builds the odd L series (he also built my L24 Group Sc race engine in my old 240z) , he also works with the guys on the engine dyno with tuning (he is the guru with Mikunis) He now has a source for 83mm flat tops if you wish to retain your L26
  15. Mick The rebuild options are many and varied howver if you wish to retain your L26 then you may wish to follow the path I went down with my L26 rebuild. http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,2415.0.html Alan
  16. Glen The dyno I use does not have a computer printout function however the torque figures were calculated to be around 255 nm at 4200 (up from the "optimistic" stock figure 206 nm). Again not in the league of turbo morors but still quite respectable for an L26 I'm also going to experiment with a Cyclone vortex generator placed in the induction pipe between the front airfilter housing and the cold air box, I have heard mixed reports on these adding power and bettering fuel ecconomy so I thought I'd try it for myself on the dyno and see if it improves air flow and HP
  17. I think he subbies for the Power Play guys on the engine dyno and works in the "Datsota" workshop in Moorabbin building race/rally cars
  18. Hi Guys An update on the L26 engine refresh project Well the Triple 44 Mikunis are now finally fitted and tuned and the results were pretty much as expected but a little short of the 130 rw giggawatts hoped for. After installing the Mikunis and dynoing the car with just straight ram tubes we made around 123 rwkw at 6000 rpm but had a flat spot at around 4-5000. The next step was to install the Prince GTB cold air box and 280z (US spec) front filter housing and a retune.......bingo ....flat spot gone, 15 % gain in mid range torque and hp and no loss of top end hp. The power delivery is very linear with instant throttle response, pulls fifth gear at 60 kph and pulls away with stumbling....feels just like fuel injection......final figures were around 125 rwkw (165 rw hp) at 6000 (possible a little more at 6500 bit sustained hot dyno runs are not ideal) with great on road drivability. This is due to the 34mm chokes and 70/30 cam. Les Collins (ex Datrally) suggests that 140+ rwkw is achievable if I go to 37mm chokes and a 72/73 cam but this will be at the sacrifice of low down torque and will move the power futher up the rev range......think I'll stick with this setup to keep the car well mannered. Highway cruise needs just the slightest throttle pressure, lambda and CO readings are bang on the money right through the rev range so no horrible fumes and no difference in hwy fuel economy over the old 240 carbs .........all round a very pleasent drive with plenty of welly when required
  19. Try Black Dragon Auto.........not sure of the quality but may be worth a try http://www.blackdragonauto.com/
  20. Dimitri Tom Cantwell blew the shift fork in his Opt 1 box (Neil cartledges old 240 race car) and Lou Mondello recently had one custom made from a mob in the US for around $450.....a work of art . Parts are very scarce but if you have the $$$ to spend you can get stuff custom manufactured. Alan
  21. G'day Dale The final results will be in the Dec/Jan issue of the club mag as the Nov issue was printed prior to the colation of the results I won best early Zed (show n shine) Gavin Cox won best Roadster (white Sports 2000) Laurie Harris won best concourse (Prince Gloria) Also Mario Tinio came in second with his magnificient Orange Skyline. I can't remember who the other winnners were (brain fade ) but the results should be on the web site soon and in the next mag. Do to the usual lack of members willing to volunteer to get on the committee to run the club , I ended up back on as Secretary taking over from Greg Brown. We will be making a few changes to next years score sheets to include a race class and an age bonus to make it a little fairer for the older cars . A great day with lots of club interest (10 new members signing up) and a great variety of cars. Alan
  22. Guys this is BAIT ADVERTISING I just had an email back from the dealer Hi Alan - this car is an example of what we can buy at auction in Japan for you. Thru www.fatfrogimports.com.au we can give you access to live dealer only auctions right across Japan. The Z 3-2-1 would be expensive in to buy but a great investment We currently have an immaculate 1971 240Z in stock (Aussie delivered one owner) Warm regards Philip Lee 0416 285 333 02 9744 0539
  23. All notable engine builders will advise that it is always best practice to go with brand new pistons rather than reuse old stock, L series piston always go oval with wear ....(i.e the skirt diameter will be less than the crown ) and the ring glands can wear so for a few hundred dollars it is cheap insurance to use fresh pistons.
  24. Thanks for the invite Lurch I would be great to see so many Zeds in one place (I think the best was around 50 odd at an NDSOC Concours back in Zed hayday of 1988) so I will try and get along if I can get out of lunch with the outlaws, . Craig:- I had no intention of airing any NDSOC "dirty laundry" on this site so I think we just agree to disgree and leave the past to the past BTW there are a number of NDSOC members who are also members of forum (Dimitri, Daniel, Sulio, Dale, Simon, Matty, john etc )..........I don't mind coping flack if I am the direct cause of the problem however it does get a little tiresome when I cannot influence NDSOC policy or change the past As far as encouraging members here to join in with NDSOC events I believe I have extended invites on numerous occasions including the annual display, drive days, navigation rallies etc (often to be flamed for doing so)..........so again putting myself at risk of being flamed again , this Sunday we have our annual Display at Southbank again so all are welcome .......the more Zeds the better over and out Alan
  25. Guys I think we are all getting a little "tense" over nothing, as with all clubs ......you get out what you put in..........if the NDSOC is not for you then that is fine. As far as I'm aware the NDSOC has no malice towards Vic Z or any of it's members (I for one was happy to support affiliation if that's the direction Vic Z wanted to go in) however as with any club, you need to be a financial member to enjoy the benifits and participate in club activities so blanket invites to join in on NDSOC events are unlikely. As far as gobbling up any one.....that is just plain rediculous, the Prince Skyline register has been affiliated with the NDSOC for over ten years and still operates as a totally seperate entity, as does the Roadster club. It is the Zed club of QLD who is hosting the 2009 Nationals and they have sent blanket invites out to all registered Datsun Clubs Australia wide (from the AOMC club list) as the internet Z club is not registered as such the QLD Zed club may not know of its existance or strength........so it may be prudent for someone from Vic Z to approach them to volunteer assistance with promotion etc The organiser's email is below greg alderding <gregandmaddie@hotmail.com>
